Special-edition quote of the day: America's most true-to-life TV cop show breaks new ground in 21st-century police work
>
From the morning briefing of the Reno Sheriff's Department, on the season premiere of Comedy Central's Reno 911:
LT. J. DANGLE [seen in a characteristic pose, above left]: We're automating our suicide hotline, by the way. Going to an automated system, save the wear and tear.
[Sounds of general approval]
DEPUTY T. JUNIOR [seen in a characteristic pose, above right]: Working that line was a real bummer.
DANGLE: Wasn't it, though?
JUNIOR: So depressing.
DANGLE: Automated system now.
[Note: We were catching up on the Reno 911 season premiere via DVR and had the great idea of stockpiling this quote. Then we realized that with the show now on Sunday, episode two airs tonight—at 10:30 EDT, or who-knows-when where you are, with who-knows-how-many repeats through the week. You're probably better than we are at keeping track of several dozen networks' worth of shows hopping around the schedule. TV programmers seem to think we spend our time glued to their every schedule maneuver.]

I just finished the first season via DVR too. It's too true to life as seen from my position in society. Funny and scary at the same time. Their take on Homeland Security (in which the agents are thieves and not true agents of our government) is a not so subtle shot at whatever that agency really does still has me thinking. Great stuff.
Howie and I happened to discover the show independently, and only later discovered that we were both huge fans. It's the kind of show you almost have to discover for yourself, and figure out what the hell it is—and then you're addicted.
By the way, Thomas Lennon, who is one of the show creators and plays the ineffable Lieutnant Dangle, turns out (not entirely surprisingly) to be a solidly progressive mensch. Howie got him to donate--what was it, H, a pair of Dangle shorts?—for the People for the American Way fund-raising auction.

Yep; it was a pair of those tight khaki shorts he wears on the show. And he signed them. I didn't have to explain anything about what we're trying to do to Tom and his wife. They are enthusiastic and very knowledgeable, enlightened progressives.
