Republican Wingnuts Attempt To Turn Iran Situation Into A Partisan Opportunity
>
We've been warning that right-wing fringe elements who were rooting for Ahmadinejad to win last week suddenly want to capitalize on the tense situation in Iran and turn it into a domestic political issue by screeching that Obama isn't being "tough" enough, whatever that's supposed to mean. Obama's position is picture-perfect. The worst thing that could happen to the reformers is to be seen as puppets of the United States. Obama made it clear that he sympathizes with voters there but that this is an internal Iranian matter. Slimy hacks and opportunists like Mike Pence, John McCain, Eric Cantor and Mitt Romney-- not to mention war criminals like Michael Ledeen-- would like nothing better than to encourage a bloodbath in Tehran. Joe Lieberman, who certainly is more the Likud Senator from Israel than someone who has anything substantive to do with Connecticut, is looking for an escalation that would embroil the U.S. in another war.
When the Soviet Union collapsed, drooling right-wing sociopath and anti-Communist fanatic Daniel Pipes, was out of business. Then he discovered Islamophobia. As a gesture of irony, George Bush appointed him to the Board of the U.S. Institute of Peace-- you know, like calling a pro-pollution law, the Clean Skies Act-- and when the Senate turned him down, Bush waited for them to go on vacation and gave one of the country's most obsessed warmongers a recess appointment. He was one of the lunatic right-wing jerks calling for a victory for Ahmadinejad last week but now says he prefers the turmoil of an uncertain outcome.
The crocodile tears of all these vicious right wing sociopaths is sickening and their blood lust is infuriating. I loved the time I spent in Iran and the people I met there-- in Tabriz, Tehran and Meshed-- and I admire the Iranians for standing up for democracy the way we didn't do here in America in 2000. So far the civil war there is mostly online and through Twitter. I pray for the opposite of what psychopaths like Ledeen, Pipes, Lieberman and Cantor want. They want blood and have no regard for what happens to Iranians or democracy; I want to see this work out with as few deaths as possible in a way that leads to a triumph of democracy. Analysts are still claiming the election results are "ambiguous"-- even if we all feel in our guts that Ahmadinejad's election wasn't any more legitimate than Bush's. I'll be eager to hear what the GOP ghouls have to say about the upcoming Afghan election.
Nico Pitney has been live-blogging the Iranian uprising at Huffington Post. His work is fantastic and essential for anyone who wants to know what's going on beyond the mealy-mouthed nonsense you get from Eric Cantor, Mitt Romney and CNN. I got this must see video compilation from him:

Right on the mark, Howie. Is it just me, or are all the Conservative hacks being even more grindingly irritating than they have been in the recent past? Why can't we have an intelligent opposition, for once? If it's not the Dems being spineless, it's the Rethugs being as stupid, venal, and trash-mouthed as only they can.
