NATIONAL REPUGS DISTANCING THEMSELVES FROM FAR RIGHT CANDIDATE IN RHODE ISLAND-- WON'T BACK LAFFEY IF HE BEATS CHAFEE TOMORROW

>

I understand how hurt, disappointed, angry and vengeful right wing extremists and fanatics must feel today. According to today's Boston Globe, Liddy Dole's National Republican Senatorial Committee (actually controlled by Rove) has "let it be known" that if the Club For Growth of Fascism candidate, Stephen Laffey beats the GOP establishment nebbish, Lincoln Chafee the national Republican Party will walk away from the race. (People inappropriately refer to Chafee as "liberal;" he's a moderate conservative, certainly to the right of Ben Nelson and Max Baucus, the two most far right Democrats in the Senate.)

Rick Klein at The Globe wrote today that "the National Republican Senatorial Committee has taken the highly unusual step of letting it be known that it will cede the seat to likely Democratic nominee Sheldon Whitehouse if Laffey wins. Senator Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina, the NRSC's chairman, has labeled Laffey "bombastic" and said she believes Chafee is the only Republican who can win the general election, a sentiment backed up by polls... Late polls suggest contradictory outcomes-- one has Laffey up 17 points, another Chafee up 14-- an indication of how difficult it is to gauge a GOP primary in an overwhelmingly Democratic state. But the two candidates have both said that the race is tight going into the primary."

It's unlikely that even 15,000 Republicans will vote in tomorrow's Rhode Island Republican primary, a race that will help determine which party controls the Senate for the final two years of the Bush Regime. The latest poll shows Laffey way out front in the primary. Polling also shows him being decisively slaughtered by Whitehouse in November. Although Chafee is less of a rubber stamp than many Republicans-- and less of a rubber stamp than Laffey would be-- he's with Bush and the GOP on the vast majority of Senate votes-- even more so than Lieberman.

Although most national Republicans are taking a pragmatic stance, knowing they need Chafee to have even a chance to hold onto the seat, far right extremists are howling for blood already. One fanged maniac I use to reliably gage opinionout on the fringes of political sanity, told me that "everyone I know will refuse to vote for any Republicans if Laffey wins-- which he will-- and the NRSC pulls this crap. Let's see how they like that!" As my grandma used to say, "From your lips to God's ears."

UPDATE: YOU CAN PUT ALL THE LIPSTICK ON A PIG YOU WANT...

I hope the Repugs are happy that they poured between a million and two million dollars into Chafee's campaign, despite the fact he didn't vote for their dear leader in 2004 and just sabotaged their dear leader's attempt to get his fascist UN Ambassador confirmed. They managed to defeat that imbecile Laffey, who agrees with the CheneyRoveBush mob on almost everything, because they hoped Chafee could at least hold the seat in Republican hands. The brand new, post-primary Rasmussen Poll will shatter their feeble dreams. Moderate Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse is out-polling him 51%- 43%.

This reminds of an old Rodney line, "Now I know why tigers eat their young."

In some perverse way you gotta love that Laffey taffy guy. I talked to my friend in RI yesterday (registered independent, not very politically involved) and suggested he vote for Laffey in the GOP primary so that there would be fewer political ads on RI TV this fall. He's fed up with it already. It is not the usual argument for a vote but why not...might work, at least for my friend.
