Republican transsexual to take on far right nutcase in Florida?
Earlier today Sarasota, Florida city commissioners passed over the former Largo city manager in their search for a chief executive for their city. Steve Stanton-- now, after a successful operation, Susan Stanton-- came in third and was praised as "very committed, very attuned to the community" and "very qualified in regard to budget issues," according to Mayor Lou Ann Palmer. A Republican, Susan says she may run for Congress against Vern Buchanan, the far right extremist who was declared the winner after a highly irregular-- well, not highly irregular for Florida-- vote count.
In his few months in Congress, Buchanan-- another ethically challenged Republicrook looking to turn public office into a personal gold mine-- has managed to amass one of the most radical right voting records in the entire House-- even worse than the garden variety rubber stamp he promised to be.

Cool. I am happy to stand with Susan for mainstream Republican leadership.
Wow, she's a Republican. I guess that explains why she didn't support the human rights ordinance to protect GLB AND T people from job discrimination. You know, the same ordinance that would have protected Steve from being fired for being transgendered.
It probably also explains why Steve was such a homophobic jerk to his gay and lesbian employees (with whom I am personal friends with two); refusing to promote them and providing a hostile work environment for them.
Before anyone makes any ridiculous claims about me being trans/homophobic let me state that I was at BOTH hearings SUPPORTING Steve Stanton. If there is any question about this check the official record of the second meeting where I spoke before the commission, on the record, with a resolution from my church in full support of repealing the commission's transphobic initial vote to fire him. I was also interviewed by CNN (which was aired nationally all day the next day) and The Daily News "correspondent" Rob Riggle, pleading the case for not firing Stanton for his gender identity.
I was there because I disagreed with him being fired simply for coming out as a transgendered person.
There were plenty of reasons to fire him but his transgendered orientation was not among the legitimate reasons.
I think it's high time that we stop acting as if Steve was, or Susan is, a saint.
It has always been so that victims become victimizers. Perhaps Susan/Steve is no exception.
Yeah, he was living as a straight, white, married, Republican man with a high paying job with a lot of power.
I can't imagine how he endured such victimization.
Stanton promoted his own victimization while victimizing others.
No sympathy here.
Susan may have had internalized homophobia/transphobia because when she was Steve he probably had to live a facade.
People may not be perfect in the past, but I would rather see people living for today and making the future a better place.
Hope Tampa Bay Log Cabin and the Victory Fund could help unseat Vern.
