ONE DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE EXPLAINS WHY LIEBERMAN IS A DISGRACE-- JUST LIKE GEORGE W. BUSH
>
Louisiana politics has always been a real swamp to me. They don't have elections when other people do and primaries don't seem to mean what they mean in other places and a crooked Louisiana politician is just as likely to be a Democrat and a Republican-- and you can barely tell who a Democrat is from a Republican by looking at their voting records. I mean the least reactionary Republican House member is not Christopher Shays of Connecticut or Sherwood Boehlert of New York, as the mass media always claims, but Rodney Alexander of Louisiana's 5th CD and for all the progressive wrath against reactionary Democrat/Bush-buddy Henry Cuellar of Texas, Charlie Melancon of the swamps south and west of New Orleans has a voting record even more to the right. And on top of that you have a Democratic Governor, a woman no less, who just signed anti-choice legislation every bit as venal as the bill that passed in South Dakota. And speaking of reactionary women Democrats in Louisiana, the state's senior senator is Mary Landrieu who is more likely to vote with Bush and for the Republican anti-consumer/anti-worker/anti-middle class agenda than even Bush's and Ann Coulter's favorite Democrat, Joe Lieberman. (Only corporate whores Ben Nelson and Max Baucus vote with the GOP more frequently than Landrieu among Senate Dems.) I have a tendency to try my best to ignore Louisiana politics.
So wasn't I surprised this morning when a Democratic candidate for Congress in Louisiana's first CD, (the northeast part of the state, including many of the wealthiest and whitest parts of New Orleans and the KKK suburb of Metarie) spoke the words that should be on the mouth of every Democratic politician in the country. Stacey Tallitsch has a tough race against freshman incumbent Bobby Jindal, a total rubber stamp Republican. But today Stacey's website features an Action Page called "Democrats for Democrats... not Losers who Run as Independents."
Before I get into what Stacey meant by that, I want to make sure you know a little something about him. Anyone who isn't familiar with a straight-talking Democrat who walks the walk and doesn't do the mealy-mouthed Rahm Emanuel two-step, ought to hear what Stacey Tallitsch has to say about Iraq and about impeachment, something that gives the DCCC hysterical fits when they hear it.
There is just no other way to put this; it is plainly self-evident and clear. The War in Iraq is a complete failure. George W. Bush's dream has wrought nothing but death and destruction to both the United States and Iraq.
Iraq is making terrorism worse. It's a breeding ground. We're sowing seeds to a bitter fruit we never wanted and certainly don't need. We need to leave as soon as possible without creating a regional war. We are not helping the Iraqis by staying. They are building their imperfect institutions and they must live with the result.
We were lied to as the reason to go to war. We were lied to as the purpose of the war. We were lied to as the dangers of going to war. We were lied to as to the cost in both blood and money. And we were lied to as to why we're still in the war. It is a war of lies, for lies, and will never be considered a noble effort.
I cringe every time George W. Bush says he's a “Wartime President” because it shames every other President in wartime throughout our history. George W. Bush is a President that exaggerated and lied about the reasons to put troops into combat. His only real claim to fame is that, other than a minority interest in a Major League Baseball Team, every business he's ever owned has failed. Failing is the only thing he has ever excelled at in his life.
The chicken-hawks of the GOP are willing to sacrifice somebody else's life. You can find them in churches, schools, newspapers, legislatures and congress. Despite their flawed logic and intel, they sound wonderful. “Death before dishonor.” “This ground sanctified by blood.” “These men who died so gloriously.” “They shall not have died in vain.” “Our noble dead.” These are the battle cries of cowards, of men and women who send others to die while their own offspring stay home to profitably work at their professions, and it has a distinctive stench.
We need to get out of Iraq as soon as possible. We need to take quick action to hold those responsible for the greatest error ever perpetrated on America.
George W. Bush has been measured and found to be inadequate... We must win the elections of 2006 to start the most deeply needed series of investigations ever held in America. They will make Watergate look like a parking ticket. Join me in the fight to hold these people responsible for their actions.
Now, you want to guess what Stacey Tallitsch had to say about the execrable and sickening turncoat Joe Lieberman? It isn't what corporate whores in the Democratic Party like Joe Biden and Mark Pryor and Ken Salazar are saying about Lieberman. It's what I'd like to see every Democrat saying about Lieberman because it makes sense and it's clear and true and might help rescue a Democratic brand Lieberman has done so much to diminish and tarnish and make impossible to comprehend.
Joe Lieberman has been given the privilege of sitting as a US Senator for 18 years. He's even been given the extraordinary privilege of being nominated for The Democratic Party's choice for Vice President. He was almost one heartbeat away from the Presidency... and all this as a Democrat because of you, the Democrats across this nation.
Yesterday he announces, "I have higher loyalties than my Party." He admits for the first time, on CNN, he is pulling signature petitions to run as an Independent if he loses the primary on August 8th in Connecticut. It seems Lieberman believes he will lose, or he would not be taking this extraordinary step to betray the very Party that put him in office and nearly into the Vice Presidency. It is an outrage!
Until now the leadership of the Party, perhaps out of respect for his 18 years, has either backed his candidacy or refused to pledge their support to the Democratic Party winner of that primary.
Today, and every day until it is done, we must demand that our leadership stand as one and repudiate this man who would so dishonor our Party and our system of candidate choice that has worked for the many decades. Joe Lieberman is being challenged at a primary by a previously unknown opponent. If he loses he should be a man and support the winner on to victory in the General Election. And then quietly walk off stage. He does not deserve our respect, in any form, if he does not.
And who must we hammer home this message to: Chuck Schumer, Chairman of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, Barack Obama and every other Democratic Senator... whose heart must be torn tonight to see this outright betrayal of our Party and its ideals.
We, the voters of the Democratic Party and our Party itself, must oppose this man, if he runs as an Independent. Even the consideration of such an act is an insult to every real Democrat.
This is a terrible day for the Democratic Party and this betrayal must not be allowed to stand.
No, my friends, this is not a diary on Daily Kos. This is on the website of a real Democrat running for Congress in the state of Louisiana. Take a moment to see what else he stands for and why he would be such an incredible replacement for the thoroughly corrupt Jindal.
LATE NITE UPDATE: AND STACEY TALLITSCH ISN'T THE ONLY ONE! MAXINE WATERS PITCHES IN FOR NED!
Jane's got some great news at Firedoglake. Maxine Waters has announced that she will campaign for Ned Lamont in Connecticut.

I wish Ken "Nighthorse" Salazar had to read this.
Howie,
Thanks for a great post highlighting great fighting words.
This ought to be sent far and wide to all of the progressive candidates and their supporters.

Wow! This is music to my ears. We need and deserve more fighting Dem's, like this man.
Let's get these liars out of office!
However, he does seem challenged in one area. His bio says "To this day, he still believes Louisiana can become the next Silicone Valley.
I think he's mistaken about which part of California he's referring to.
did I hear that barbara boxer was in connecticut
campaigning for lieberman?
After observing Lieberman for way to long, I can only take a stab at what he means by "higher loyalties" than the Democratic party. Higher loyalties might mean corporate interests, or maybe the Boy King . . . or is it possible he believes in the Rapture?
I am thoroughly convinced Lieberman has no moral compass.
That sounds like something I would say or my friends and family.
Nice to hear.
