He'll be missing his #dontgo sessions
Frontenac Republican state Rep. Scott Muschany surprised the Missouri Republican establishment in May when he announced he was retiring from politics. He was considered a rising star of the far right, family values wing of the GOP. Mainstream conservatives were happy to see him leaving but the extremists were distraught to be losing one of their leaders.
Turns out that Muschany's proffered reason for quitting-- he wanted to spend more time with his family-- was a dead GOP giveaway. He was having a little romantic affair with another women, a state employee, but the day after the Missouri legislative session ended in May he was feelin' a little frisky and adventurous... so he raped her 14 year old daughter. Most Republicans are just glad it was a daughter and not a son. Still... he was indicted yesterday.
A Cole County grand jury returned an indictment today charging Muschany with the Class C felony of "deviate sexual assault." The indictment identifies the victim only by initials. It says that on May 17, Muschany "had deviate sexual intercourse" with the girl, "knowing that he did so without" her consent.
Muschany, 42, was booked into the Cole County Jail today at 2:50 and he was released after posting a $5,000 bond. If convicted, Muschany faces a fine of up to $5,000 and a prison term of up to 7 years.
He claims, through his attorney, he didn't rape anyone. The court papers say the girl's mother, Muschany's lover, witnessed the rape. The new Speaker of the Missouri House didn't witness the rape but he's pissed off. Missouri House Speaker-elect Ron Richard (R-Joplin):
“I am shocked about the Muschany story and feel very sad for each of the families affected. I cannot comprehend such behavior. It is intolerable. If the Cole County Grand Jury allegations are true, Muschany should be prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of Missouri law, including prison.”
Needless to say, the right-wing Republican was a co-sponsor of legislation in 2006 that toughened sex offender laws. Isn't that always the case! Does anyone know what happens to child molesters in prison?
