It might have been worth hearing the thinking of the "2" in the 95-2 vote for Rob't Gates as defense sec'y, but "thinking" seems a wee overstatement

Of the 95-2 Senate vote to confirm Robert Gates as secretary of defense, Elana Schor reports in today's edition of The Hill:

Two GOP senators, Jim Bunning (Ky.) and Rick Santorum (Pa.), voted against Gates. Santorum, who lost his reelection bid to Bob Casey Jr. (D-Pa.), said in a floor speech that he found fault with Gates’s support for diplomatic engagement with Iran as part of a regional solution to the crisis in Iraq.

The rationale for Bunning’s vote was unclear as of press time, but he has voted against high-profile Bush nominees in recent months, including Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

From everything we've been hearing about Senator Bunning's state of mind these last few years, he . . . uh . . . how shall we put this? . . . well, the onetime pitching legend's fastball hasn't been reaching the plate for quite some time now.

Who is certain that Bunning is still alive? Forget the senility rap-- that was years ago-- the man is widely rumored to have died just before he was re-elected in 2004. Supposedly his chief of staff has been voting for him. And what the chief of staff has against Gates is anyone's guess. I'm sure he voted against him for as stupid a reason as Santorum did. Which is a real shame-- since there are plenty of great reasons to oppose him.
