Wishful Thinking From The Sinking McCain Camp

>

John McCain's most corrupt and highest ranking lobbyist, shameless campaign hack Rick Davis, has always been determined to make the presidential campaign about racism. His divisive and patently un-American game plan, turns John McCain's once respectable legacy into a pile of smelly crap. Today he admitted that for him and the GOP "this election is not about issues. This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates."

Obama's campaign manager, David Plouffe, saw it a little differently from the way they're looking at the election on the rapidly cratering Double Talk Express:
We appreciate Senator McCain's campaign manager finally admitting that his campaign is not in fact about the issues the American people care about, which is exactly the kind of cynical old politics people are ready to change. Senator Obama will continue to make this election about the big issues: whether tax breaks go to big corporations or middle-class families, whether we hand out giveaways to oil companies or invest in renewable energy, and whether we continue to spend $10 billion a month in Iraq or finally put an end to this war.

My friend Matt e-mailed me from St Paul. He said there are so few people at the Convention that he was in shock. He says there are very few candidates there and no excitement. I was just listening to MSNMC and they're saying the same thing-- small, empty venue, no energy, dismal vibe, etc. Now David Plouffe isn't exactly a Double Talk Express favorite. While Obama has strongly admonished Democrats to "back off" criticizing her family, Plouffe has tried to make the Palin story a story about McCain's terrible judgment and impulsive decision.
He said Ms. Palin's governmental record in Alaska is fair game for examination in the final two months of the campaign, but not her family.

"You have to assume that when you're making this pick-- if something happened to you-- you are choosing the 45th president of the United States," Mr. Plouffe said. "And it's a big decision."

...When Mr. Obama named Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. as his running-mate on Aug. 23, aides declined to offer a window into how Mr. Obama made what he called one of the biggest decisions of his candidacy. But as questions persist over the extent of vetting Ms. Palin was subjected to, aides to Mr. Obama reversed course Tuesday and sought to draw distinctions between the two vice presidential searches.

Mr. Plouffe said the selection of Mr. Biden came after more than two months of extensive examination that included separate meetings with a team of lawyers, the leaders of the search committee, top campaign aides and finally an interview with Mr. Obama. Mr. Plouffe said every immediate member of the Biden family, including his three children, his brother, his sister and his wife also met with members of the vetting team.

"If you're fortunate enough to win, this person could become president and you better feel comfortable you got that right," Mr. Plouffe said. "We have a history of vice presidents becoming president in this country. Hopefully, no matter who wins, that won't be the case, but I think the process and the thought that goes into this is pretty important to voters."

Earlier we looked at a poll that showed Obama's bounce had been greater than a typical bounce. Now that people have started questioning McCain's judgment in picking an inexperienced running mate with series ethical problems, bizarrely extremist policy positions-- she thinks contraceptives and condoms should be outlawed and she and her husband were activists for Alaska seceding from the U.S.-- and a messy personal life, Obama has just gone over the 50% mark for the first time in a Gallup tracking poll. Electorally, this scenario would leave McCain with a few sparsely populated western states, like Utah, Wyoming and Idaho and most of the Old Confederacy and Obama with the rest of the U.S.-- and an overwhelming electoral vote landslide.

Although McCain and Palin both have homophobic records and will set back gay families' march towards equality, the self-loathing Log Cabin Republicans endorsed the bigotted ticket today. Other gay Republicans-- the clsoeted majority-- are partying hearty. In fact, the best report from the HateFest comes from Wonkette, who's been reading through the CraigsList ads from "visitors" to St. Paul. Here are a couple of typically Republican ones:
Hey guys-
I’m just getting in town for the convention, looking for fellow convention attendees to fool around and have a good time.
No Log Cabin here, nobody knows, so must be discreet.
I’m 5′8, 165 lbs, professional guy, looking for similar. We can grab a beer and talk about why Obama sucks and then get it on.

This woman is Cheney with a vagina. Or Ted Nugent with glasses and a vagina.
She is a radical right winger and the left needs to attack her on that only and nothing else. Attack her on the fact that she is Cheney.
She stands for everything that put our country in the disaster it is now and facing in the years to come.
However, we all must remember that she really is a perfect pick for McCain. Palin represents exactly what got Bush Cheney in twice. God, Guns and Gays. All symbolic and yet perfect for the medieval morons who will come out in droves to vote for a cute gun toting radical righty.
We've seen it over and over when it comes to reality...the issues..the policies...the caring about others.... the republicans make everyone forget reality and always just throw in a bit of abstract metaphors like God and Country...and they waltz (two step) RIGHT into the white house. Scary but true. It happens ALL the time. Seriously.

John McCormack flags this article:

Palin said last month that no woman should have to choose between her career, education and her child. She is pro-contraception and said she's a member of a pro-woman but anti-abortion group called Feminists for Life.
