Why Boycott Glenn Beck's Advertisers?

>

This is a letter James Rucker sent to the 600,000 members of Color of Change, urging them to fight back against Glenn Beck's blatant racist attacks against President Obama.
Dear ColorOfChange.org member,

More and more, right-wing talk show hosts are bringing race-based fear mongering into the mainstream, but FOX’s Glenn Beck just took it to another level. On Tuesday, Beck said:
This president has exposed himself as a guy over and over and over again who has a deep-seated hatred for white people… this guy is, I believe, a racist.

It’s part of a larger argument Beck has been making: that President Obama is using the White House to serve the needs of Black communities at White people’s expense. This kind of talk stirs up fear, hate, and it can lead to violence.

Together we can stop Glenn Beck. Starting today we’re calling Beck’s advertisers, asking them if they want to be associated with this kind of racist hate and fear-mongering. When they see tens of thousands of people signing on behind that question, we believe they’ll move their advertising dollars elsewhere, damaging the viability of his show and possibly putting him out of business.

All it requires is you, standing up and being counted. Please take a moment to join the effort, and invite your friends and family to do the same:

http://www.colorofchange.org/beck/

Glenn Beck is appealing to the worst in America. Of course, some people refuse to accept the fact that our president is Black or the idea that he could truly serve all Americans. We know that. The only way these views will fade away is if they’re not reinforced by mainstream society. Instead, folks like Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs, and Rush Limbaugh are exploiting racism and race-based fear to bump their ratings, stirring up racial discord in the process.

The dangers of these tactics are real. We saw the same dynamic during the presidential race: by the end, the McCain/Palin campaign was unable to control the violent energy whipped up by their race-baiting. The result was an unprecedented number of threats on Obama’s life, a rise in the number of hate groups, and an increase in the number of threats and crimes against immigrants and Black people.

FOX has had a long history of race-baiting and racism on its shows, and we’ve run campaigns calling them out. But Glenn Beck appears to be taking the network to an even lower standard. He’s trying to divide and distract America when we should be coming together and talking about issues that really matter–like health care and the economy.

The good news is that we have the power to stop this. All major media is funded by advertising. And advertisers, more than anything, care what consumers think. If we want to change what’s happening and put an end to folks like Glenn Beck having a platform, we can do it.

C'mon. Folks have been plotting to, talking about, and trying to boycott their sponsors for 20 years and nothing changes.

Oh mebbe a sponsor or two drops off.

But they are IMMEDIATELY replaced.

Color of Change doesn't seem to have a campaign going against Beck. I followed your link and nothing happened so I went to the main page and then clicked "campaigns" and there's nothing about Beck.

I'm all for trying to stop Beck, however I feel it's kinda like trying to stop nicotine or soft drinks. There are people who want to kill themselves with misinformation because it feeds their deeply loved prejudices. Some people like to be dumb -- it makes them feel smart. What can you say?

Clearly Beck is one of those people, and he has a following.

Faux (aka Rupert Murdoch) doesn't understand America, doesn't love America, and became a citizen to make money, not love. He doesn't care what happens to whom, he just wants to be the richest man in the world. You gonna cut his advertisers too?

We've put the premium on "rich is best" - capitalism over democracy, money over everything. Until we get to a better mental/emotional place viz-a-viz money as a society, we will continue to welcome scum like Murdoch into the fold and get what we deserve for it.

Beck's ratings have actually improved with his shift from typical rightwing nutbag to far right nutbag clown prince. And since ratings are what impresses advertisers the most, I can't see a boycott by people who don't watch Beck doing much. The Fairness Doctrine's going to be the only thing to put a leash (though not a muzzle) on Murdoch's pitbulls, Howie. At least, that's the way I see it.

There is nothing liberal or conservative about standing up against Hate Speech, Lies and Racism. Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs and Rush Limbaugh report lies as the truth and make it up as they go. Anybody sponsoring them is on the side of lies. When was the last time Corp. America told you the truth.

Meaning you've read nothing that offers proof, but you hate Obama and will accept anything that smears him. And Beck...? Amazing that you missed all the online fact checking that shows what a lying, ratings-seeking clown he is. The facts are indeed there. They just don't agree with you.

Of course, if you have facts...present them.

And poof--there goes another Anonymous back to the hills, when facts are requested.

Does anyone understand what fraud Prof means? Is he perhaps calling Beck a professor of frauds? If so, I'd buy this guy a drink, but I'm afraid he's ready right now for his designated driver.

Anyone who questions the policies of President Obama is a racist. We must scream and shout this to everyone and get them to boycott the conservative/libertarian voices. Otherwise people might wake up and realize how racist and dangerous our policies really are. Yell louder people, deflect attention from what is really happening to America.

You are quite naive if you think these advertisers will forfeit the millions of impressions that they make on premium demographic targets by advertising on Beck's show.

These are profit driven companies. They dont give a rat's ass what Beck says as long as he gets eyes on their message.

You leftist buffooons don't understand business at all, and most of you are not targetted by these advertisers because you don't buy from them anyways.

This boycott effort will fall flat.

As unfortunate as it is, each and every group in America has the freedom to speak. Whether you or I disagree with them is irrelevant and no one should be forced to 'shut up' because they have different opinions and views. If so, that would just prove Beck's prediction that this country's moving onward to a 'totalitarian state' by shutting down the avenues of debate and difference of opinion. What I've seen from the liberal/democratic party's camp is more hateful than anything I've seen come from Beck's shows. And what I’ve seen come from the conservative/republican party’s camp is just as frightening in some respects. But I've seen more liberals damage property, yell racial slurs during their 'protests' and make death threats toward anyone that has a dissenting view; if you’re a republican conservative, liberals will never respect you and automatically label you as a ‘racist’ or ‘hate-monger’. How is that fair? Doesn't anyone remember that this country that you live in was FOUNDED by the voice of dissent? If they hadn’t, would liberals and conservatives even have the right to voice their opinions? Truth of the matter is that most of those railing against Beck's comments are more than likely racists themselves and phobic of the differences in opinion. They don’t truly know the difference between white supremacy and colored supremacy. Racism is racism, period; but I hear more racism coming from the left than I do from Beck, even in my own personal life experience. I’ve been the target of racial hatred too, and I’m white. Is my claim less valid than Rodney King’s or the Harvard professor? No matter what, racism exists BOTH ways and I believe everyone has this disease, though they vehemently will deny it. Until we can cure the human condition - which would take an act of God - remove the hatred inside all of us, and until we realize that we’re all brothers and sisters on this earth - and ACT like it! -, we will never see the equality that we’re meant to have in this world, let alone this country. I love and appreciate ALL races. But there are some people in ALL races that will inevitably bug me just as they will bug you. Let Beck have his say, those who disagree with him will do so, just as those who agree with him will still agree with him, whether you succeed in removing him from television, there’ll be plenty of others in this country who will find their voices and dissent from the administration. To disagree with the administration is an American past time, don’t become hypocrites more than you already are. You liberals already have the mainstream media, Hollywood actors/actresses, the White House, and most of Congress in your pocket. Will you only be satisfied with total domination of public opinion and the complete trampling of our precious rights given to us by the Constitution? Please note, this is also applicable to the conservative, republican idiots in government too. Chill out already, it's getting old. We do NOT live in the earlier days of America where people were murdered outright for their association with others of different color. I doubt many yelling ‘racist’ truly know what it was like for them back then anyway.

At 4:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I love how you liberals want to shut people up that have a differing opinion, and you try to justify it by calling it "hate speech" you claim to be for civil rights but only when it benefits you. when someone has an opinion different than yours its you claim racism, because you know most people will back down after they are called a racist. when you say their facts are wrong you don't have any facts of your own. STOP your own hate and listen for once. stop all the partisan politics and form an original thought! ALL politicians are out for their own political gain, NONE of them have our interests at heart! how can you people be that closed minded?

If you want to make a protest to advertisers for removing advertising from Glenn Beck’s program -

DO NOT BUY S C Johnson PRODUCTS
http://scjohnson.com/products/
Telephone 1.800.494.4855

DO NOT BUY P&G PRODUCTS
http://www.pg.com/common/product_sitemap.shtml
513-983-1100

Here is another suggestion that is so simple but it makes a bold statement. Advertisers have the right to place their ads wherever they chose and the American public has the right to buy products of our own choosing. Doing this will help the economy and the financially strapped U. S. Postal System AND we may discover a great product that we never used before.

1. Buy one or more name brand COMPETITOR products
2. Write FOR GLENN BECK on the receipt
3. Put the receipt in an envelope and mail to:

SC Johnson
1525 Howe Street
Racine, Wisconsin 53403-5011

OR

Procter & Gamble
One Procter & Gamble Plaza
Cincinnati, OH 45202

DO THIS TODAY! DO IT FOR GLENN!

I am not writing about Glenn but I am writing about the problem. The truth is it is a people's problem in our Country and not just one man.

Oh, I know some don't believe in God but that is their right. But that is the problem. Our Nation and the people in it, including the Government structure have forgotten God and have done away with His Laws. Until we as a whole get back to trusting God and not Government, this will not stop. So Beck, Limbaugh, Savage and the other talk show hosts are no more the problem than the people in Government.Until we get back to God and follow His laws forget it, things will not change.

I've come to the conclusion that M Savage is correct. "Liberalism is a mental disorder" You complain that the conservative talk shows should be banned because they don't agree with your president. Do you remember what was said about our last president by the liberal press? Get over it!!!! I believe that all conservatives should treat this president with the same respect that you liberals treated our last president with.

Liberals understand what tyranny really is, which is why they support it in all forms with this administration. They attack all those who they want to discredit as 'tyrannical', yet refuse to see the same tyranny in their own 'savior' Obama. They WANT tyranny, because only then will they have control over those that oppose them, but I doubt the majority of Americans are stupid enough to let it happen. Then again, if those who really, truly value freedom in all its forms continue to sleep, then they deserve the rude awakening in the decades to come. I truly believe there are some liberals who will be surprised when they lose the freedoms they so blatantly take for granted.

You liberals don't even know what 'terrorist' means. What you're doing now is the same blanket statement that Bush used to describe 'terrorist.' If someone doesn't agree with you, you automatically label them a 'terrorist'? Completely idiotic. By the way, boycotting advertisers won't shut down the people who disagree with you, you'll only convince them to continue to speak out against your hate and idiocy. You don’t even bring valid disputes to the table by wanting to shut conservatives up. Honestly, it’s the liberal faction in this country that’s more terrorist minded.

I am going to boycott them and I would bet there are millions who will too. I have lost my respect for Donny. By they way you folks who believe in this administration are duped, the only change you will see in the change that is left in your pockets, what a bunch of people who can't see the truth in front of you. Public Enemy once sang that "Our freedom of speech is freedom or death...we got to fight the powers that be."

The first amendment of the Constitution guarantees that each and every citizen be given the right to freely express themselves and their thoughts in any forum without censorship or limitation, usually without punishment or repercussion.

What our founding fathers (and perhaps Public Enemy--I don't feel I can speak for either) never saw coming was the ability to incite others with inflammatory speech. They couldn't possibly imagine people like Glenn Beck, Keith Olbermann and others having a national forum with which to eschew intelligent civil discourse in favor of loud, brash, opinions that stir up a hornet's nest.

In our nation, we have checks and balances. Not only are there some set in place by law (as the different branches of government, for example) to ensure that no one person or faction runs amok, but there are also the intangible ones that right the nation when it veers off course.

Hello big business!

Advertisers who took umbrage to Beck's latest comments, which referred to Obama as a racist, have begun to pull their commercials from his show. CVS Caremark, for example, advertises on Fox but has decided to pull any ads from Beck's show. According to spokesperson Carolyn Castel, “We support vigorous debate, especially around policy issues that affect millions of Americans, but we expect it to be informed, inclusive and respectful."

Good luck on that because TV "journalism" has, for the most part, become a cesspool with little information provided to the masses and, instead, is filled with nonsensical opinions by largely uninformed "newspeople".

Relatively unchecked by society, the rantings of TV hosts may now start to come under fire by corporations who don't want themselves linked with incendiary comments. While the First Amendment guarantees people can say whatever they like and are protected by law (and rightfully so), the real power is in the money. Democracy and freedom are inextricably linked with capitalism. While repercussions aren't always of a legal nature for spouting your opinions, they do often take the form of a financial retribution.

Beck and other TV hosts have every right to comment and share their thoughts with the public. But they are starting to realize that when they exercise their freedom, everyone else (like advertisers) has the right to do the same.

Dear Sir:

I personally do not enjoy or watch Glenn Beck. I consider myself a Libertarian with conservative values or a Constitutionalist. I believe both the Democratic and Republican Parties are corrupt. The use of "race" or skin color continues to be a subject raised over and over in the mainstream media and in the political arena.

Currently, I believe the new trend is reverse racism. It is now okay to belittle or insult white people. Take the preacher's closing prayer at Obama's inaguration. Or how about Sotomayor's remarks and actions regarding the paramedics test and the wise latino woman... Or the situation with the Harvard Professor playing the race card...It is strange that CNN and MSNBC and FOX did not play a video tape of him speaking in a church making an inappropate joke about watermelons, a discriminatory jab at South Carolina citizens, and using the word 'nigger' in a church.

All American citizens must understand that we are all one race...That is the human race. There are no longer hobbits, dwarves, or elves. We do have different skin tones..We have different heritages and ethnicities but we are all of the same race...

Which leads me to the 'race' of Obama? Is he Black or White? Technically, Obama is bi-racial. Surely there are Biracial Americans insulted by the fact that he chooses to identify himself as Black instead of Biracial. If you choose one 'race' are you not insulting the color of the parent you are not choosing to call yourself? Then let's move on to his actions and religion. At times Obama is Christian and he quotes the New Testament...But when it is convenient he bows to foreign Saudi Kings and proudly uses his middle name when referring to himself. He also quotes the Koran..(I am referring to his speech in Cairo, Egypt) But if you point out his middle name is Hussein and you call him by that name in America then you are considered a racist for doing so..

Please understand that George W Bush was not good for this country either. He started the Endless Wars and the Patriot Act. Which Obama has continued and resigned the Patriot Act. Under the Obama Adminstration our troops have not been brought home but increased in Afghanistan and unmanned drones (robotic flying crafts) are dropping bombs over Pakistan...

America wake up! Stop watching Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC. Do the research for yourself...Use the internet, read a book, search for the truth objectively..

If you want to boycott something, boycott the Federal Reserve or the Council on Foreign Relations or the United Nations. Boycott the groups which stand against America and wish to destroy the Sovereignty of our Nation...You can do this by educating yourself and write your State Representatives...

In the spirit of Liberty...I hope this Blogger allows these comments to stay posted...

Sincerely

Fortunate Son

Glenn Beck is right; Obama IS a racist.

Furthermore, the only difference between Colors of Change and the KKK is the race of the people they are for and against. We will only have true equality in this country when we cease to allow such a double standard...but with Obama in the White House, I'm not even sure that equality for all is the goal anymore. It seems more and more that white people are being sent to the back of the bus.

I don't know who I detest the most, the left wing Kool-Aid drinkers who try to stifle any opposition to Chairman Obama, or the pussy corporate heads who don't have the balls to stand up to them.

Voltaire said, "I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it". There was a time when people stood up for their beliefs.

I can't help but wonder what Glenn Beck has said that has hit such a nerve with the left...perhaps he is getting too close to the truth?
Why else would there be so much concern?

Yes, Glenn is a little on the weird side which is entertaining, but he often points out some disturbing things about what is happening in our government.

I don't know if Obama is racist or not, but he did spend over 20 years in the church of a racist, and hangs out with some pretty radical people.

For Obama to say that the police acted "stupidly" when he had no facts one way or the other at the time he made the comment is in itself stupid. But, as we all know the man can't seem to form a sentence without a teleprompter.

what would be truly helpful would be if you would post a list of companies that advertise on Fox News -- particularly on Glenn Beck. It would be even more helpful if someone maintained the list daily, showing which advertisers have pulled their ads. I don't want to have to actually watch Fox to find out who's advertising on it. This would be a great public service!
