Cartoonists weigh in on the gun-violence crisis

I'm still impressed (and surprised) that normally reliably conservative outposts like New York's Daily News and Post came out so unequivocally against (as the Post put it) the gun nuttery toward which the nation has so long turned a blind eye. Now the cartoonists are weighing in.

YES, THE GUN-VIOLENCE PROBLEM IS COMPLEX --

BUT THERE'S SOME CLARITY ABOUT THIS CORE ELEMENT --

THERE'S ALSO PLENTY OF SKEPTICISM --

About this new day that has dawned, about how sincere and how motivating it's apt to prove.

Yes, indeed: Arm the teachers' union thugs !!!

This concept stolen from commenter "Sly" at lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com

"So I’m a teacher. According to conservative orthodoxy, I’m a parasite on the public’s dime who is only interested in indoctrinating the precious children of America into communism or atheism or whatever. I can’t be trusted to have any control over the curriculum I teach. I can’t be trusted to fairly and impartially evaluate my students, let alone my colleagues. I can’t be trusted to have collective bargaining rights. I can’t be trusted to have an objective view of governmental policy when it comes to my own profession.

But they’ll trust me to keep a gun in a room filled with children."

Well, John, perhaps the, er, "thinking" (for want of a better word) is that anyone with a gun is by virtue of that fact to be trusted. Except for criminals, of course. And crazies. And . . . um, sorry, it was foolish of me to try to get inside those heads.

By the way, among the many cartoons I didn't use is one by Jeff Parker which makes exactly your point. A big galoot with "STATE LAWMAKERS" plastered on the side of his suit jacket is handing a gun to a startled book-holding teacher, saying, "We refuse to adequately pay you union thugs, but we like the idea of adequately arming you . . ."

Cheers,
Ken

Ken,

I'm anxiously awaiting the reaction of armed teachers to the next rounds of labor abuse in Madison, Lansing etc.

Instead of politicians defending a fictional "right" to bear military weapons, whether out of conviction or fear, it would be more American and humane to spend our time considering and protecting the rights of our children to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
