A Stopped Clock Asks Two Good Questions — Will Trump Resign? Will Democrats Impeach Him?

>

Trump Impeached; Pence Pleased (source)

by Gaius Publius

In a piece called "Do Democrats Want an Impeachment Fight?" Pat Buchanan asks two key questions for people not focused on the story behind the story, the story of which the story we're watching is just a part. Those question are:
  • Will Trump resign?
  • Will House Democrats impeach him?
Yes, I know this is Pat Buchanan we're going to quote, or "Pat F-ing Buchanan" to use the name he's known by on the left. Still, he's been doing some decent work lately — like a stopped clock that's still managed to be right more than twice a day.

(In the era of Trump, does time circle back on itself? That's probably more true than not. We do seem to be caught in a Groundhog Day loop of real problems like climate, Trump tweets about lawyers, and dollar-driven media focus on just the tweets.)

Here's Buchanan on each of these questions. I think his analysis is pretty spot on (with one proviso, which I'll offer at the end). First, part of Buchanan's intro (my emphasis throughout):
Would a Democratic House, assuming we get one, really impeach a president for paying hush money to old girlfriends?

Hence the high-fives among never-Trumpers are premature.

But if Cohen’s guilty plea and Tuesday’s conviction of campaign manager Paul Manafort do not imperil Trump today, what they portend is ominous. For Cohen handled Trump’s dealings for more than a decade and has pledged full cooperation with prosecutors from both the Southern District of New York and the Robert Mueller investigation.

Nothing that comes of this collaboration will be helpful to Trump.
Keep in mind Mueller's ability to keep Cohen, Manafort and many others "singing" as you read on. Now our two questions.

Will Trump resign? Buchanan on that:
Trump is not going to resign. To do so would open him up to grand jury subpoenas, federal charges and civil suits for the rest of his life. To resign would be to give up his sword and shield, and all of his immunity. He would be crazy to leave himself naked to his enemies.

No, given his belief that he is under attack by people who hate him and believe he is an illegitimate president, and seek to bring him down, he will use all the powers of the presidency in his fight for survival. And as he has shown, these powers are considerable: the power to rally his emotional following, to challenge courts, to fire Justice officials and FBI executives, to pull security clearances, to pardon the convicted.
Second, will House Democrats attempt to impeach him? Buchanan again:
Democrats who have grown giddy about taking the House should consider what a campaign to bring down a president, who is supported by a huge swath of the nation and has fighting allies in the [rightwing] press, would be like.

Why do it? Especially if they knew in advance the Senate would not convict.

That America has no desire for a political struggle to the death over impeachment is evident. Recognition of this reality is why the Democratic Party is assuring America that impeachment is not what they have in mind.

Today, it is Republicans leaders who are under pressure to break with Trump, denounce him, and call for new investigations into alleged collusion with the Russians. But if Democrats capture the House, then they will be the ones under intolerable pressure from their own media auxiliaries to pursue impeachment.

Taking the House would put newly elected Democrats under fire from the right for forming a lynch mob, and from the mainstream media for not doing their duty and moving immediately to impeach Trump.

Democrats have been laboring for two years to win back the House. But if they discover that the first duty demanded of them, by their own rabid followers, is to impeach President Trump, they may wonder why they were so eager to win it.
Don't be shocked if House Democrats under Nancy Pelosi or any other Speaker take impeachment off the table. Some will call that Democratic cowardice, but Buchanan is right about the other factors as well. Right now it's Republicans who are under pressure. If Democrats take the House, the pressure will shift to them — and the country will split even further and more violently.

Are Democratic leaders ready to fight that war? Perhaps yes, perhaps not. We'll just have to wait and see. Regardless of what's moral and right though, there are no good near-term political choices.
I agree with Buchanan that either way, we're in for a hellish year.

How Mueller Can Remove Trump Without Congress

If you've read this space before, you won't be surprised at the next suggestion. There is a way for Mueller to remove Trump from office. Let's go back to Buchanan's explanation of why Trump can't resign:
Trump is not going to resign. To do so would open him up to grand jury subpoenas, federal charges and civil suits for the rest of his life. To resign would be to give up his sword and shield, and all of his immunity. He would be crazy to leave himself naked to his enemies.
He's right as far as he goes. But what if Mueller takes the threat of life in court, and the legal destruction of the Trump Organization, off the table?

In other words, what if Mueller sits down with Trump, just the two of them, and says this:

“Sir, these are your choices. You can stay in office until Congress impeaches you and the Senate convicts, which you think will never happen. And while you're doing that, I’ll burn down the Trump Organization till it’s a smoking hole in the ground. Keep in mind we just flipped your CFO. He's already talking.

Then, when you finally do leave, you'll leave broke. The only structure in the world with your name on it will be your mailbox, and inside that you'll find a lifetime of summons to court. That's your first option.

“Your second option: You walk out of here now for any reason you like, congratulate Mr. Pence on his good fortune, and I will make all of your troubles go away — forever.

It's up to you, sir. Which do you choose?”

I still think this is how the endgame plays out, with a deal offer no one talks about on TV. And I think Trump takes the deal.

To all appearances, Mueller's job is to get rid of Trump and not soil the designated heir (Mike Pence). That's what the whole of the mainstream press and much of the voting public is cheering and wants. I don't think Mueller plans to disappoint.

Side note: If you're cheering for Trump to fall and not asking just as loudly why Mueller is playing hands-off with Pence, you're cheering for Pence to replace Trump. If so, no problem — I hear people say "first things first" all the time. But it would be good to admit that this is what we'll get if Mueller gives Pence a pass while taking everyone else to the cleaners.

Trump will resign. The scenario that I envision is similar to yours, but I believe the state charges against his children and the Trump Organization will force his hand. Trump has no pardon power against state charges. Trump will be forced from office, though not by impeachment.

Depends entirely on who wins the AG primary in NY in two weeks. I don't think Tisch will pursue him hard because she owes Cuomo, and Cuomo is (all blustering on his part to the contrary), Trump's backroom buddy.

Pence is pretty awful. We go from fire into frying pan I guess if your scenario comes to pass. Sad no matter what.

LOL. Trump will never, ever resign. This is some liberal wet dream. And you people somehow think that having the jesus-whisperer sitting in the Oval Office will be some kind of improvement? Pence was a freaking Congressman, he knows how Washington works. I'd rather have a doofus sitting in the White House than some Jesus freak who wants to seal up womens' vaginas and make birth control illegal.

Do you have any idea what you are wishing for?

Trump has more balls than brains, and won't resign. The "democrats" have no balls, no brains, no honor, nor any sense of propriety, and aren't going to impeach Trump.

Nothing else needs be said.

I have a suspicion that trump actually believes he is blessed by god to be impervious to earthly impediments... or that he's just too brilliant to ever be defeated by morons like Mueller. I doubt he'd resign. Plus states/cities will have open season once he does to take down whatever vestige of drumpf-co still infests theirs. There is also foreign countries where he has his name on a building who could also fire a torpedo or two into that shit-ship.

Mueller can't immunize him from any of that.

His only remedy is to fire everyone, end elections and congress and become our fuhrer for real. His base would cum all over themselves as they were locking and loading for the coming wars. And the left would just bend over and take it.
The military might still be a question... except the air force for jesus who will follow pence into the gates of hell... literally.

Speculation about the democraps impeaching is ludicrous and just proves that nobody remembers 2006 nor 2017 when Pelosi repeated her 2006 vow that 'impeachment is off the table'. The 'craps are never going to grow a ball until Pelosi and her entire succession line is electorally euthanized. That won't happen.

The problem with the senate convicting should never be a consideration. Fact is, the senate will never convict on a strict party-line vote because half of the 'craps are really Nazis and the Nazis won't ever get enough to convict a democrap because they are a rump minority that just happens to be a viable anti-democratic cabal due to the electoral college.
That said, as it was in 2007, a trial in the senate, properly done, would expose to the masses crimes that are bleached by the media. Cheney should have answered for torture, lies about WMDs, forgery of yellowcake docs, anthrax, and violations of the emoluments clause as he profiteered from all of his wars. He would not have been impeached even with the 'crap 60. But his crimes would have seen the light of day.
Same with trump. In fact trump could be neutered for a year because his crimes and treasons are so numerous. It might take a year for that trial to run its course. Also, if properly done, it would open up his evil progeny, kushners and others in his orgs to more investigations (money laundering will be a fascinating net to cast) and indictments at the federal, state, city levels. Also, several foreign governments might find the trial interesting for their own prosecutorial purposes.

But... still... the democraps are, in Jon Stewart's prescient word, "pussies". They're far more terrified of upsetting a single moderate Nazi voter than they have interest in their republic, states, districts and voters. But mostly what they are never going to threaten is their own ability to suborn bribes from corporations and billionaires.

Pat Buchannan is very good at SOUNDING like he has some political insights. But in reality, he's always been a partisan shit-for-brains. He speaks of a Nazi party that gives a flying fuck about a nation... and a democrap party that has a collective ball and gives a flying fuck about a nation. None of that is true and he knows it. But he has to sound smart to justify his paycheck.

Of course Trump will never resign. Never, never. He would view it as a failure and that is totally unacceptable. Besides, he has always fought to the end to "win" and he will never give up. He will destroy our government and our country first, no problem in his sick mind. And the Republicans are just fine with this - traitors, all.

Also, I doubt Mueller would ever make such an offer - he is a law and order guy and Trump is hugely guilty - he will continue to put forth all efforts to expose Trump's crimes. Mueller is charged with looking into those crimes, not get Trump out of office, and he takes his role seriously. Besides, Trump is so obviously slam dunk guilty of conspiracy with a foreign power to undermine democracy - he is an illegitimate president. That level of crime is VERY HIGH and there is no way our country could just roll along without consequences for Trump. He has committed treason! He has obliterated Benedict Arnold as a traitor! If he does "win," our country as we know will be dead as a doornail. Americans deserve to see all of the evidence Mueller has been obtaining of Trump's crimes. Open hearings of impeachment, like the Watergate hearings, would be awesome!

I look forward to Manfort's next trail, and the daily news reports of the evidence put before the jury. I anticipate it will be devastating. That is, if Trump does not pardon him real soon.

Impeachment, with open hearings on television, may well force the Senate to impeach him. When all of the dirt is revealed, it will be way too much for the public to ignore and pressure would be put on the Republicans. (Nah, they won't care, and won't budge in their support for Trump, the rotten so and so's.)

We, the citizens of the USA, are in a very difficult hole, trying t claw our way out.

Hone, I like your passion. But remember that Mueller was the one who managed to not find anything in the anthrax investigation.

It was obviously a false-flag op by cheney and the cia, using highly weaponized AMERICAN strain of anthrax only available from the dod. The delivery method, to liberals in congress and media figures was also telling. And remembering the timing... as the admin was ginning up a case to invade Iraq BEFORE 9/11 (which made them switch to Afghanistan for a whole year and also gave them a different approach to gin up anti-Iraq sentiments). They were going to blame Iraq for the anthrax.. but then 9/11...

Anyway, the whole thing was so obvious.. yet Mueller, tasked with the investigation, managed to never turn toward cheney, Rumsfeld and the cia as he chased ghosts in other directions. One man committed suicide because he was picked by Mueller as the convenient lackey.

this is why I still don't believe Mueller is going to find anything on trump. If he does, it will be personal and not political.
