NO NEWS

>

-by Mags

There will be no news today. Once again someone somewhere, someone who I do not know and someone who I will never meet has done something stupid and destructive.

Today it is a student in Cleveland, but it doesn't matter much. Another day it was a deputy sheriff and another day it was a wealthy man who had gone missing in his private plane. Still other days it was a well known celebrity who decided to go commando. Big deal!

I am not sure about you, but Barack Obama's naked lapel means very little to me, as does Hillary's laughing style. That she laughed at Chris Wallace's ignorant questions was good enough for me. Fred Thompson is still boring whether he is in the race or out of it, and face it, Ron Paul is not going to be president no matter how much internet attention he gets.

There was no news the days that the news commentators and pundits could not get enough of those stories.

Today, if I chose to watch what passes for news, I would spend hours, literally HOURS, listening to the same handful of details ad infinitum. I would see picture after picture and be subjected to those heart wrenching interviews of innocent bystanders. "Sir, you just got the bejesus scared out of you, how does that feel?"

Today there will be no news as worth as the news in Cleveland that does not affect me at all. It never will affect my life and even though I feel for those victims and I wish we lived in a world where such things did not happen, I really do not think that the air waves and all channels need to be dominated by this for the entire day.

Today, we will give scant attention to mounting bellicose dialogue concerning Iran. We will not speak at length about how this administration is endangering the citizens of this country by using a video for distraction on another bad GOP news day. We will not really get the the bottom of the health care needs of thousands and millions of us. And, beyond a few slogans, we will get nothing in the way of problem solving for the failing economy.

And, tomorrow we may have no news either. There may be a wild fire or a white blonde woman might disappear. Or, there may be yet another court case that all of us must just must take in detail by detail. Do you think that Howard K. Stern and Larry Birkhead are gay?

There is no news. Not yesterday, not today, and not tomorrow.

Hey wait! Are you saying that there might have been actual "news" concerning these things you mention if only the corporate cable guys didn't grab a daily local news story and send it national? I find that hard to believe because I've watched these people and believe me they're not gonna tell you anything anyway. It's not their job. Their jobs are to muddy the waters of every issue. Make every national problem just a case of "he said, she said" journamalism. It's part of the game. The "local news makes it big time" is only one aspect of their jobs.

Probably the official title of the cable news should now be Tabloid news. All Britney, all the time.
