Chicago Loses Olympic Bid: The International Community Expects REAL Change And More Than Hope From Obama
>
Even if part of the reason Obama went to Copenhagen was to meet with Gen. Stanley McChrystal to discuss Afghanistan, Chicago's rejection as the site of the 2016 Olympics was a stunning blow-- an international virtual slap in the face-- to the American president. Chicago was eliminated in the first round and Tokyo was eliminated in the second and Rio was the eventual landslide winner over Madrid. Although normal Americans are sorry Chicago's bid was rejected, the teabagging kooks like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Malkin, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage are crowing and celebrating, eager to chip away at Obama's image.
Ironically, the primary reason for the defeat was Obama's refusal to move rapidly enough to dismantle onerous Bush-Cheney policies that have put America in such a negative light in the eyes of the entire international community. Michael Froomkin put the rebuke in context by pointing out the Bush era policies that have made it such an unpleasant task for foreigners to get U.S. visas and enter the country:
In the official question-and-answer session following the Chicago presentation, Syed Shahid Ali, an I.O.C. member from Pakistan, asked the toughest question. He wondered how smooth it would be for foreigners to enter the United States for the Games because doing so can sometimes, he said, be “a rather harrowing experience.”
This is the same stupid anti-visitor policy that is destroying American higher education by driving graduate students to UK and other universities. Here at UM, for example, we have had great trouble getting visas for some great students who want to take our LL.M for foreign students-- including one who had a US government scholarship!
Maybe some good can come from this stunning defeat for Obama's personal diplomacy: bring back the pre-9/11 visa rules that made this country a magnet for tourists, investors, and the world's best and the brightest.
And, as Arthur Frommer pointed out, when discussing why he wasn't recommending tourists go to Arizona, many foreigners are frightened of American gun nuts, racism, homophobia and domestic right-wing terrorism.
UPDATE: GOP Crackup Over Olympics
Ashamed by so many radical right nincompoops jumping up and down celebrating Chicago's failure-- and Obama's failure-- to win the '16 Olympics bid, some conservatives are trying to separate themselves from the pack of ravenous and treacherous anti-American hyenas like Malkin, Dobbs, O'Reilly and Hannity. Some of the rightists even attacked Mitt Romney for working for Olympic success. These people all hate America and all want America to fail. They are America's sworn enemies:
Unlike most of them, former Republican congressman/current Republican media shill Joe Scarborough is savvy enough to not get caught wishing the country ill. He penned a column thanking the president for his try-- and, in effect, asking people to note that he isn't an extremist America-hater like Michelle Malkin or Rush Limbaugh.
Count me as one conservative who is disappointed that President Obama's hometown will not be hosting the 2016 Olympic Games.
Chicago is a beautiful city that would have made a perfect backdrop for the Olympics. The President was right to fly to Copenhagen to try to land the games, not for the sake of his city, but for the good of his country. The fact President Obama failed makes me respect him more for taking the chance, and the fact many right-wing figures opposed the President's mission shows just how narrow-minded partisanship makes us all.
For the better part of 20 years, a bitterness has infected our politics that has weakened our country.
We Republicans spent eight years trying to delegitimize Bill Clinton.

I just hope that Barack does'nt get arrested for littering.
It seems to me he keeps dropping crumbs of bread for the Republicans to follow and don't quote me but, I think he is leading them to a wilderness area where there is little political food and water.
Heartless bastard!
Always knew he had a secret agenda!
Pageant Walking, hahaha
What has Obama done for America after almost one year in office? Did he fix the healthcare system? Did he end the war in Iraq? Did he fix the economy? Did he get the Olympic Bid? Did he improve civil rights for women and gays? The answers to all of these questions begins with N and ends in O. President Obama has not kept any of his promises after winning the presidency. He has a lot on his plate, but he needs to take a bite out of something on his plate or else his plate might just begin to spoil. Where is the president I elected? Where is the president that promised change?
For God sake get over it! aLet's be concerned about real important issues.
Yup. I knew it was Bush's fault,
so there aren't as many foreign students in our colleges?
good, maybe costs will go down, so americans can afford to go to school.
not as many foreign workers?
good, maybe employers will have to raise the wages of americans.
and make no mistake, i was a democrat, soon to be a green.
the only change i see is the coin going in the pockets of wall street.
I'm sorry to see America lose the Chicago bid in such spectacular fashion.
And, I'm sorry to see the perception of Arizona as a gun-totting, homophobic state . . . who's perception is that again? Oh, Arthur Frommer. One guy.
Who keeps perpetuating stereotypes?
Or is it just because the stereotype is a castigation of rubes that it makes it okay? Let's slander an entire state for giggles - that certainly opens up lines of communication. And healing. Don't forget the healing.
Sick of fools bashing my country.

Let's face it, we have hosted the games more times than I can remember, yet South American has not yet hosted them. It was a good choice. Sure we were not the winner but was our package and potential problems out flanked by someone elses. Do we not do the same thing. Live and learn, we do not own the Olympics and should remember it is a world games presentation every 4 years. Unlike the popular misnomer of today, there are winners and losers, unfortunately there are a lot more losers than winners.
And, I'm sorry to see the perception of Arizona as a gun-totting, homophobic state . . . who's perception is that again? Oh, Arthur Frommer. One guy.

Uh... No. You do understand that this perception is based on recent actions, correct? You have people showing up to where the President is ARMED (They should have been arrested, no questions asked). Then you have the crackpot Governor who thinks God put her in office rescinding rights for gays that Janet Nepalitano put into place. So uh... Hate to break it to you, but that reputation is rightfully deserved. If you don't want to be viewed as a Yahoo, don't act like one I say.
I hear some Republicans say that Obama put the prestige of the U.S. presidency on the line in Copenhagen, and that his failure to win the Olympic bid damaged it. This, of course, is the ultimate of all ironies since the GOP and conservative operatives have done everything they can for the last 10 months to ridicule and de-legitimize Obama's presidency. This would include Joe Wilson's embarrassing display during the internationally televised presidential address to a joint session of Congress. Hypocrisy is spelled G-O-P.
Gee, why wouldn't anyone want the Olympics in Chicago, a leader in murder, corruption, and thuggery. Losing the Olympics saved us taxpayers billions of dollars that undoubtedly would have come out of Obama's personal checkbook, AKA the Porkulus Bill.
For those who are upset about Obama not living up to his promises, don't forget to add these:
1) Transparency? Ha
2) No lobbyists in government? Ha
3) Line by line through every bill to eliminate pork? Ha
4) Post each bill on the web for 5 days before signing? Ha
5) Unite the country? No blue, no red? Ha
6) Eliminate fraud, waste, and abuse? HaHaHa
About the only thing Obama and his cronies do on a regular basis is blame Bush for everything. "Well, Bush did it!" Didn't Obama run on change? What has changed? Oh yeah, the resurgence of racism!! Ha... 52% voted for him and now only 47% approve of him. Do we have 5% more racists since November? Is the IOC racist because King Obama did not sway them simply with his presence? They must be because anyone that opposes him is a racist. Just ask Jimmy Carter, the worst president in the history of the USA.
Onece again potus has proven how corrupt / inept he is. What arogance to believe chiago should host the olympics because he asked the ioc. The bully pulpit has failed you again just as you have failed America in your horribe term as potus. The best you could do would be to resign and fade into obsecurity now instead of later.
Going to Copenhagen on a sales pitch was an amateur move and beneath the position which Obama holds. We are clearly in a rut of second-rate leaders...first, Bush and now Obama.
Obama is the President of the United States not the President of Chicago. What is he doing going to Copenhagen to represent Chicago? And why is he going at taxpayer expense?
Barack Obama should spend less time criticizing Bush and, instead, try to gain some of his magical powers. It is well-documented that Bush was able to cause hurricanes to devastate African American areas, to turn American-loving Europeans into certified America bashers, to smash world economies with the wink of an eye, to rig American elections, and to heat up the globe at an alarming rate. Now, we learn that he has been able to quash America's Olympics hopes months after retiring from politics. Has the world ever known a man so powerful?
This might be nit picking on my part but it really bugs me. Every time I type the name, "Obama" the good folks at Spell Check inform me that I have gotten the spelling wrong. Here are their suggested corrections:
Obadiah
Obadias
Bamako
Alabama
Right. I've got a fifth suggestion for them: Ob-la-di! Ob-la-da! Life goes on - BRA!
Their suggestions for my "misspelling" of the name "Barack" are almost as amusing:
Ba rack
Ba-rack
Barrack
Bareback
Barabbas
I just got through typing up a list of all forty-three men who have served as chief executive. Spell Check tells me that I got every name right (or, in the case of Martin Van Buren, half right) with one exception. You guessed it: "Barack Obama". The guy has been in the public eye for over five years now. He's been president for nine months! You would think they might have fixed that by now, wouldn't you?
That reminds me. Can anyone please explain to me just what the hell an "Obadias" is? It's not in Webster's Dictionary.

Or maybe the world and Olympic association remembers that the U.S. was caught buying the Salt Lake City games, ahhhh the sweet smell of bribery, sometimes it lingers long enough to bite you in the but.
