Darcy Burner (D-WA): "Attorney General Holder: Please Do Your Job"

>

Darcy Burner is running for Congress again-- this time in a blue Seattle area district-- and if she wins her primary fight against 2 more conservative candidates, corporate-oriented ex-state Rep. Laura Ruderman and right-wing state Sen. Steve Hobbs, she'll be a much needed progressive idea factory inside the Halls of Congress. According to Lake Research, Darcy has an overwhelming lead over all other announced candidates-- and by huge margins... 47% of the Democratic field, compared to 12% that the next Democrat received in the polling. Blue America supported Darcy when she was the Democratic nominee for Congress in the old 8th CD in 2006 and 2006. In the 8th, she holds the records for the most money ever raised by any candidate, the highest percentage of the vote ever recorded by a Democrat and the greatest number of votes ever received by a Democrat in the swing district. The parts of the 8th that are part of the new district are areas that Darcy won handily in both 2006 and 2008. Her name recognition is 55%. Ruderman's is only 14%.

Darcy's idea in the video above, though, isn't really political, let alone partisan. She's simply asking Attorney General Holder to do his job. I think most Americans-- maybe all Americans who don't have 7-figure jobs on Wall Street-- would agree.

It's illegal-- illegal because Congress passed (425-0) the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act making it illegal-- for predatory banksters to foreclose on active duty servicemen and woman fighting America's wars. We want them fighting our enemies, not worrying if their families will have to sleep under a bridge. But banksters have ignored the law and foreclosed on thousands of soldiers stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan anyway. It's not enough to make them stop. They need to be arrested-- if not pepper-sprayed-- and charged and tried and, if found guilty, punished... just as though they were ordinary people breaking serious laws. Or, as Mojo Nixon put it so much more poetically, "I want to see a bank president twitch in a ditch."

At least New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is investigating. But what about the rest of us, who don't live in New York? This defines Justice in these times and these banksters have gotten away with too much for too long. This doesn't call for another backroom Holder deal to let the banksters/Obama campaign contributors off with a slap on the wrist. If Holder can't uphold the law, he should either resign or be fired. Now! Watch Darcy's video statement again up today. This is what a 2012 law and order candidate sounds like.

UPDATE: Letter From Laura

This e-mail from conservative candidate Laura Ruderman is exactly what a Blue Dog sounds like. She's not a Republican; she's a Democrat, but a Democrat who is clueless that the GOP is waging a relentless class war against ordinary American families, a class war they are winning because of tepid corporate shills... like Laura Ruderman. Washington state deserves better-- much better:

• False choices and oppositional stances rarely lead to good outcomes. I'm tired of being asked if I am pro-business or pro-labor. I am pro a thriving economy in which people make a good wage and have decent benefits and business makes enough profit to invest in the future and weather hard times. A strong labor movement improves wages and working conditions for everyone and creates strong customers, which is the most important thing any business can have, either directly or indirectly. No one knows this better than Boeing. When people stop flying, airlines stop buying, and that's not good for anyone. We are all in this together and when we can come together around shared goals, as happened here, everyone wins.

• Compromise is not the same as capitulation. Too often today we hear compromise spat out of someone's mouth like it's a four letter word, or used as a club to bludgeon the other side over the head. But compromise is necessary for two sides to reach an agreement.

She sounds an awful lot like John Barrow, Jim Matheson and Heath Shuler.

One important point: servicemembers are not fighting our enemies as much as supporting corporate profit. They are creating enemies by killing civilians and destroying other countries' infrastructures.

I wish I could say third time's a charm for Burner. I just moved into her district, having lived in Western WA for 15 years. Yes, she raised money, but she didn't know how to campaign against a flawed living legend with incredible hair: Dave Reichert, the GOP sock puppet better known as the man who caught the Green River Killer. Except he didn't. As sheriff, he probably did more to delay the arrest and prosecution of Gary Ridgway, but facts don't matter. People came out to vote exclusively for their hero with the excitingly silver hair.

What Darcy didn't do, with all of her safe, prefab "progressive" cred, is bitch slap the Seattle Times after they threw mud on her in 2008. If I'd donated to her first and second campaign, I'd be less than enthusiastic about this one. She says she's progressive, but doesn't seem to like getting any mud on her and throwing it back. She's a weak campaigner. There, I said it.

I'll vote for her but it will be like voting for Gore. It wasn't Ralph that killed him. It was Gore running with two hands tied behind his back. Darcy is sort of like Gore, except she just doesn't have the heat to even try to step up and win. Ruderman, like Darcy, is ex-Microsoft. Look at Darcy's past campaign performance. Unless she defines herself more strongly, Laura can just sit back and slam her the way the Times did, bank on her experience without honestly answering a single issue, and if Darcy says anything, she'll be to weak to hear. I wish Burner would get some fire or drop out and gift a stronger candidate with a warchest.
