Comedy Tonight: The only problem with laughing at the GOP candidates is that one of them is very likely our next president

THIS JUST IN, ON THE "TEABAGGERS'
DELIGHT" PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

From Andy Borowitz's report, "Obama: 'Best Debate Ever'" ("‘First Good News I’ve Had Since I Nailed bin Laden,’ President Says"):
Gov. Perry of Texas made the biggest impression by questioning the existence of Social Security, climate change, earth, wind and fire.

Also notable were his pro-execution comments, which tonight won him the coveted endorsement of the National Association of Electric Chair Manufacturers.

"We don't have high unemployment in Texas," he noted with pride, "because if you don't have a job, we kill you."

And in perhaps the most revealing moment of the debate, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn) explained why she does not believe in evolution: “It’s really let me down.”

As the presidential-reelect juggernaut juggers on with its ingenious strategy of effectively double-dog-daring anyone to vote for their guy, the Republicans pursue a parallel strategy of assembling a field of candidates for whom no one could conceivably vote unless beset by severe mental defects.

So now we're reduced to projecting ahead to imagine when there might be any chance at all of reversing the death spiral now apparently irrevocably set in motion. Already 2016 seems a wipe-out, with not a lot more hope for in 2020 or 2024. Um, 2028, anyone?

POSTSCRIPT: CAN RICK PERRY REALLY GET AWAY WITH
LYING EVERY TIME HE OPENS HIS MOUTH? (MAYBE SO)

I just noticed a tweet that Howie posted on the site, reporting the appalling doodyhead Perry's debate claim that more and more scientists are questioning climate change. This is so flagrantly untrue that you have to wonder why the ground doesn't tremble under him and swallow up his loathsome carcass. But then, every word out of his mouth is a lie -- or at least a flagrant untruth (allowing for the scarifying possibility that he himself believes some of his blundering bullshit).

But then, as I've been noting since the 2008 presidential campaign, the right wing has somehow won itself unmitigated license to lie at will. Of course as I've also pointed out frequently, it all comes back to the American public's seemingly unlimited demand for lies. People are insisting that they be lied to about matters from climate change to, well, every damn thing in the universe.

Reagan got away with it. Both Bushes too. All it takes is a bullshit press and a dumbass public. The press in the US is bullshittier than ever, and voters never do seem to wise up.
