A LINE THAT NEEDS TO BE DRAWN... FOR REPUBLICANS: RICK SANTORUM, FOR DEMOCRATS: JOE LIEBERMAN

DWT has had some extra attention lately because of some well-aimed arrows that found their mark on the out of touch, out of step and runnin' scared senior senator from the Nutmeg State, Joseph Lieberman. Other than from a couple of Lieberman staffers-- more about that next week-- the feedback on the revelations about the monstrous mask under Lieberman's pasted-on smiling face have been overwhelmingly positive. We feel so loved over here at DWT. Adam, Sadie and Sophie had a little extra Manishevitz over at the Art Department in FL-16. But every now and then, along comes a missive to the effect of "Oh you awful extremist liberal, ruining the Democratic Party by tearing down a fine and reliable Democrat like Joe Lieberman." What can I say? Read one of the posts before you comment of them? I mean Joe Lieberman is anything but a reliable Democrat, unless you mean a reliable Democrat for George W. Bush. Let's face it: Lieberman is so dependable for Bush that he was one of the only U.S. Senators other than McCain (who's been told by Rove that he can be president next if he's a good boy from now on) to support the insupportable sale of U.S. ports to the Bush family's business partners in the despotic and crooked Dubai ruling dynasty.

But a know-nothing Dem like these few can still take a little solace in knowing that there are also a few Republicans not marching in lock-step with their far right extremists either. No, I'm not talking about Tom Coburn-- but close enough. It turns out that a bunch of pro-choice Republicans-- don't ask me, I didn't make this up-- have turned on Rick "Man On Dog" Santorum. They're not against Santorum's run for re-election because of his gargantuan record of corruption or bigotry, but because he has a distinctly 14th Century vision of a woman's place in Society. In fact, according to David Holman in today's AMERICAN SPECTATOR, there is "a pro-abortion caucus within the GOP" and they began a "spirited attack on Sen. Rick Santorum this week."

They're called the Republican Majority For Choice (RMC) and they "blanketed" Pennsylvania with vaguely anti-Santorum newspaper ads this week. Very vaguely; in fact the loosely-worded attack is as anti-Bob Casey as it is anti-Santorum. The ads-- mock "help wanted" announcements looking for a big tent Republican-- warn that "Candidates who claim to be Republicans but instead use the Party to further their own personal or religious agenda need not apply." (Oh, I forgot, like Joe Lieberman and Zell Miller, Bob Casey still wears a Democratic Party label, so I guess this is an anti-Santorum ad.)

The other senator from Pennsylvania, fake-moderate Arlen Specter, who strongly supports Santorum, is on the RMC's advisory committee. But it was the group's national co-chairperson, Jennifer Stockman, who confirmed that they were indeed targeting the ultra extremist Santorum. "The ad is meant to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek, that we cannot continue electing candidates like Rick Santorum because he's not helping the party's image... We think there's a line that needs to be drawn between more extremist Republicans like Rick Santorum, who are there for more social issues, and the more important economic issues. He distracts from that agenda by bringing up these controversial issues. It confuses people as to where the Republican Party stands today... This is the first time in our history that we're going after one of our own."
