HARRIET MIERS AND JOSH BOLTEN CITED FOR CONTEMPT OF CONGRESS

>

This morning the House Judiciary Committee didn't move forward with impeaching Cheney (H Res. 333). Instead they cited Miers and Bolten for contempt of Congress. It passed 22-17 in a party-line vote. The full House will take up the matter after the August recess.

According to committee chair John Conyers, "If we countenance a process where our subpoenas can be readily ignored, where a witness under a duly authorized subpoena doesn't even have to bother to show up... then we have already lost. We won't be able to get anybody in front of this committee or any other." Not a single Republican on the committee sees this as a problem. In fact, they all liked it better in the pre-accountability days where all you needed was a golf club, an expense account, and a rubber stamp and life was good.

The Regime "has made clear it intends to block prosecution of any contempt charges, arguing that a presidentially-appointed U.S. attorney cannot legally be forced by Congress to flout the president's determination that the materials and testimony sought are protected by executive privilege."

Aside from not pursuing impeachment, no one on the committee has bought up shipping Bush and Cheney to the Hague for the war crimes tribunal they have earned.

My Representative in Congress is Howard Berman (CA-28, next door to Howie's district), a member of the House Judiciary Committee. I've written a couple of emails to him, or at least to his email form on the web, urging -- begging -- him to act on impeachment of Gonzo, Dick, and Bush.

Today I received a computer-generated form letter reply -- to somebody else's letter. It was about Berman's heroic efforts to end the war in Iraq by voting for a withdrawal bill that, as he must have known, had no chance of passing.

I just wrote to him again, and called for good measure. What do we have to do to get our unresponsive "representatives" to listen to the will of the people, instead of just making symbolic gestures (including today's toothless contempt citations)?

Woid, I have to admit that DWT hasn't ever been kind to your bribe-besotted warmongering congressman. Still, even I am surprised that he would have the unmitigated gall for bringing up Iraq when he was one of the architects of giving Bush bipartisan cover for the illegal invasion and occupation of that country. On matters regarding the Middle East, Howard Berman does not represent Democrats, the U.S., the Valley or even mainstream Israelis. He represents the extremist Likkud Party of Israel, no less than Lieberman does. His voting record on Iraq has gotten better lately but it started out looking exactly like Tom DeLay's and Roy Blunt's-- he was a 100% Cheney-Democrat.
