One Republican-- Matt Gaetz I think-- said the crowd wasn't screaming "Boo!" but "Two!" as in two terms. That never took hold, not even on Trump-TV. Perhaps there really are some imaginary centrists and unicorns out there who are-- like Joe Scarborough-- offended that the spontaneous booing of Trump at the world series was as horrible as the Republican who said they should all be punished said it was. In an e-mail, Buzzflash explained why it wasn't horrible at all and was, in fact, a healthy sign of democracy.
Predictably, the Morning Joe squad were as distraught about the unseemly booing-- and chants of "Lock Him Up!"-- as they were about Trump's own criminal nature. That's American centrism, 2019, I guess.
I would accord Trump some of the trappings and norms of the presidency if he ever respected those norms. But he has used those norms-- has taken advantage of them-- to commit crimes.
However, this was not just the tit-for-tat for Trump’s bad behavior in inciting the “Lock her up!” chant that is still used at Trump rallies (and they have investigated Clinton over and over).
The problem is that the DOJ memo and the deference given to presidents has been abused by Trump and his enablers. They have viewed as an invitation to crime and to keep on criming. Trump and his enablers consider themselves above the law.
Here’s how the usual methods are failing us:
• We cannot count on many of the elected appointed officials. Because of the electoral college and the fact that the Senate is skewed to the Republicans, the will of the majority is not always known or felt by those who are in charge. We the people cannot count on the Senate. We cannot count on the Department of Justice, when the AG is off trying to build up conspiracy theories. The booing was a way for we the people to let Trump and his Republican enablers and the rest of the world know just what we think about him. You know that “strongly disapprove” choice in all the polls? I don’t think Trump and his enablers understand just how strong that disapproval is.
• We cannot count on the media. Often what is portrayed in the media has been arranged to make Trump look good. Only his chosen are permitted at rallies (last week, everyone at a college was forced to stay in their dorm rooms while he gave a speech). Photos are set up as well. Sometimes we catch on-- Trump wasn’t in the room with the generals when the Baghdadi raid was happening, which we know because all the computers weren’t hooked up and because the time was wrong-- but we probably don’t catch everything.
• We cannot always count on the elections. The electoral college gave the victory to Trump in 2016, despite a clear majority for Clinton. We rallied and made our opinions clear in 2018, but we’re still blocked. November 2020 is still a whole year away, and what with Russian interference requested by Trump (and already going on) and enabled by McConnell, we’re not sure we can count on those results.
By yelling “Lock him up!” we the people are sending a message to the Republican senate that we are aware Trump is a criminal and that we want him removed. This is important because they don’t always answer their phones. They are not responding to the will of the people.
The booing and the Lock him up chant were one of the few ways for the people to be heard.
Also, sometimes, Morning Joe, you have to lock up the criminals. Even Pelosi has said she wants him in prison.
This is the exercise of the First Amendment, folks. That’s what these people were doing. It’s what we have.
Some of us could see this coming by the way Trump abused his GOP rivals and openly pushed for special treatment from the Party. Many of the things the corporate media covered should have turned people off, but the stories were framed in such a way as to make Trump look like the hero of the little guy. His denigration of Hillary (who earned it the old fashioned way) was far worse than a crowd chant of "Lock him up" when we have all seen and heard the evidence of his crimes.
ReplyDeleteTrump never did deliver anything believable about Hillary's misdeeds, especially not her coup in Honduras and the upending of a stable Libya despite Gaddafi being no angel. It should have been a slam dunk, but he and his criminal cronies were too busy salivating over the opportunity for crimes against America that they have since committed to do what people of integrity might have done.
The corporate media has picked up on the idea that both parties (not just one of them) have lost the trust of a large portion of America. You can count on the media abusing that knowledge in support of something we are really not going to like. That will prove to be a bigger act of debasement even more worthy of disrespect than just about anything any one person ever did.

ReplyDeletecoupla very sheepdoggy things:
1) NOBODY elected gives a flying fuck about the will of the people. certainly the democraps don't as they delayed impeachment and started it for the lamest of reasons; they've smothered MFA and GND and everything else progressive. And the reaction to 2008 was to keep the capitalists whole while letting homeowners and job losers blow away in the breeze.
2) we cannot count on the DOJ no matter which party it serves. How many torturers and bankers were prosecuted by eric holder?
3) it was the democrap senate in 2009 that iteratively smothered a PO in obamneycare too... among so many other things.
trump has absolutely debased the presidency stylistically. he's a pig.
obamanation debased it before trump by using it only to serve the money and not to serve the will of the people.
FDR used his first admin to help people during their most dire circumstance. The people repayed him and his party with massive electoral support for over 2 decades thereafter.
obamanation used his first admin to help the money's predation on the people in THEIR most dire circumstance. The people repayed him by staying home by the millions for a decade thereafter.
Newton was quite correct. But nobody alive in America today knows what the hell I just said.

ReplyDeleteNo report on how they spun "Lock him up!"???
