Palin's Back

>

Yesterday on KCRW's Left, Right and Center Arianna Huffington was exasperated during a discussion of the intricacies of Obama's soon-to-be trillion dollar stimulus package. Although the majority of the country favors it and trusts him to do the right thing, Arianna feels there should be an informed national discussion. She's right. And what's preventing it? She says it's the mass media's obsession with cheap celebrity news, particularly the unending silliness around Alaska's and Illinois' fifth rate governors and Palin's tawdry brood of miscreants. Palin, of course is drumming up as much publicity as she can, as it is now a lucrative family business.

Arianna's right, of course-- and neither Ken nor I have had anything to say about Palin and her trailer trash soap opera for months-- until... today. And, basically, all I want to say about how today is "Make it go away." Palin unclogged (hyperbolic, extremist right wing filmmaker vs ignorant, extremist right wing governor):

David Frum is always insistent that, though a rightist, he isn't a lout, xenophobe, homophobe, racist, hatemonger, religionist fanatic, Know Nothing or any of the other cohorts of Bush's and Rove's crumbling right-wing coalition. He insists he's respectable. His wife was on O'Reilly's GOP propaganda infomercial Thursday, along with defeated Republican ideologue Rick Santorum. And the topic: Palin. O'Reilly senses Palin means revenue and loves stoking that fire. If Santorum embarrassingly admitted that Palin "doesn't have a well informed worldview," which would be of no concern to an O'Reilly since he sees that as his own job anyway, Frum had a more devastating analysis. "However nastily and treacherously Palin's media handlers may have behaved after the election, their only error during the election was to offer too much access to Palin, not too little. Those handlers faced a daunting problem: Their party's nominee for vice president could not respond to questions without embarrassing herself. The handlers who kept Pain under wraps knew what they were doing."

Their party, someone might remind him, is also his party. Frum points out that Palin is as much a mess and an embarrassment to his political party as she was during the election campaign.
Now Palin is hiring her own handlers, making her own decisions, speaking freely. And if anything, the results are even worse than they were in 2008.

Watch the Ziegler interview yourself, and you will see what I mean. Ziegler represented a new and subtle kind of danger for Palin, the overly friendly interview. Ziegler's questions were all traps, no less dangerous for being set unwittingly. Palin stumbled into every one.

Again and again, Ziegler invited Palin to engage in self-pity and self-excuse-- and again and again she accepted.

She tells us she was a victim of sexism. She tells us she was a victim of class prejudice. She complains about her media treatment-- then insists she never watched any of it. She deplores the unpleasant personal comments directed against herself, while offering up some equally unpleasant personal comments of her own. She repeatedly shades the truth in order to escape blame for her own mistakes. (She won't for example let go of our claim that there was some insult to Alaska embedded in Katie Couric's simple question: "What do you read?")

A smart politician rebuffs all invitations to speak about his or her own hurt feelings. It's not just that such talk sounds whiny and weak, although it does. Much more seriously, such talk betrays a self-involvement that alienates voters almost more than any other personal quality. Through the 2008 election, Barack Obama repeatedly said "It's not about me. It's about you." Exactly so! But Palin's replies to Ziegler make clear that for her, the election was about her. The next election will be even more so, because she has collected so many more grievances along the way.

Unlike Frum, Democrats are keeping their fingers crossed that Palin will be the Republican nominee in 2012. So is the media-- right across the board.

Palin is like that nasty virus that just keeps morphing to resist antibiotics. All we can do is keep trying to stop it from spreading. Here's my attempt at immunization.

Palin-Bachmann 2012
Because the Raped must Birth

Bachmann is going to be on the New Hanratty without Colmes on Monday. Don't miss it!

Thanks Alaskan Bob!
Has anybody done a story on Palin's odd waterbroken return to Alaska to have TRIG FROM Texas? Other than taking EXTRA connections, it seemed like a great way to LOSE a baby, not that she isn't a great mommy.

I believe that Sarah Palin was never truly fit to run as Vice President to John McCain. She could have been better prepared and overall should have been presented herself in a better manner to the public. But I think it was unfair of the media to focus soley on her and try to tear her apart at every angle. She was not fit to be the VP, but she should not have been torn apart in the manner that she was.

As always, in my opinion, Ariana is totally wrong. Non-economists will not add much to the discussion of the Obama huge bailout. Major economists both left and right have weighed in on this bailout and they disagree only in the margins. If a consensus has been achieved among experts what's the point of me putting in my two cents.

Adriana is right about the media, but her blog also contains tons of irresponsible crap. Exchange of crap will benefit no one.

Bachmann's Hanratty appearance has started a New Wave of interactive Wingnut sponsored TV drinking games.

Take a drink every time Michele Bachmann
-Lies
-Leers at camera while smiling insanely
-Interrupts anyone

Drink up if Bachmann says:
-she is a foster mother of 26
-she is a federal tax litigation attorney
-Journalists need to investigate Congress Commies
-She never said the above
-She mentions husband Marcus the de-Gayer
-is focused like a laser beam
-Chris Matthews put words in her mouth

I don't know what election you were watching, but to my eyes she was the one who screwed up her own chances by #1 accepting and not knowing what the job was; #2 continuing to undermine her own party every step of the way; #3 spread hate and fear nationwide and turning off moderate voters big time; #4 not going away and doing the job she was elected for in Alaska.
Sarah Palin is her own worst enemy and she needs not one bit of help from ANY media organization (even supposedly friendly ones!)

Anonymous II: But this is how conservatives work, isn't it? They light the fires, and then complain that the media is saying they lit the fires. I don't share the glee, however, in the idea of her being the Republican nominee in 2012. If Obama isn't some kind of miracle worker (and all signs, such as more business tax cuts to appease Republicans, are that he isn't), the WATBs who double as American citizens are going to want to run the president whose pigment is unseemly out of town on a rail. And an angry populist like Palin could be just the person to do it.

Let's not pat ourselves on the back that the election of Obama was some kind of watershed event in human history. Enough people were hurting this year to elect him. If they're angry at him in 4 years, they will probably be willing to elect America's Eva Peron.

That said, however, I'm not sure the Republican Party's greed wing is going to allow her to be the nominee. Not sure who their pick is going to be, but I'm still betting on Jeb Bush.

(heh...word verification is "sorrism")

The GOP's greed wing? Who has any money left? Greed is not operative anymore. Hence, GOP isn't either.

You poor little insignificant under performing squits you just don't get it. You are the ones dragging the Governor of Alaska into the limelight. She is Gold. Your tawdry little blogs and news-sites would go unread and un-sung without a daily dose of this amazing woman. And don't you know it. Now the real person to attack is Tina Fey. She made The Governor famous and did you see this tall tale in your travels?:

"TINA FEY THE SNL HUMORIST WHO IS WORLD FAMOUS FOR THE SAYING "I CAN SEE RUSSIA FROM MY HOUSE" HAS BEEN SIGNED FOR A NEW BOOK DEAL WORTH MORE THAN 5MILLION DOLLARS. MS FEY SAID THAT IF SHE HAD KNOW IT WAS GOING TO BE THAT EASY SHE WOULD HAVE SAID "I CAN SEE RUSSIA AND CHINA AND INDIA FROM MY HOUSE JUST TO GET A BETTER PRICE."

When someone acts inappropriately and gets the attention for that poor behaviour it only reinforces that poor behaviour. BUT IF IT IS IGNORED, then that behaviour is decreased. I agree, too much attention is helping Ms Palin to believe that she is OK, she has failed as a public servant a mother, wife, friend grandmother and neighbour. She also have to realize that she needs to get some help to overcome her failure, if she deals with it she will behave differently, and perhaps one day she will be recognized as someone who could represent a village, town or even the state of Alaska. She needs to accept the fact that she only put herself in that position, she was very unwise in the way she talked, her bragging, unkind and ignorant ways have a reward. Leave with it and don't dig down , think about the children and grand child in few years how embarrassing for them to read about the name she had made for herself.
I feel sorry for her but she will do better if she just be quiet and accept responsibility for the consequences of her choices, as a man and husband I will be so ashamed yet I will help her to seek professional help .

Can't we find something better to write about? There are so many news worthy people out there and we continually have to read about poor little Sarah and her woes. If she'd do her job, take care of kiddies, and husband she wouldn't have time to go sympathy hunting. The limelight is not for her. She dims it with her lack of knowledge. Please find someone news worthy and quit gagging us with this woman. Thanks
