Only In Red America-- My Husband's Not Gay

>

Utah, a virtual theocracy inside America, came into focus a bit here at DWT... for no particular reason. This evening, let's round out the coverage by noting that the Beehive state is one of the most closeted locales anywhere in the country. But that doesn't mean there aren't gays-- not by a longshot. It just means the public parks, public toilets and parking lots are where gay men wind up having sex-- just like it was in the rest of America in the 1950s and '60s. All those guys hanging around Memory Grove Park (in the shadow of the Temple), Oxbow Park, Jordan Park, Harmony Park, and West Valley City Park aren't just bird-watching. And Salt Lake City gay bars Club Try-Angels, JAM, Sun Trapp, and Area 51 aren't hurting for business. Utah is closet case heaven-- almost on a level with South Carolina. And TLC has a new TV show about it, My Husband's Not Gay, which starts airing Sunday, January 11 (at 10 pm).

It's a reality show about men who marry and date women and are also sexually attracted to other men-- and all within the confines of Mormonism, which-- at best-- views homosexuality as something to cure. And it's hardly a new phenomenon... even if it hasn't been talked about too loudly in Utah. Three of the 4 main characters are married and one is a bachelor who wants to marry a women as well. They all like having sex with men.
