Preston Hollow: There Goes The Neighborhood

Let's get something straight about Preston Hollow, the Dallas neighborhood Bush is moving to in January. All this stuff about how people of color are not allowed to live there... nonsense. It may have taken longer than most places to get rid of that embarrassing Jim Crow stuff about "no blacks allowed," but even in the 1950's Preston Hollow's neighborhood association covenant had come a long way since the Civil War making an exception for servants of color.

"Said property shall be used and occupied by white persons except those shall not prevent occupancy by domestic servants of different race or nationality in the employ of a tenant."

And 8 years ago-- after the Bushes moved out from their first time in the neighborhood-- Preston Hollow flung opened the gates to people of color altogether, although none actually do live there (not counting live-in servants). Instead Bush's neighbors are people like Kay Bailey Hutchison, legally-embattled Mark Cuban, whatever is left of Ross Perot, Gene Phillips (who's donated over $100,000 to far right Republicans in recent years), Tom Hicks (a huge donor to one of the craziest and most extreme members of Congress, Pete Sessions) and lots and lots of the people for whom the last eight years really have been the Bush Economic Miracle.

Nevertheless, some Holloweenies worry that Bush and Laura will ruin the neighborhood and make it into a target for anyone who might not, for whatever reason, think Bush isn't as swell a dude as most of the the good white folks in Preston Hollow do. Dallas is a very different place-- more like America-- than it was when he left it to embark on his career of world destruction and national travesty. No word on where Cindy Sheehan will be staying.
