Not even Tom Tomorrow is wild enough to imagine right-wing alarm at that dread weapon of international terror . . . bicycles!

Our colleague and pal Sam Smith (of Scholars & Rogues and a dizzying assortment of other ventures), a Colorado resident, was the first person I saw sounding the alarm about this utterly unexpected alarm sounded by an unusually, er, vigilant candidate for the state's GOP gubernatorial nomination, as reported by the AP in the Colorado & Denver News:
Maes Says Bike Share Threatens 'Personal Freedoms'
DENVER (AP) ― Colorado Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes says a Denver bike-sharing program could threaten residents' "personal freedoms" because it is part of an attempt to control U.S. cities.
Maes said last week that an international environmental group that promotes Denver's B-Cycle program is part of a "greater strategy to rein in American cities under a United Nations treaty." . . .
Sam's comment was: "I'm trying to imagine how absolutely barking it's going to be around here by November," but it could be that he's just bragging about the particular nuttiness of his home state. The reality, though, is that there is apparently no longer any filter on public political nuttiness, anywhere in these United States. Brace yourselves, it's going to be a rocky ride to November, ladies and germs.
UPDATE: Oops, sorry, I omitted the link for the Colorado & Denver News story on Colorado's would-be governor. It's there now.
