Thank God the subject of gun craziness was so thoroughly aired in the recent presidential and congressional elections

>

"I think that day will come, but today's not that day, especially as we are awaiting more information about the situation."
-- White House press secretary Jay Carney, about "that
day" -- when a gun-control discussion may come

"If now is not the time to have a serious discussion about gun control and the epidemic of gun violence plaguing our society, I don’t know when is. How many more Columbines and Newtowns must we live through? I am challenging President Obama, the Congress, and the American public to act on our outrage and, finally, do something about this."
-- NY Rep. Jerry Nadler, today, as quoted earlier by
Howie in his post "Blood Money From The NRA"

I don't see how it's possible to write about anything else this evening -- now, in the wake of a year-long 24/7 presidential contest, not to mention congressional contests in all 50 states, in which the subject of gun control was never so much as mentioned.

Earlier today Howie wrote:
[Y]es, now IS the time to talk about gun control -- right now. It should be politicized to the max. Sorry if that offends anyone or if anyone has to reach for some smelling salts.
And he quoted NY Rep. Jerry Nadler saying:
Yet another unstable person has gotten access to firearms and committed an unspeakable crime against innocent children. We cannot simply accept this as a routine product of modern American life. If now is not the time to have a serious discussion about gun control and the epidemic of gun violence plaguing our society, I don’t know when is. How many more Columbines and Newtowns must we live through? I am challenging President Obama, the Congress, and the American public to act on our outrage and, finally, do something about this.
By contrast, here's the end of this evening's version of the washingtonpost.com report by Steve Vogel, Sari Horwitz, and David A. Fahrenthold:
Friday, White House press spokesman Carney told reporters that it was not the time to discuss gun control legislation.

"We're still waiting for more information about the incident in Connecticut," Carney replied when asked if the massacre raised questions about gun policy. "As we do, I think it's important, on a day like today, to view this as I know the president, as a father, does, and others who are parents certainly do, which is to feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected and to do everything we can to support state and local law enforcement and to support those who are enduring what appears to be a very tragic event."

He concluded, "I'm sure [there] will be rather a day for discussion of the usual Washington policy debates, but I don't think today is that day."

Pressed on when that discussion would happen, the spokesman said it would -- but not as we were still figuring out how the tragic massacre occurred.

"I think that day will come, but today's not that day, especially as we are awaiting more information about the situation," he said.
Really, the only surprise was that Jay was pressed on the subject. Of course there's an excellent excuse for not having "that discussion." But does anyone really think "that discussion" is going to happen anytime soon?

You know that right now the right-wing mental defectives are shivering in their boots, waiting to find out how closely the shooter was linked to their craziness -- as if it matters. Waiting to see, as they do now after all the shoot-'em-ups, to see whether they dare jump in. All because they're terrified that the world will find out just how tiny their NRA-logo-ed little penises are.

It seems to me that this country has already accepted random mass shootings as a hallowed institution of modern American life. Much of the right wing seems to think the Second Amendment gives "Real Americans" the God-given right to kill at will.

We've just barely begun to rethink drug prohibition after how many decades and destroyed lives? It'll probably take a wave of liberal-hating right-wing the-Civil-War-never-ended "Real Americans" turning to terrorism and armed insurrection before most Americans even begin to rethink guns, or at least allowing psychotics and psychopaths to have free access to guns in the name of Godly American Freedom.

And I consider myself a pro-gun-rights liberal...

Police forces and national guards are regulated militias. The supreme catholic POLITICAL court got this one totally wrong. Let's give every tom dick and Harry a lethal weapon what could possibly go wrong?
