WILL THE TSUNAMI OF REVULSION BUILDING AGAINST REPUBLICANS SWEEP AWAY LIEBERMAN WITH THE REST OF THE GARBAGE?

>

Recent polling looks dire for Ned Lamont's campaign. So what's behind the smiles on the faces of all the folks working to elect him? Do they know something the pollsters haven't detected? Connecticut's most perceptive political observer, Colin McEnroe, thinks so.

Rove has sent out the word to Republicans: "Lieberman is our man." Makes sense. Lieberman has been a mainstay of support for Bush, far beyond his Iraq policies. Many argue he has been far more valuable to the Bush Regime as a nominal Democrat than he would be as an admitted Republican, since he has been able to cloak his support for some of Bush's most hideous policies and nominations under the guise of some kind of bizarro world "bipartisanship."

McEnroe points out, however, that many Republicans are none too thrilled with Bush or his war or with the Republican rubber stamp Congress and their scandals. The Foley scandal cover-up will suppress the Republican vote-- and that really is Lieberman's only support right now.

With each passing day Lieberman depends more and more on the least motivated voters. Least motivated to turn out, I mean. A Republican or conservative-unaffiliated who doesn't like the war, who doesn't like Bush and who is now appalled by the Foley scandal, has less incentive to go to the polls. That voter thinks: Jodi Rell doesn't need me, and I don't like anybody else.
Add to that Lieberman's position on the ballot which is basically a crossword puzzle coordinate. Five down, three across. He is the Waldo of the Connecticut voting booth.
I think the Foley scandal will keep evangelicals home on Election Day, but they're not such a big factor in this state. Voters who are motivated to save any of the  three incumbent Republican congresspersons may or may not hunt around for Joe while they're in the booth.
If Lamont can make it a little closer by November than it is right now, he will have a better chance than most people give him in the long, strange trip of this campaign.

Jane over at Firedoglake has been keeping track of how Lieberman has consistently backed the Republican's absolutely worse policies and talking points, from Bush's Torture Bill right down to the bottom of the toilet when he reflexively defended the Republican child predator cover-up! If people in Connecticut want a change-- and they say they do-- there is only one way to achieve that: Ned Lamont.
