Some of our readers thought DWT wasn't always fair to Rahm Emanuel last year. They wondered why they weren't reading about Emanuel's campaign antics anywhere else. Today Matt Renner published a very serious report at Truthout about Emanuel's Tom DeLay-like tactics in recruiting conservative, anti-grassroots candidates while knifing real Democrats in the process. He was rewarded with the #4 slot in the House Democratic leadership (and the #2 slot for his puppet ally). And, although he is no longer the head of the DCCC, he and his anti-grassroots faction are running the DCCC's recruitment operation.
According to Democratic candidates who ran for House of Representative seats in 2006, Rahm Emanuel, then head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, took sides during the Democratic primary elections, favoring conservative candidates, including former Republicans, and sidelining candidates who were running in favor of withdrawal from Iraq.

...According to his critics, Emanuel played kingmaker by financially supporting his favored candidates during primary contests with other Democrats. His critics say that this interference was in direct contradiction of a DCCC policy to "remain neutral" in party primaries.

Renner examines Emanuel's disastrous and counterproductive interference in IL-06's primary between Christine Cegelis and his own candidate, heavy handed anti-grassroots interference that guaranteed retention of the seat by the GOP. Renner also looked into a similar-- if less well-known-- situations in FL-13 between Jan Schneider and Christine Jennings and in FL-16 between Tim Mahoney and Dave Lutrin. Fortunately Emanuel failed in California where he and Ellen Tauscher tried inserting Steve Filson into the Democratic candidacy instead of eventual Pombo-slayer Jerry McNerney.
While Emanuel is given credit for turning power over to the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives, the majority is fractured.

Many of the candidates that Emanuel helped elect have joined with a group of self-styled conservative Blue Dog Democrats and have cast key votes with Republicans and stymied Democratic efforts to end the occupation of Iraq and the Bush administration's warrantless wiretapping program.

Thirteen of the Democratic members of the House elected in 2006 joined The Blue Dog Coalition; a group that, according to its spokesperson, has no official stance on withdrawal from Iraq or the president's warrantless wiretapping program. However, 30 out of 47 of the Blue Dog members broke with the majority of Democrats and cast votes in favor of the recent Protect America Act, a bill that greatly expanded the power of the executive branch to spy on Americans. The caucus also broke with the majority of Democrats when 40 of the Blue Dog members voted to continue funding the occupation of Iraq without a timetable for withdrawal.

In an interview shortly after his election, freshman Blue Dog member Tim Mahoney told the Charlotte Sun, a local paper from his district, that he attended a meeting with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and told her "The president should be free to maintain troops in Iraq, if the purpose is to thwart terrorism."

Rahm is a complete and utter tool. I have to wonder what on earth Howard Dean is doing at the DNC and why he's not speaking up about this crap. He seems to have been effectively muzzled while the corporatist/DINO crowd actually run t'ings.

When I get requests in the mail for money from the DCCC, or politicians such as Bill Clinton or Chuck Schummer asking that I send money to the DCCC, I send back a note in the provided postage free envelope. The note informs these corporate toadies that I will not contribute any money until Congress impeaches Cheney and Bush. No impeachment? Then, no money. Period.
Until the criminal element is impeached, convicted and imprisoned, I will only contribute to Act Blue, Progressive candidates. I will not support accomplices. I will not even support accessories after the fact such as Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.

I was just walking down Broadway and right near the ghastly Mitt Romney Temple I was accosted by an attractive lesbian and her gay male sidekick asking me for a donation for "a national gay and lesbian rights organization." I asked if it was HRC and they both smiled happily. "Yes," they said proudly. "Your organization endorsed Lieberman, do you know that?" I asked. "HRC and other Insider sell-out groups like that have made it possible for the Republicans to perpetuation their war agenda in Iraq and to perpetuate their hatred and bigotry agenda here in the U.S. I hope you're very proud of what you're doing today to further those ends."

Noah has it right - NO IMPEACHMENT, NO MONEY. I do the same.

But it doesn't seem to matter. We are penny-ante clowns compared to the megabux corporations. Who cares what we think?

Technically, the DCCC is not part of the DNC. So although the DCCC is physically located at the DNC HQ building, Howard has no control over them. Second, I think it speaks much better of Howard for not speaking up. Better to let Emanauel look like a total asshole, not that he needs any help from Howard to do that.

Rahm and Chuck Schumer stabbed Howard in the back as well. From the truthout article:

Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, would not comment on the DCCC's alleged interference.

However, a source close to the DNC indicated that there was disagreement between Dean and Emanuel over election tactics. In his recent book, "The Thumpin'," Naftali Bendavid, a journalist who spent months inside the DCCC operation and at Emanuel's side, reported a heated conversation between Dean, Emanuel and Senator Charles Schumer (D-New York) regarding election strategies of the DCCC and the DNC. At the time, Dean was focusing on helping local organizations across the country to mobilize their communities to support Democrats. Emanuel wanted to focus the resources of the national party on specific races that were the most likely to be competitive for Democrats. According to Bendavid, Emanuel said to Dean, "You're nowhere, Howard. Your field plan is not a field plan. That's fucking bullshit ... I know your field plan - it doesn't exist. I've gone around the country with these races. I've seen your people. There is no plan, Howard."

according the the truthout article, rahm was appointed nancy pelosi. if she didn't like what he was doing, wasn't it was up to her (and not dean) to do something about it? she didn't.

The Democrats are hopeless. Only direct action will stop the war. Stop the recruitment(cannon fodder) and the war is over, whether the ruling class like it or not.
