BELTWAY CONVENTIONAL WISDOM-- IS IT EVER RIGHT?

>

A friend of mine, Matt Browner-Hamlin did a great piece on DC Insider conventional wisdom today. His conclusion is that even if Inside-the-Beltway CW is demonstrably wrong, that's no impediment from the talking heads-- especially for the really dumb ones on the networks with low-information/low end newsrooms like CNN-- to go right on and repeat it ad nauseum. Looks at Matt's examples:

• Democrats will lose when they talk about Iraq;
• Democrats will lose if they challenge Bush on security issues;
• Democrats need to win in the South to have a shot at the majority;
• Economically liberal candidates cannot win in socially conservative districts;
• If a Democrat is socially conservative, they are a "conservative";
• Rahm Emanuel and Chuck Schumer have flawless candidate selection skills;
• The 50 State Strategy cannot succeed (in the short term);
• The Netroots cannot pick a winning candidate;
• Karl Rove is the smartest man to ever engage in electioneering;
• Rove's 72 Hour Strategy is unbeatable;
• Democrats can't get out the vote;
• The voting public can't tell the difference between spin and performance;
• Only lefty extremists support Ned Lamont.

The first, of course, was Emanuel's premise for sabotaging the primary campaigns of countless grassroots Democrats everywhere. He and his machine used it to destroy the campaigns of progressive and populist candidates across the country who were anti-war-- from Christine Jennings to Dave Lutrin. They attempted to sabotage Jerry McNerney, John Hall, Larry Kissell, John Yarmuth, Carol Shea-Porter and several others using this "CW." They managed to place their own Republican-lite candidates into several races, most of whom were defeated, in part because they offered no real choice on the war.

Actually, the more I look at these premises, the more I see they are nearly all the Emanuel hymnal that has been shown to have been wrong. The mass media, of course, is still singing these tunes.

Absolutely right Howie. CW works kind of like times when a basketball player takes a jump shot and is running towards the opposite hope, not watching whether or not the shot goes in. Each one of these pieces of Conventional Wisdom is falsifiable, yet the media never stops to check if they're right. They just keep shooting with no regard for accuracy.

It's quite infuriating.

This looks like my kind of book. I need to pick one up.

Thanks for the heads up.

One of my main obsessions (and outrage) these days is the abysmal performance of 99% of the mainstream media, the 1% outliers being primarily Paul Krugman's columns and the recent amazing commentaries of Keith Olbermann. I do not need to reiterate the many reasons for the current state of our mainstream media, but it is obvious to me that we need to have at least one major outlet that does not forego critical analysis in favor of profits. But, I have a solution. Although most of the billionaires in this country are undoubtedly whole-hearted supporters of the Republican party in their attempt to turn this country into an oligarchy (if not an outright fascist dictatorship), I do believe there are any number of them who have progressive attitudes and care about preserving the original principles on which this country was founded. Instead of leaving the bulk of their fortunes to various charitable foundations, as admirable (and fashionable) as that has recently become, why not instead pool their resources and take over (i.e. collectively own more than 50% of the stock) one of the major media conglomerates? After this takeover they could then direct their news outlets to function as our system of government originally intended, rather than be a slave to the level of profits demanded by Wall street. Imagine an entire staff of journalists and commentators dedicated to actual analysis rather than the he-said, she-said crap we get now.

Elliott,
Ever try calling Omaha? Why can't Buffet buy CNN? That would make things interesting.
