TODAYS' WRAP-UP: IMPEACHMENT'S ON THE TABLE; BUSH & ABRAMOFF WERE CLOSER THAN ANYONE KNEW; McCAIN WORSHIPS AT THE ALTER OF THE BUSH ECONOMIC MIRACLE

>

It's gonna be a tough political year for the Repugs

I went over to Brave New Films to listen to David Sirota, author of my favorite new book, The Uprising, speak about self-organizing. Before he started a lovely young woman breathlessly entered the courtyard and informed everyone that Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) had just taken to the House floor to present 35 articles of impeachment against George Bush. After Speaker Pelosi, who famously took impeachment off the table after the Democrats won control of both houses of Congress-- dooming the country to more... well, more impeachable offenses, gaveled the House to order, Kucinich began:
"Resolved, that President George W. Bush be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors, and that the following articles of impeachment be exhibited to the United States Senate... In his conduct while President of the United States, George W. Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath to faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and to the best of his ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has committed the following abuses of power..."

Watch a few minutes:

Only 35 articles? Some of them will be corroborated by Scott McClellan on June 20 when he-- voluntarily-- testifies before the House Judiciary Committee about how the Bush Regime set up a propaganda machine to trick the country into illegally attacking Iraq. I suspect, though, that new revelations about Bush's complicity with Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff won't come into play. Henry Waxman's report is actually shocking-- even for those of us who've had Bush pegged for years. Waxman and Tom Davis (R-VA) point out that the Regime went to great lengths to hinder and obstruct the investigation every step of the way. They then go on to enumerate a stunning list of instances where the White House became a virtual extension of Abramoff's lobbying business. It should be appended to Kucinich's impeachment resolution.

So as McCain stumbles from blunder to blunder and makes it clearer by the day that he is advancing down the inexorable road to senility, his campaign-- basically a front for warmongers and lobbyists-- sinks deeper and deeper into a black hole. He is transforming himself into a sad sparring partner-- or, to be more accurate, punching bag-- for Barack Obama who, daily, points out that the failed policies of George Bush which have brought the country to the brink of ruin, are the only policies McCain has ever favored and the only policies he knows. Watch Senator Obama discuss McCain's demonstration that he hasn't learned a thing about the economy since he first admitted he knows nothing about the subject:

Dennis Kucinich for the First Cabinet Level Secretary of Peace
(to offset the old Secretary of Offense-Rumsfeld)
Cabinet Level position.

He's got stones bigger than Bill Moyer or Howie!

What worries me about McCain being such a lame opponent is that it plays into the notion that Obama has never won a tough race (though I would say that defeating Hillary Clinton is about as tough a race as anyone's likely to have). I foresee a media meme of "He isn't a legitimate president because McCain didn't put up much of a fight." Of course that's utter horsepuckey; it's like saying the Padres didn't really sweep the Mets over the weekend because the Mets' hearts were at home watching the Kansas City Royals. But when did sense have anything to do with it?

Senator Obama is the most articulate and inspirational politician since John F. Kennedy. I can't help but feel a bit sorry for McCain. Bring on the presidential debates!
