Unemployment Compensation Extension Act Passes

>

Yesterday Jim McDermott's bill, H.R. 3548, the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2009, passed overwhelmingly,331-83. Among the 38 co-sponsors were 2 Republicans, Candice Miller (R-MI) and Steven LaTourette (R-OH), both from high unemployment states. The 83 "no" votes were mostly the usual suspects, obstructionist, anti-working family Republicans-- like Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Eric Cantor (R-VA), John Culberson (R-TX), Virginia Foxx (R-NC), Steve King (R-IA), Connie Mack (R-FL), Tom McClintock (R-CA), Pete Sessions (R-TX), and John Shaddegg (R-AZ)-- plus a mangy gaggle of unreconstructed Blue Dogs who call themselves Democrats for no reasons that make any sense: Dan Boren (OK), Leonard Boswell (IA), Jim Melancon (LA), Mike Ross (AR), etc.

Melancon, who's running for the Senate seat soiled by David Vitter's dirty diapers, claims he voted against the bill because it didn't offer enough to Louisiana, although I noticed that Republican Congressman Anh Cao from New Orleans felt it offered enough to get him to vote yes. The bill provides another 13 weeks of unemployment benefits in the 29 states (plus DC and Puerto Rico) with three-month average total unemployment rates of at least 8.5%. That doesn't include Louisiana. It certainly does include states where members like Virginia Foxx, Connie Mack, Tom McClintock and John Shaddegg come from. It's a lifeline for 300,000 jobless workers and their families whose unemplyment benefits will run out by the end of the month.

Using the same selfish thought process as Melancon, conservatives like Denny Hastert opposed rebuilding New Orleans; after all why use tax money from Illinois to help a bunch of bums in Louisiana. Once again, Jim Melancon proves that Louisianans who don't want change have nothing to fear by voting against Vitter. We should all pray Stormy Daniels decides to run as an independent-- and offer voters a real choice.

Can anyone tell me if Texas is included in this latest extention? I cannot seem to find a list of the eligible states. Furthermore, I read someplace that another bill is being submitted to cover ALL states. Any word on that?

I am a 73 year old widow sadly laid off from my part time office job because of the economy. I cannot find a job, I fear it is because of my age. I have already had one extension, will I be elgible for another if needed? My unemployment compensation runs out in 2 weeks.

The latest version of the bill required a unemployment rate of 8.5% to qualify for the extension. This number was chosen to assure passage. Unemployment benefit rates are determined and funded at the State level. Most States have been underfunded and they knew they would see this day. I live in Wisconsin and our UC fund has been declining since 1998. Just like all other Government funded entitlement programs the Dems think this looks good for them to spend and extend.... This will keep unemployment rates even higher going forward. Mass. residents get up to $508.00 per week and other states average much less around 300.00 max. Why should tax payers from other states be required to fund these piggy pork programs?

I like how some of you actually think your "State" & "Federal" governments magically make money. They do not. They take YOURS.

They are broke because they spent all of YOUR money. NOW the States are whining because they have to belly up to the bar.

Couple of points for you geniuses:
I paid for my OWN benefits while I worked. After all, I pay taxes while I work. UI Benefits start, and they are taxed as well.

All UI Benefits are TAXED.

Easy Math:
Every dollar I make is automatically taxed, State & Federal before I get it. I get my dollar, and every time, and every one, I use, is automatically taxed, State & Federal. That is now 2X on ONE Dollar. At the end of the year, I am taxed on all dollars I make, State & Federal. That is now 3X on ONE dollar. I now lose my job, and they give me that dollar back, and tax it again (4X) automatically, and when I use it, it is taxed again (5X), and at the end of the year, I have to pay back my own money, and it is taxed again (6X).

Please, before you speak, THINK about what you say.

I have been paying for my UI Benefits since I started working way back when. NOW I am finally getting my OWN money back, as is rightfully so.

As for % points, they are completely biased. Especially considering they DO NOT COUNT people that have run out of benefits, or part-time workers who are NOT drawing benefits. Or anyone else (State Government Specific) THEY decided to "decline".

My Oklahoma county ALONE is 9.5% unemployment...IF you believe the 'tards who work for the State that cannot count correctly. The highest so far is 12%...if you believe a State Government that taxes me 6X on ONE Dollar......

And whines about me taking my own dollar back.

What trash claiming that Republicans blocked this bill. The Republicans were insisting that the bill cover all 50 states, not just the 27 with >8.5% unemployment. THANKS to Republicans, the bill now does include all 50 states and many who would have gotten NOTHING get at least 14 weeks of extra unemployment. It seems to me it was the Democrats who were being unfair to their countrymen in many states.

If you have a break in unemployment due to an unsuccessful start at self employment, can you reapply for extended benefits?

Yes you can restart UC. I worked a few months with the Census Bureau and restarted my claim after that work stopped.
