THE BATTLE FOR THE SOULS OF TWO POLITICAL PARTIES

I just got off the phone with John Laesch who told me that it feels really good in IL-14. He was working the commuter trains all morning and half the people he spoke to said that had already been to the polls to vote for him. In the heart of Obama country, it was Laesch's campaign that carried Obama's petitions and it was Laesch who endorsed Obama (while his Blue Dog opponent said he likes Clinton and Obama equally). Earlier today Matthew Grimm of Red Smear got back home after performing at John Laesch's closing campaign rally in Aurora, IL last night. He was inspired to write a long and well thought-out piece on his own blog The Secret War for the Soul of the Party. It's very much worth reading and I want to urge you to do just that.

And it's a very different war that is going on for the lifeless, reeking soul of the Republican Party. The current day powermongers who were always on the ideological fringes of Republicanism-- the snake-handlers, KKK die-hards, xenophobes, religionist hucksters, anti-Semites, homophobes (particularly the child-molesting species that particular brand of Republicanism), racists, misogynists, general haters and bigots-- are making their claim to ownership against the Big Money Interests that traditionally control all parties of the Right, particularly the GOP. McCain is their candidate. The loons on the extremes recognize that McCain, who is, after all, a dedicated and committed right-wing extremist on almost every single issue, will mean an end to the pampering and position that they have won under the Bush Regime.

The Democrats that Matthew Grimm writes about today-- grassroots progressives like John Laesch vs Beltway Insiders like Rahm Emanuel and Steny Hoyer-- are fighting for the soul of their party. The Republicans are scrapping over the remnants of the GOP's dead, rotting carcass. The Republican bottom feeders-- Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity-- have already told whomever cares to listen to them that they would prefer to see Clinton in the White House than McCain. Both Limbaugh and Coulter have started defending her record on Iraq. Coulter says she isn't joking when she says she will not only vote for Hillary, but campaign for her as well.

And today, another deranged Republican drug addict, Glenn Beck (in the Situation Room), and his pulpit-occupying counterpart, Jimmy Dobson, have both weighed in loudly against McCain. Mary Matalin has gone so far as to point out what a mess McCain's family life is, with the vicious, spoiled, rich, drug addicted wife who seduced him while he was still married to a woman who had been crippled in a car accident.
