The Bernie Sanders Health News — What Happened, What We Will Be Told

>

by Thomas Neuburger

As most people know by now, on Thursday it was announce that Bernie Sanders had a medical event (not a medical "scare"). He complained of chest "discomfort," a medical evaluation revealed a blockage in one of his arteries, he was taken to a hospital and the blockage corrected with the use of stents.

Afterward senior advisor Jeff Weaver released the following statement: “Following medical evaluation and testing, he was found to have a blockage in one artery and two stents were successfully inserted. Sen. Sanders is conversing and in good spirits. He will be resting up over the next few days. We are canceling his events and appearances until further notice, and we will continue to provide appropriate updates.”

To be clear, this was not a "heart attack." He did not collapse and have to be ambulanced to the emergency room. He did not have open heart surgery. He merely complained of discomfort, a coronary blockage was found and treated with a procedure that's "minimally invasive" and almost always successful, and he'll be released in a few days.

He's already raring to go back on the trail. According to Shaun King, who spoke with the Sanders family, "He’s already feeling so much better & is having to be held back by everybody to not just get right back on the campaign trail." King later added: "Bernie is not quitting the campaign. If doctors and family would allow it, he’d campaign tonight."

Bill Clinton had the same procedure done in 2010. After experiencing "chest discomfort" (same phrase), Clinton was likewise taken to a hospital and treated by "inserting stents in one of his coronary arteries."

Clinton's symptoms were described this way: "[Clinton’s cardiologist, Dr. Allan] Schwartz also said Clinton’s symptoms should not be described as chest pains. Rather, he had experienced feelings of pressure and constriction in recent days. They were “brief in nature, but because they were repetitive, he contacted me,” Schwartz said during a news briefing outside New York-Presbyterian Hospital."

Sanders prognosis, like Clinton's, is good and recovery is expected to be rapid. I expect him to be ready to go for the October debate.

What Will Cable News "Analysts" Make of This?

I present the news in the way I did preëmptively, as a way of preparing you for the way this will be spun. Expect cable news to present the news as news, just as you've seen it, then hosts like Chris Matthews will turn to guest "analysts" to offer their opinions, who are free to say anything they want, as this person did recently:

"If you're still supporting Sanders instead of Warren, it's kind of showing your sexism" — says MSNBC guest analysts Emily Tisch Sussman, a child and grandchild of wealth and the former VP of Campaigns at Neera Tanden's Center for American Progress

While the host may be more moderate in language, you can tell what a host wants said by the guests she brings on. Thus, while anchors won't muddy the waters when reporting the story, expect commenters to use phrases like "medical emergency," "heart attack," "raced to the hospital" and "open heart surgery" when responding to it in an attempt to make this story more than it is, to make it a story about how Sanders is unfit for the presidency.

Don't be surprised, therefore, when people like Ms. Tisch Sussman call for Sanders to drop out and endorse Warren "for the good of the country" while cable hosts quietly nod, or quietly assume he's no longer in the race for real.

Ain't gonna happen, of course — he's not dropping out — but the pressure from neoliberals at think tanks, in the press and among the professional commentariat is likely to mount to great heights even after Sanders returns to the trail at more than full strength. (Do you remember these same "liberal" commenters calling for Hillary Clinton to drop out when she collapsed in public in September, 2016? Neither do I. I remember them making criticism of her health as toxic as they could make it.)

Quoting Shaun King again: What you’ve been seeing was Bernie WITH a heart blockage. Now it’s removed. The man should be back stronger than before.

And if the calls to drop out continue, Sanders has the perfect response: When you see "stent" — remember Medicare for All. Stents cost six times more in the U.S. than in Europe.

 Amen.

I'm a little puzzled to read that Sussman is all of a sudden on the Warren bandwagon. Is this some kind of acknowledgement that the Third Way crowd is throwing in the towel on Biden? It wouldn't be surprising. The only question is why it took them so long. Do they think Warren somehow is their friend? If so, I think they might be in for a rude shock, having just read Warren's newly released labor platform.

But it doesn't matter what they think. If it isn't clear by now that the strength of Bernie's campaign keeps pulling Warren farther to the left, I don't know what more proof anyone would need. The stronger Bernie gets, the more the centrists will turn to Warren, just because she isn't Bernie.

I'm for Bernie, make no mistake. But if Bernie doesn't become the nominee and Warren does, she's a far better alternative to Bernie than we could have dreamed of. Anybody who would go "Bernie or Bust" on Warren might as well be running around with a MAGA hat on.

@10:02 am

If third-way types are embracing Warren, it's to undercut Sanders. They're probably expecting Warren to lose the general election anyway and when all's said and done, they can then happily proclaim "We tried running a liberal and it didn't work! See? Now you lefties go pour yourselves a nice tall glass of STFU and leave all this complicated politicking to the adults!" Though if Sanders clinches the nomination, these 3rd Way/Centrist/Problem Solver types are going to work just as hard as Republicans to make sure he loses the general election - with the same payoff. Anyway, if Bernie does drop out of the race (which does not seem likely), they'll drop Warren like a hot steamy turd.

This is the democrap party and donors throwing all their used undies against the wall to see which one sticks. The money will do anything to avoid Bernie. It seems biden is damaged goods, plus he's demented and a moron. Not to mention that his 50-year record of racism, misogyny and corruption is becoming a worry. So their next plan will be to allow Elizabeth to maybe back into a nom and then lose to trump (, pence, whomever).

If true, it's risky. The democraps are probably going to take a dive on impeachment... probably planned it that way to appease the majority of voters who have wanted impeachment for 2.5 years while actually doing jack shit. biden may survive to the nom or he might light himself on fire by opening his mouth. So they're taking out an insurance policy with Warren. But that means that trump can't keep lighting HIMSELF on fire.

maybe they trust that warren can be bought.

As for Bernie. Well, I subscribe to what Jimmy Carter said: 80 is too old. He might live for 8 more years, but health is a concern even if he doesn't die. Plus mental capacity is an issue. I'm in my 60s and I already know that I'm not what I was even in my 50s much less than my 40s. Look at biden. he's still a racist and misogynist and obviously corrupt... but his dementia is a relatively new thing.

Bernie should endorse Warren and drop out. He won't of course.

Warren is already a corporate asset. Are you sure you want Bernie to drop out in favor of her? Warren has already demonstrated that she can be "convinced" to change her mind about many issue she once considered important.

That said, I would prefer Warren to any of the other Democratic candidates no including Bernie, whose health issues do concern me. None of the others avoided losing me with a simple recitation of their platform planks, several of which I oppose.

But if the Democrats blow the impeachment by being cowardly and timid, it probably won't matter which Democrat is nominated. They will lose a large chunk of their base to alternative options.

Bernie's older than both Trump and Biden, but politically he's always on point. Age effects each of us differently and political chops are either there or not. Bernie makes less mistakes then Warren now...so ageism, like sexism as a criteria for winning the election, is not gonna change policy. Political will and expertise is.

Yes, warren has proved to be a team player... time and again. But wall street and corporations are still horrified that if either she or Bernie is the nom, and they keep talking, some day a lot of voters will wake the fuck up. I remain skeptical.

The money knows that they'll still have Pelosi and scummer and mcturtle... or many dozens more who are at least as bad... so the president is not all that relevant... except for what they keep saying...

The money would prefer biden to lose to trump than either Bernie or warren to PROBABLY win. The media would not have to cover either B or E's talking any more and could go back to convincing colossal morons that trump is actually helping them.

THAT the money knows they can do.
