RELIGIONIST NUTS WON'T SUPPORT ANY OF THE BIG 3 REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES FOR PRESIDENT

>

Evangelical leaders see the Mormon faith as a scary non-Christian cult. I don't know much about it other than what I've read on Wikipedia and seen on South Park. I'm not sure how the Mormons feel about Wikipedia but they seem to have embraced the South Park version of their unlikely story. Since evangelical leaders are generally not huge fans of Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman, they probably aren't going to change their mind about Mormonism being a dangerous, heretical, satanic cult and probably won't change their mind that Romney, because of his faith-- and because he's a classic flip-flopper on all their issues to the point where it affects how his character is perceived-- isn't fit to be president. (On the other hand, if only polygamists were permitted to vote, Romney would win hands down.) The kind of normal people who wouldn't be concerned about Romney's faith, aren't the folks who generally determine GOP primary winners, particularly not in the backward parts of the country, like first primary state, South Carolina.

Republican religionist warlords don't exactly have high opinions of McCain or Giulinai either. A couple weeks ago, Focus on the Family chieftain, James Dobson said he wouldn't vote for McCain under any circumstances. His followers are generally incapable of independent thought. Yesterday Richard Land, a GOP operative in control of the Southern Baptist Convention wrote Giuliani off just as strongly: "He can't win-- not unless he changes his positions and convinces people that he's sincere. He's leading in the polls because he has great name ID. But most evangelicals I know won't vote for him even if he runs against Hillary Clinton. They just won't vote. The pro-life issue is a deal killer for us. The gay issue compounds the problem." (And Land, who is very much aware that Giuliani is an unrepentant fornicator and adulterer probably isn't even aware that he's also is a cross-dresser-- and that there are hundreds of photos of Giuliani dressed as a woman being held back until after he wins the nomination, just to bring the issue into focus.) I just heard Tony Perkins, another far right GOP generalisimo in charge of one of their religionist operations, denounce both Giuliani and Romney as "unacceptable" on CNN.

Yesterday's Baltimore Sun made the point that if "evangelical Christians and social conservatives, who have dominated" the Republican Party for "the past three decades, still have veto power over the nomination" Giuliani "might not have a prayer." Well, although it is clear that the far right hates McCain, Giuliani and Romney, who do they like? Gingrich, a partisan lightning rod with so many adulteries and divorces that no one can keep track? One of the Republican unknowns like Huckabee, Brownback, or Hunter? Republican propagandist Michael Savage?

Then you have to ask yourself if the Republican nomination is worth much anyway since polls show that most voters have had it with the GOP, at least for now. A brand new Gallup poll that was released today shows that-- even while Giuliano and Romney join McCain advocating an escalation of war in Iraq-- most Americans want the war over... now. In fact, the Republican would be nominees are out of step with just about every issue important to American voters. Now, if only the would be Democratic nominees would get behind the positions advocated by grassroots Democrats and forget the Inside the Beltway DLC-oriented consultants who have been wrong about everything and continue to lead clueless Democratic pols, especially Clinton and Biden, into a dead-end based on fear and caution...

UPDATE: FLIPPITY FLOPPITY ROMNEY

And don't think it's just DWT and our pals at the very outermost fringes of the religionist right who have noticed with dismay that Romney flips and flops even worst than most pols. Reactionary Kansas Senator Sam Brownback, a favorite of the most extreme of the social conservatives, sent out a press release today pointing out that "Mitt Romney's flip flops are enough to make John Kerry Blush." And in GOP circles, thems fightin' words. Romney, who never opens his mouth without reminding Republicans that Ronald Reagan, their patron saint, used to support women's right to choice (before he got Alzheimer's and gradually lost his mind). Romney also made the same claim (deceitfully) about Brownback, which is what caused Team Brownback to go into a tizzy and send out the press release. "This false allegation by the Romney campaign comes in light of recent evidence that Romney has switched positions on abortion at least three times... It is absurd of Mitt Romney to compare himself to Sen. Brownback on the right to live issue."
