50 Is The Magic Number! Have Conservatives Made Obamacare Disappear Now?
>
Today, conservatives in the House voted for the 50th time to repeal the Affordable Care Act-- which is already covering 10 million Americans. Yesterday, President Obama rolled his eyes and said, "You know what they say: 50th time is the charm. Maybe when you hit your 50th repeal vote, you will win a prize. Maybe if you buy 50 repeal votes, you get one free. We get it. We understand. We get you don't like it. I got it." Kansas anti-family extremist Lynn Jenkins' bill would delay the individual mandate, a stupid Republican plan from the beginning on which the bill is based, for one year by eliminating the $95 penalty for not buying insurance.
The bill passed 250-160. Last time the GOP rammed the proposal through, in July, 22 conservative Democrats signed on. This time, with the midterm elections right around the corner, 27 conservative Democrats betrayed working families to vote with the Republican predators. One unhinged Republican sociopath, Paul Broun (R-GA), voted with the Democrats, presumably because the bill didn't include a provision for impeaching Obama. Earlier, on a procedural vote about bring it up, only 4 Democrats-- McIntyre (Blue Dog-NC), Barber (Blue Dog-AZ), Peterson (Blue Dog-MN) and Enyart (Confused-IL) voted with the GOP.
These are the 27 Democrats who voted along with the Republicans to wreck the Affordable Care Act:
Electing Blue Dogs and New Dems-- virtually the only thing Steve Israel and his horrific DCCC team are trying to do-- means you get Democrats voting against health care and environmental safety and peace and other core values. Steve Israel-recruited candidates like Pete Aguilar, Jennifer Garrison, Gwen Graham, James Lee Witt, and Ann Callis, to name just a few, are barely Democrats and will be eager to do exactly what the 27 above just did-- all the time. Forget about even voting for DCCC candidates, let alone contributing to their campaigns. If you want to help progressives win elections, contribute to them directly on sites like Act Blue.
For all its flaws, the ACA is a huge policy change for the better, and making adjustments as you go isn't an indictment of the law, as the Republicans claim it is whenever the Administration tweaks it to improve it, it's a reflection of the fact that with any change this big you're gonna need to make adjustments along the way. You don't have to be a genius to understand why Republicans get so insanely furious about this: they don't want the transition to go smoothly. They want people to have problems, because they've basically staked their entire party on waving around bogus horror stories. So they're furious that enrollment is going well and the transition problems they've been salivating over are getting fixed-- that's a pretty obviously noxious position. Not only are they out of step with the "keep but fix" position, they're raging and flailing against it.
Also in Congress today, during his latest witch hunt, House Oversight Committee Chairman/former car thief and arsonist Darrell Issa (R-CA) had a childish temper tantrum and cut off the mic on Elijah Cummings (D-MD), the Ranking Democrat on the committee. Here's Issa's using an old Mafia hand signal about what to do with Cummings mic, from when he was active in the street-level crime world. Watch the video:
