ANOTHER OPEN REPUBLICAN SEAT-- FAR RIGHT CONGRESSWOMAN JO ANN DAVIS DIED TODAY
>
Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis (R-VA) wasn't precisely an extremist maniac. Nor was she a moderate. Looking over her voting record, you'd have to say she was quite a bit further right than a normal conservative but not necessarily a full-blown fascist like most of her party's congressional caucus. The only Virginia congressmember to her right was Eric Cantor, an actual full blown fascist. (But when it came to the humane treatment of animals, she did abandon the Party of Hatred and Bigotry and vote with the Democrats enough of the time to actually be viewed as a moderate... on that one issue.) You can't hate someone who loves a puppy dog-- well... there was Blondi, I guess-- but let's wish Jo Ann well in her adventures over the Styx. She passed away this morning.
Virginia's first CD, which she represented in Congress since being elected in 2000, stretches along the coast from just above Fredricksburg to just south of Williamsburg. She was the first woman ever elected to federal office from the Commonwealth of Virginia. The district gave Bush 60% of it's vote in 2004, giving Davis 79% at the same time, although she had no Democratic challenger. Last year Shawn O'Donnell held her to 63%. The district is strongly Republican (R +9) and, although the Democratic Party has been on a roll in Virginia, this isn't going to be one of the most likely places to pick up a seat in that state, where Thelma Drake (VA-02) and Frank Wolf (VA-10) are both considered vulnerable in districts that are far less red; where Virgil Goode (VA-05) is likely to be indicted in a bribery case; and where Tom Davis (VA-11) is giving up his Democratic-trending swing district for a pointless run for the U.S. Senate.

NO, there's a lot of us out here who feel the same way, whether they drop dead or get arrested. One less impediment to a more sane and benevolent future.
Howie, Mrs. Davis was actually the second woman elected to federal office -- Leslie Byrne represented VA-11 before the execrable a-hole Tom Davis upended her as part of the '94 Repub Rev. And our Congressional delegation is awful almost top to bottom. Is she really any worse than Goode, Goodlatte, Drake, or Forbes? I can't imagine how. T. Davis and Wolf at least voted for S-CHIP, so they get to keep their 'moderate cred.'
But I'd agree with you, VA-1 is the third least likely to switch after VA-7 (Cantor) and VA-4 (Forbes). I think the rest are all in play.
You people are sick. The woman just died, and she was one of the friendliest members our troops (especially the navy) could've had.
I wouldn't have voted for her either, but good grief, show some class.
Thanks to both for answering my question.
This is a serious philosophical question. Should one rejoice when a bad person dies? Is having a good quality or two enough to make us mourn their passing? Should we lament Jeffery Dahmer's murder in prison? I hear that Hitler was kind to his mother, and liked dogs. Does Davis's "friendliness" to sailors erase her faults?
I didn't say I got up and cheered at her death. But I shed no tears, either.
Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, good qualities and faults. God knows I have plenty of faults myself. Yet I know that my bad qualities have never by any measure descended even to the level of those exhibited by today's average republican, let alone the average mass murderer.
I feel uncomfortable sitting in judgment of another human's life. Yet to ignore their crimes seems a dereliction of duty, and an invitation to others to follow in their footsteps.
Of course it makes you a bad person!
This is all just politics; we survived Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon.
We survived the sex scandals and lies of Bill Clinton; we will surely survive George Bush. Perhaps Democrats will have another 40 years to turn us into a socialist country; we will survive that.
You guys have more sympathy for terrorists who kill American soldiers than an elected representative of our government. What does that make you?
I bet you were not around back when Carter was President. 17% interest rates, double digit unemployment and inflation, standing in line for for gasoline and hostages held by Iran.
That is 1000 percent better? You are either a liar or the most inept radical lefty on the planet!
Which is it?
I was there. I am convinced that the high interest rates were the result of the bill for the Vietnam War coming due.
The lines for gasoline were, as you should know, were the result of the oil embargo, which as you should also know, resulted from our support of Israel stealing Arab land.
And the hostages? You mean the ones that Reagan and Bush I conspired with Iran to keep locked up until Carter was out of office? With a promise to pay for with spare F-14 parts and missiles? Are those the hostages you're talking about?
Say what you will about Carter, and I'm no fan, as a nuclear engineer in the Navy, he was way, way, WAY smarter than any of the scumpublicans who came after him. And a much more honest and decent person, too.
And he knows how to pronounce "nuclear".
Just a conspiracy against that great President Carter! I guess you believe that Elvis is alive and the CIA killed Kennedy.....no, no, you probably believe the Bush family killed Kennedy.
Why the hatred over something like politics. My point is the country can survive the worst of Presidents.
It is just intellectual filth to rejoice over the death of a person with different political views.
This is cool, I get to respond three or four times....each time my post is deleted.
"the country can survive the worst of Presidents"
That has yet to be demonstrated.
I thought that Reagan had come so close to bankrupting us that we might not ever recover. Thanks to Bill Clinton (I'm no fan of his either, btw), we turned the corner on that problem.
But after what criminal Bushco has done, I do indeed fear for the future of our country. Seriously.
"me said", If you take such pleasure at the death of the "average republican", what is the next step! Are you ready to call for the murder of "average republicans"?
Do you really want a government of people who hate as you do?
Listen my friend, yours isamong the sickest of the left-wing wacko views I have run across.
I really think you are a phony "shock jock" hiding behind the annominity of the internet; but still pathetic.
More pathetic is DWT who will remove my posts but let your hate remain! Says something about him, doesn't it!
You are a moron, a perfect example of how conservatives are sending this country down the tubes. Fuck off.
Let's see, low unemployment, high job growth, low taxes, low interest rates, low inflation, more children than ever covered by health insurance, stock market up, no terrorist attacks on our soil since 9/11.
Things are really going down the tube! Oh how you must yearn for the gas lines, high inflation, high interest rates, depressed stock market, inept leadership that wouldn't stand up to Iran!
Yea, let's conservatives just roll over and let you guys run the country! Guys that preach hate. Guys that revel in the death of political opponents. Guys who's vocabulary is so limited, they can find nothing beyond the 4-letter word to express anger. I bet you still get a thrill looking up dirty words in the dictionary! Most of us matured and grew out of that phase!
low unemployment
Low employment, low wages.
high job growth
Liar.
low taxes
Only if you're rich. If you make your money via dividends, you pay 15%. If you work, you pay much more.
If you're a multibillionaire, you leave your entire wad to your kids tax free. Just what we need, the establishment of inherited aristocracy. That will be wonderful for the economy.
low interest rates
Financed by conservatives' credit card financial system. Thanks to Reagan and Bush, we now owe TEN TRILLION dollars. That's $33,000 for every person in the country including children. The interest on that debt is a HUGE drain on the economy. The interest, btw, is also paid by borrowing. This shit WILL hit the fan.
low inflation
Uh, let's see... in the last six years, gasoline has doubled, food has nearly doubled, housing has more than doubled, and medical care has at least tripled. That works out to 15%/year. You call that low??
But what about Bush's claim that inflation is 3%? They don't include food, gasoline, housing, or medicine in their calculations! Those are by far the biggest items in most peoples' budgets! So our "low inflation" is just another conservative LIE.
To get another perspective, look at the dollar compared to the euro, or compared to gold. The dollar is down, down, down. A few years ago, a euro could buy only 80c US. Now it buys $1.30. And you call that low inflation?? You are seriously misinformed. Stop listening to Limbaugh - he makes people stupid.
more children than ever covered by health insurance
Well duh. We have more children.
stock market up
Again, duh. The stock market is always up, on average, if for no other reason than increased population. But adjust it for inflation, and you can see that it's actually flat or down.
no terrorist attacks on our soil since 9/11
You mean not since the worst attack on American soil in history? Not since that time in 2001 when Bush got the memo titled "Bin Laden Determined To Strike Inside The US", which talked about using hijacked airplanes as missiles? When Bush told the messenger, "OK, you've covered your ass" and then spent the next month fishing? Is that what you're talking about?
Wow, a record one can really be proud of.
Seriously, man, stop listening to Fat Bastard. He's rotting your brain.
"...Virgil Goode (VA-05) is likely to be indicted in a bribery case..."
Do tell.
