Self-Proclaimed "Moderate" Rob Portman Admits He Intends To Support Donald Trump

When Ohio Senator Rob Portman said Monday that he would endorse Donald Trump for President should Trump win the nomination of the Republican party, Portman revealed his carefully crafted "moderate" image to be nothing more than a hollow shell.

That Trump is a narcissistic blow-hard who takes special delight in degrading women, immigrants and minorities has long been obvious.

That Portman would even consider endorsing a misogynist like him for President of the United States is proof positive that Portman does not belong in the Senate of the United States.

  Among other outrages, the man Portman says he'll support has said:  

• "Sorry losers….my IQ is one of the highest. So please don’t feel stupid or insecure. It’s not your fault."
• "The beauty of me is that I’m very rich.'"
• "The point is,  you can never be too greedy.’"
• "I’ve said if Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her."
• "You know, it really doesn’t matter what the media write as long as you've got a young and beautiful piece of a_ _."

But its not disgusting quotes like these that render Trump unfit to be President.

There's also his manifest corruption; his repeated admissions that he's given hefty political contributions in return for business favors and his gleeful bragging about dishonestly using the nation's bankruptcy laws to enrich himself while throwing thousands of working people out of their jobs.

And is there anything in Trump's life-- from his serial bullying of anyone who dares disagree with him... to his dismissal of religious faith... to his abject lack of humility... to his fascistic scapegoating of immigrants... to his scabrous attacks on women as "fat pigs" and "disgusting animals" that could possibly give Sen. Portman any reason to believe that Trump is even remotely capable of taking the country in a better or more ethical direction?

Indeed, is there anything in Trump's background that suggests he's ever been out for anyone other than himself?

We've seen the rise of people like Trump before in other days in this and other countries. In America, demagogues like Trump are sooner or later exposed for what they are and their support usually evaporates.

But while we're waiting for that to happen with Trump, Sen. Portman's statement today clearly proves that he is willing to pander to the most extremist elements in the Republican base, and to shamelessly put party loyalty above what's best for the country.

I believe the good people of Ohio deserve a Senator who is better than that.  With their support-- and the help of progressive organizations like Blue America-- we can make it happen.
