Who's Financing The Right Wing Coup d'Etat Against American Democracy?

The virulently-- and historically-- anti-democracy Koch family usually gets blamed for the financial elite's move against the democratic form of government they and other obscenely rich conservatives have always despised and feared. The move to get rid of democracy once and for all is really rolling now and it goes way beyond just the Kochs.

Organized crime figure and reputed operative for the governments of both China and Israel, Sheldon Adelson and his Israeli wife, are now the biggest contributors to the Republican Party, to the campaign to elect Mitt Romney and to both Eric Cantor and John Boehner. Adelson, under investigation for a myriad of serious national security violations as well as for corruption at home and abroad, has given Boehner and Cantor $5,000,000 each, an unprecedented amount of money for congressional efforts in the history of America, a bribe made possible by the 5 anti-democratic corporate whores on the Supreme Court-- Scalia, Roberts, Kennedy, Thomas and Alito.

A lot of the unregulated cash flowing into the Romney efforts go to the Restore Our Future superPAC, which, illegally, is 100% coordinated with Romney's campaign. Many of the biggest donors are shadowy figure who have become commonly known names now. Each of these has given at least a million dollars to Restore Our Future:

• Sheldon Adelson- Vegas and Macau gambling magnate or organized crime figure in both countries. Accused of running a huge prostitution business in China that has made him one of the richest and most corrupt men in the word. (Seems to have taken control of Romney crony and House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon through the congressman's gambling addiction.) Donation: $5 million

• Miriam Adelson (nee: Ochshorn)- Sheldon's Israeli wife, a drug addiction specialist, known for pushing methadone treatment, which has destroyed tens of thousands of lives. Donation: $5 million

• Bob Perry- Houston home builder and the original financier of the swiftboat scumbags Total donations: $6 million

• F8 LLC and Eli Publishing- Very shady Provo-based firms that share an address and are eager to finance a Mormon take over of America. Both have been linked to former executives of Nu Skin, a Utah-based skin care and cosmetics company. Total donations: $2 million

• Oxbow Carbon & Minerals- a West Palm Beach-based firm run by Bill Koch, third of the notorious neo-Nazi Koch brothers. Total Oxbow Carbon and Koch donations: $2 million

• Julian Robertson- Predatory hedge fund manipulator and major credit default swap crook. Total donations: $1.3 million

• Frank VanderSloot- Obsessed with hatred of gay people, an Idaho pyramid scheme crook and Mormon supremacist who runs fake nutritional and makeup company, Melaleuca. Total donations: $1.1 million

• Kenneth Griffin- Chicago-based hedge fund manager and CEO of Citadel LLC. Total donations: $1.1 million

• Huron Carbon- another shady company that shares its address in Florida with Oxbow Carbon. Donation: $1 million

• Crow Holdings- Dallas-based investment firm managing the wealth of the family of the late Dallas real estate mogul Trammell Crow, whose sons Harlan and Trammell S. Crow are also donors. Total Crow Holdings and Crow donations: $1.3 million

• John Paulson- another sleazy hedge fund manager who, like so many Romney top financial supporters, became fabulously wealthy by short-selling subprime mortgages and tanking the American economy for their own private gain. None have ever gone to trial, one of Obama's greatest shortcomings. Donation: $1 million

• John Kleinheinz- Texas hedge fund manager and violent criminal thug. Donation: $1 million

• Edward Conard- Another Bain Capital vulture who headed the Wall Street operation for the Boston based Romney corporate raisers and outsourcers Donation: $1 million

• Paul and Sandra Edgerly- Paul Edgerly is another Bain Capital predator who got rich destroying businesses across America. Total donations: $1 million

• Robert Mercer- Uber-sleazy, far right hedge fund manager at Renaissance Technologies. Donation: $1 million

• Paul Singer- Another corrupt hedge fund criminal (Elliott Management) and swiftboat financier who buys distressed debt cheaply and sells it at a profit, often by suing for full payment. Donation: $1 million

• Rooney Holdings Inc (AKA- Rooney Brothers)- private investment operation and owner of Manhattan Construction, which builds large projects at taxpayer expense, bilking everyone along the way of all the money they can. Total donations: $1 million

• Richard Marriott- Key member of Romney's Mormon Mafia. Total donations: $1 million

• J.W. Marriott Jr.- Another Key member of Romney's Mormon Mafia. Total donations: $1 million

• Steven Webster- Predatory leveraged buyout specialist at Avista Capital in Houston. Total donations: $1 million

• John Childs- Another predatory leveraged buyout specialist, founder of J.W. Childs Associates LP in Florida. Donation: $1 million

• Robert Brockman- CEO at Reynolds and Reynolds, a Dayton, Ohio-based car dealership support company that shares a P.O. Box with CRC Information Systems Inc, Fairbanks Properties LLC and Waterbury Properties LLC, which split the donation three ways. Total donations: $1 million

• Miguel Fernandez- chairman of MBF Healthcare Partners, a private equity firm. MBF Family Investments also donated to the Super PAC. Total donations: $1 million

On top of that, of course, is American Crossroads, the swiftboating operation being run against Democrats by Rove. As of the end of June they had raised over $40 million. Their million dollar and above donors include:

• Harold Simmons- billionaire Dallas bankster and father of the leveraged buy-out scheme who operates on the premise that the rich shouldn't pay taxes; currently owner and CEO of Contran Corp. Total donations: $11 million

• Bob Perry- (See above) Total donations: $4.5 million

• Joe Craft- Billionaire coal executive from Tulsa, Oklahoma, CEO of Alliance Holdings, which is also a donor. Total donations: $2.1 million

• Contran Corp- Simmons' Dallas-based maker of titanium components. Total donations: $2 million

• Jerry Perenchio Living Trust- a trust of billionaire television tycoon A. Jerrold Perenchio, who is a former chairman of Spanish-language broadcaster Univision. Donation: $2 million

• Crow Holdings - Dallas-based real estate investment firm. Total donations: $1.5 million
• Robert Rowling- an Irving, Texas, businessman and a conservative and active Republican donor. Donation: $1 million

• TRT Holdings, Inc- Anti-gay fanatic Robert Rowling's company which runs the Omni Hotel and Gold's Gyms chains. Total donation to Rove's operations: over $6 million

• Robert Brockman- (See above) Total donations: $1 million

• Whiteco Industries- Indiana-based company involved in advertising, construction entertainment and hotels. Donation: $1 million

• Philip Geier- Propaganda expert. Total donations: $1 million

• Irving Moskowitz- Like Adelson, a shady gambling magnate and Florida bingo executive who supports Israeli's taking over Palestinian land in East Jerusalem Donation: $1 million

• Kenneth Griffin- (see above) Total donations: $1 million

This week ThinkProgress made some important points about how normal people should avoid the cash cows that give these ruthless predators the wealth they've been amassing for their assault on democracy. It's no just about not hiring prostitutes in Macau either. You have to be especially careful about what you use to wipe your bum, the Koch brothers, appropriately, owning much of the toilet paper industry.

Labor Day-- A Weekend For Shopping?

In the video above AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka is asking us to pledge that we all get involved with a program to put Americans back to work. That sounds like a good thing to do, especially for this Labor Day weekend. And I got this message from Rob Zerban today, the Democrat running to replace anti-worker fanatic Paul Ryan in southeast Wisconsin:

"Every Labor Day, we have a special opportunity to celebrate the hard-working people that built our country and created our middle class. We also honor the labor movement for their sacrifices and successes in ensuring rights and protections for American workers.
 
"Now more than ever, America's middle class finds itself under assault by Republicans like Paul Ryan, who serve distant corporations that practice a brand of reckless greed not seen in generations. Lax regulations, corporate welfare, and irresponsible executives have caused enormous economic pain and threaten the very existence of the middle class. 
 
"Labor Day is a time for Americans to relax, but this year, when they return to their job-- if they have one-- they will find smaller paychecks, fewer benefits and even fewer workplace protections. It's time we find the balance that brings workers to the table with executives to find a common way to prosperity so we can grow our economy and rebuild the middle class."

Also a good idea. But most Americans-- like by far-- are looking forward to this weekend as an escape from the harsher and harsher realities our ruling elites are inflicting on us. And one of the premiere escapes-- almost on a par with eating and sleeping-- is shopping. And I'm not going to put it down. I just want to ask you to be careful about it:

The GOP™ get most of their campaign funding from corporations. When you buy products from these corporations, you are giving them money to give to the GOP™. You are not a bad person. This information is not advertised to you. Besides, if you have a life and things to do, it's hard to keep track of everything. I understand.

There is only one thing we can do besides voting (please do this).

We must start a boycott movement.

Not just a boycott, but a boycott movement. Don't boycott for a month. Boycott forever.

If you bring down the ones funding the Republican Party™, you bring down the Republican Party™. And please don't feel bad about it. They've been doing it to us for years. The GOP™ war on unions is one part to give corporations more power by destroying unions that secure worker's rights and benefits to make the corporations more money, and the other part to destroy the Democrats #1 donors.

We need to go big or go home. We need a nationwide boycott of those trying buy this country out from underneath us.

Last weekend we looked at why we ought to look for alternatives to Republican Party funding operations like Gold's Gym and the Omni hotel chain. Among the other funders of American fascism are AT&T, Fox, Aflac, UPS, ExxonMobil, Target, Home Depot and CitiGroup. Labor Day weekend... a good time to think about alternatives to all these products and companies working towards enslaving our families.

If You Work Out In A Gold's Gym Or Stay At An Omni Hotel, You Are Underwriting The Fascist Agenda In America

Gold's Gym started in Venice, CA in 1965 as a funky, organic operation but today it's a corporate behemoth and claims to be the largest chain of coed gyms in the world-- 650 of 'em in 42 states and 30 countries. It's also a political money-making machine for the fascist agenda, filling right-wing coffers with a piece of every membership.

When Wikipedia lists the criticisms of Gold's Gym, it sounds like a typical right-wing operation, but they never get into the financial connection between the corporation and the Republican Party and its anti-gay agenda. It's all the penny-ante stuff you expect from any Republican-oriented ripoff business:

Numerous customers have reported Gold's Gym franchises acting in dishonest and unscrupulous ways. They have reported advertised deals not being honored, billing irregularities, contract terms being fraudulently altered by sales staff after signing and problems canceling accounts or relocating. A Gold's Gym in Provo, Utah was successfully sued for fraud in 2006 for changing a contract after it was signed in 1999. Like many gyms, some Gold's Gym franchisees lure customers with "free" sign-up or gift certificates with fabricated nominal values, and then require long term contracts that are very difficult to get out of without paying cancellation fees and following long and inconvenient procedures (such as having to send a certified letter to their central billing office a month in advance). In the past, gym websites did not give membership rates and the gyms would usually not tell customers the rate over the phone, asking instead that customers come to the gym to have a tour and discussion, which often included a heavy sales pitch.

But the real problem with Gold's comes when you follow the money. The principal owner is shady Texas oil billionaire Robert Rowling (also the principal owner of the Omni Hotel chain), one of the financiers of the Republican Party's turn towards out-and-out fascism and one of the 4 principal backers of Rove's anti-democracy PAC American Crossroads. Gold's Gym, which at least in California has a heavily gay clientele, is financing a virulently hateful anti-gay agenda.

Four San Francisco Gold’s Gym franchises are splitting away from the brand, which Rowling owns as part of his hospitality firm TRT Holdings. The director of Gold’s Gym Bay Area says his decision to leave stems from Rowling’s $2 million gift to Rove’s conservative PAC American Crossroads, which has given money to candidates with anti-gay views.

American Crossroads has supported Sharron Angle, who is opposed to gay adoption, and Roy Blunt, who was given a 0% score on his gay rights record by the Human Rights Commission.

In a statement to customers, Don Dickerson of the Bay Area franchise of Gold’s Gym said:

Gold’s Gym San Francisco has long been a pillar of the gay community. We will continue to be. It is very unfortunate that the CEO of TRT Holdings has chosen this course of action. We do not support it in any way.

Aside from being one of the four people to have poured millions of dollars into Rove's destructive reactionary operation, Rowling has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the most right-wing extremists in Congress, including many thousands to Miss McConnell, Richard Burr, Louie Gohmert, Tom Coburn, David Vitter, John Cornyn, Jim DeMint, Rick Santorum... all the worst and most poisonous garbage in American politics. As we warned back on the eve of the disastrous 2010 midterms:

If you've been pumping iron at a Gold's Gym-- or, for that matter, sleeping at an Omni Hotel-- you've helped pay for thousands and thousands of vicious and distorted attack ads against progressive champion Alan Grayson and for narrow-minded religious fanatic Daniel Webster in Orlando. The owner of both, Texas billionaire and right-wing fanatic Robert Rowling, has been pumping millions of dollars into Karl Rove's shady American Crossroads operation whose sole purpose is to take over Congress on behalf of the richest 2 or 3% of Americans... like Rowling. American Crossroads has raised more than $65 million as of Monday, $30 million of which has already been spent on 14 Senate and 18 House races, according to the Federal Election Commission. Grayson and other vulnerable progressives in tight races are among their key targets. Grayson's Orlando district is awash with shady but legal corporate cash and illicit foreign money targeting his reelection bid. The special interests want him out more than anyone else. He's too effective and too inspiring for the elites who run the country to be able to tolerate him, no matter what it costs.

No one expects any DWT readers to match the millions of dollars fascist plutocrats like Rowling put into the political arena to fund their anti-American agenda. But by focusing on just a few outstanding progressives-- like Bernie Sanders' and Elizabeth Warren's Senate campaigns and less than a dozen carefully vetted House candidates -- we're hoping to help keep fascism at bay and prevent a complete takeover.
