Who Lied About How They Would Vote On The Satan Sandwich?
>
Congratulations to Gabby Giffords for making it back to Congress to vote and being the surprise-- except for Wasserman Schultz and Pelosi-- 95th Democratic Party vote for the Republican agenda, tying the 95 actual Democrats who opposed it. As my old pal Susan Klein remarked on Twitter, it was the most dramatic comeback performance since Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall in 1961. Gabby's appearance meant much more to the assembled politicians-- actually, of both parties-- than Judy's did to anyone but the gays. It was a good moment for the nation-- and a great smokescreen for the supposed defenders of working people, like Wasserman Schultz-- who could use it to change the subject when anyone wondered why she had just given John Boehner 98% of what he wanted.
Debbie Wasserman Schultz's vote was never in doubt of course. She's the ultimate political hack and always has been. Rahm didn't pick her for a leadership role at the DCCC and Obama didn't pick her to head the DNC because she's got an independent spirit or a conscience. She's very nice on women's issues, though... more than one can say about many of the Blue Dogs she relentlessly promotes. But at least Debbie never held out hope that she might take the side of working families and reject the Satan Sandwich. How about the duplicitous Democrats who signed the Grijalva-Ellison letter to Pelosi pledging to never vote for any bill that jeopardizes Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, which, despite indignant protestations to the contrary by the likes of Debbie Wasserman Schultz, this bill certainly does? The Caucus itself only lost 15 members in the vote yesterday but some of the non-Caucus signers found Wasserman Schultz's and Obama's arguments to back everything Boehner wanted suddenly very persuasive.
The vast majority of the 87 Democrats who signed the letter were true to their word and voted NO-- against the Satan Sandwich. Who broke their word and betrayed their constituents?

A bigger shock came when three Blue Dogs who rarely take the side of working families over Big Business came over to the progressive side in Monday's night's vote-- Leonard Boswell (IA), Dennis Cardoza (CA) and, most shocking of all, Mike McIntyre (NC).
Even before Kissinger's infamous tweet, Matt Taibbi made the same point in Rolling Stone.
The popular take is that Obama is a weak leader of a weak party who was pushed around by canny right-wing extremists. Observers like pollster Sydney Greenberg portray Obama and the Democrats as a group of politically tone-deaf bureaucrats who fail because the public associates them with a corrupt government that benefits the rich and connected.
The Democrats, Greenberg argues, could change their situation by showing the public that they genuinely represent the interests of ordinary working people... But to a bunch of hired stooges put in office to lend an air of democratic legitimacy to what has essentially become a bureaucratic-oligarchic state, what good does such advice do? Would it have made sense to send the Supreme Soviet under Andropov or Brezhnyev a list of policy ideas for enhancing the civil liberties of Soviet citizens?
The Democrats aren't failing to stand up to Republicans and failing to enact sensible reforms that benefit the middle class because they genuinely believe there's political hay to be made moving to the right. They're doing it because they do not represent any actual voters. I know I've said this before, but they are not a progressive political party, not even secretly, deep inside. They just play one on television.
For evidence, all you have to do is look at this latest fiasco.
The Republicans in this debt debate fought like wolves or alley thugs, biting and scratching and using blades and rocks and shards of glass and every weapon they could reach.
The Democrats, despite sitting in the White House, the most awesome repository of political power on the planet, didn't fight at all. They made a show of a tussle for a good long time-- as fixed fights go, you don't see many that last into the 11th and 12th rounds, like this one did-- but at the final hour, they let out a whimper and took a dive.
We probably need to start wondering why this keeps happening. Also, this: if the Democrats suck so bad at political combat, then how come they continue to be rewarded with such massive quantities of campaign contributions? When the final tally comes in for the 2012 presidential race, who among us wouldn't bet that Barack Obama is going to beat his Republican opponent in the fundraising column very handily? At the very least, he won't be out-funded, I can almost guarantee that.
And what does that mean? Who spends hundreds of millions of dollars for what looks, on the outside, like rank incompetence?
It strains the imagination to think that the country's smartest businessmen keep paying top dollar for such lousy performance. Is it possible that by "surrendering" at the 11th hour and signing off on a deal that presages deep cuts in spending for the middle class, but avoids tax increases for the rich, Obama is doing exactly what was expected of him?
So let me go back to the Blue America statement penned for us by Alan Grayson:
We who sign this make the following pledge, to the voters of our districts and to all the American People:
We Are Against Any and Every Cut to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits. Not today, not tomorrow, and not ever. No way, no how. Not on your life, and not on mine, because both your life and my life may depend on it.
N-E-V-E-R.
Every Blue America candidate has either signed this letter or issued their own statement in their own words equally powerful. Blue America won't be endorsing any incumbents who voted for the Satan Sandwich and won't be endorsing any challengers who don't embrace this pledge to the American people. It's the bottom line. I still hope Mazie Hirono beats Ed Case in Hawaii, of course, but as of yesterday, Blue America ceased raising funds for her. Give your donations to Bernie Sanders instead. One of our Blue America-endorsed candidates, Nick Ruiz (D-FL), the first to sign the pledge, went on to explain what's gone wrong the day after the vote:
All of the American people can’t be wrong.
All of their needs can’t be wrong.
What is wrong is the turn down the Republican rabbit hole. Lost, we are. BHO abdicates executive responsibility by refusing to act to the point of inertia. Republican John Boehner (OH-8) and Company acted extremely. All Cuts are therefore “IN.” In accompaniment, HSBC announces they will shed 30,000 jobs in 2011-2012. This is the coming Age of Austerity. What a howler- cut New Deal programs at the very same time that practically every large corporation in America is cutting jobs and hording cash. ‘Satan sandwich’ anyone?
The American people could be celebrating a democratic victory, if there was one to recognize. Instead, we are faced with the nuts and bolts of the reality of being sold-out under the auspices of a short term ceiling hike and a long term hatchet committee with an appetite for New Deal destruction.
How to put it back together again, as they tear it apart? 2012.
The 2012 playbook is very simple: reject any and every candidate that stands in the way of progressive democracy. Reserve your support; however you give it, for those progressive Democratic candidates that would act in your interest.
You’ll have to be savvy-– because the all too corporate party machinery will be out to trick you with the ruse of mechanical candidates and party-line robots. But the power to represent us is yours to take or give. The power is in your vote. It’s in your contributions. It’s in the time you volunteer. It’s in your letters to the editors of newspapers and blogs.
Hope? Change? No, we haven’t. But I promise you-- we will.

Excellent and important. THank you.
The entire Iowa delegation voted no. Tom gave a really eloquent speech on the floor, explaining the right reasons for voting no. King and Latham always do things for the wrong reasons. Boswell will have to run against Latham with redistricting, so he probably figures he took a stick away from him with this vote. Or, from the department of anything's possible, he could have been persuaded by Tom.

Thank you Howie. This is what people have yet to understand.
Yes Jody, but there's further levels of understanding necessary. Most of the 87 who pledged not to vote for it didn't. But their votes weren't necessary for passage anyway. What if they had been? They're all Kabuki frauds who would've caved if Obama need their vote. Just like Kucinich did after his infamous ride on Air Force One.
Even the "Satan Sandwich" guy voted for it. But he made sure to let people know he felt very bad about it. Oh well then, that makes all the difference...
Democrats continue to exist because the states have granted a ballot monopoly to the RepubliCrat party. It is so difficult for anyone other than a RepubliCrat to get on the ballot that voters are left continually to choose the lesser of two weevils. Democrats get votes because people hate Republicans not because they like Democrats. Same for campaign dollars.
"Satan Sandwich"? Boy, that's polite. I was thinking something else entirely....
I live in the State of sell outs, Washington State. These clowns have had my vote for far too long. I'm very serious when I say, "I will NOT vote for ANY candidate from either major party". The sooner the two party aristocracy is demolished, the better. The ONLY way to get our message across is for democrats to be sent to the deep dark woods for a long time.
And for President Onixon, my most sincere HOPE is that CHANGE happens in 2012. If we are going to have Republican policies, then let them take responsibility for it and then we'll see how it shakes out.
I believe it was Einstein who first said, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. The sad fact is, unless Progressives start doing something different, something besides continuing to blindly support the "republican-lite" Democratic Party, then we're just going to continue getting the same results--a steady movement to the right.
Yes, it's imperative that we only vote for candidates that have proven to have our best progressive interests at heart and to support the ouster of candidates, regardless of Party, who fail to fight for and to advance our Progressive goals.
Let's face it, our country is going through some extremely bad times, and it's going to get a lot worse. I won't be voting for Obama in the next election even though it will theoretically improve the chances of having another Republican President. Yes, another Republicans administration will be disastrous, but we're facing disaster either way; at this point it's ineluctable. It's time to stop always retreating backward and to hold our position. Only then will Democratic politicians see that they will either have to become Republicans (officially) or get on board and start fighting for the real America. It's time to end our support for the lite-Republicans and start fighting back. It's going to hurt, but it's the only way back.
Obama has caved one too many times for me. He crossed my line on this debt deal and will not be receiving my vote. I wish he'd have a primary challenge.
I'm beginning to think that the American citizens were played for fools. The whole scenario was maybe a stage play, played out in constant speeches and arguments in the Congress. Hypothesis: The President says to the GOP Majority leader while playing golf ~ "Well, listen boys! I want to go along with you (once again) in this dirty deal, but you gotta know that I will lose the trust of my party if I do. So let's play it out until the 11th hour. I'll make lots of explanatory speeches along the way and you can have impromptu press coverage on how unreasonable I am. We'll argue back and forth until the public gets good and tired of it, then at the 11th hour, we'll vote it thru. I think that will be good for my image." Crybaby John answers "It's a deal and I promise not to cry during the press coverage. Everybody will see that I am finally growing up and that will be good for my image." They do the knuckle bump and continue to play gold.
What they don't know is, the Koch Brothers "think tanks" have been very, very busy........
Matt Taibbi is right, Obama didn't "cave", he got exactly what he wanted two fold. He gave the rich and big business who put him into office what they wanted, and he gave the simpled minded Democrats that put him into office the appearance that he was "forced" into it.
As a NON-American, I'm very happy with the results. The USA is the #1 terrorist state in the world and gives full support to other terrorist regimes like the #2 terrorist state, APARTHEID Israel and of course ALL the dictators in the Middle East and Latin America that do US bidding. This "deal" will finally help make the US Government as bankrupt financially as it is morally. Only when the USA goes the way of the USSR will there be more PEACE in the world.
Wake up. We will not do better as long as the left refuses to see Obama as an obstacle to progress; a willing co-conspirator of the Republicans and faux democratic Blue Dogs and DLCers...a Wall Street tool! It is time to rally AWAY from a Democratic Party that is no longer pro labor or pro main street. A Democratic Party that refuses to admit that Bill Clinton (tool of Wallmart and Wall Street) did massive damage with deregulation of Wall Street and passing GAT and NAFTA. A Democratic Party in love with "free trade" deals, and complacent regarding off-shoring/out-sourcing of jobs and assets...who refuses to acknowledge class warfare and fight back on our behalf.
No investigations into what and who caused the financial collapse?!? No prosecutions and no end to the looting?!? Tax payer money (TARP) handed to the looters who then pocketed it?!? The proceeds of the looting taxed at 15%??? The looters standard of living continuing to soar while their victims continue hemorrhaging jobs and homes?!? "Shared sacrifice" going forward??? It should have been: "we've been sacrificing for three years while the looters continued to prosper; now its their turn!!!" Instead, Obama just gave the store away. No revenue?!? No money for work programs like a WPA or a CCC.
Our energy has been wasted. Our petitions and dollars have yielded negative results. We are being ignored...worse...our leaders pride themselves on distancing themselves from us! We need to identify the problem and deal with it. THIRD PARTY. We can't afford four more years of this slick talking LIAR. He is actually doing more damage than Bush: more spending for the military industrial complex (and more wars); more for big pharma and the insurance industry; more for Wall Street looters; more Big Brother; etc. I can no longer distinguish between "the lesser of two evils:" it's a tie.
TAX THE LOOTING RICH!!! No more discounts! Drop the deductions! Lose the loopholes! Shut the shelters! End the off-shoring! Close the Caymans! Sanction the Swiss (UBS & Credit Suisse)! ELIMINATE the cap on Social Security Tax! These out-sourcing Globalists do not need or deserve discounts!!!
By ignoring this realty, we are encouraging more of this abuse. I will no longer support this Democratic Party. I will no longer support Obama. And, I will no longer support organizations or faux-progressives that do.
