Now That Rep. Matt Shea Been Expelled From The Washington State GOP Caucus For Domestic Terrorism, Perhaps Trump Can Appoint Him To A Judgeship

>

No one in the Spokane area was surprised to read last week that one of their state legislators is a dangerous fascist freak who wants to overthrown the government. DWT has been covering Matt Shea for years, though mostly noting that if you were to sctach the surface of most Republicans these days, Matt Shea is what you would find. He's certainly not very different from congressional sociopaths like Matt Gaetz, Gym Jordan, Devin Nunes, Liz Cheney, Clay Higgins, John Ratcliffe, Debbie Lesko, Steve Scalise, Steve King...

Officially exposed by the state legislature as a domestic terrorist and expelled from the Republican caucus, Shea took to the pages of Facebook and started whining like a stuck pig (Trump): "Like we are seeing with our President this is a sham investigation meant to silence those of us who stand up against attempts to disarm and destroy our great country. I will not back down, I will not give in, I will not resign. Stand strong fellow Patriots."

Chad Sokol has been following this madman's career for years and warning his benighted constituents about him on the Spokesman-Review. Apparently his crackpot constituents-- east of Spokane to the Idaho border-- are as crazy and un-American as he is. It's a completely rural district (91.8% white) with no cities or towns-- but lots of compounds where crazy people on meth and pain killers. Even after Shea was exposed as a neo-fascist terrorist, he won reelection with 57.7% of the vote. This is Trump-Country! Yeah... and this is the whole 108 page independent report issued to all members of the state legislature. After it was released, Sokol wrote that "Leaders of both parties called for Shea’s resignation and said the findings had been forwarded to the FBI and the U.S. attorney’s office. 'He absolutely should resign,' said Republican Minority Leader J.T. Wilcox, of Yelm. 'His role as a House Republican is over.'"

Matt Shea isn't all that different from any garden variety Republican under 60 years old

The House hired the Rampart Group, a Seattle firm headed by a former FBI agent, to conduct the investigation in July. The probe involved interviews with more than two dozen witnesses and drew on troves of documentary evidence, including private texts and emails that have been leaked by Jay Pounder, a former Shea confidant and bodyguard.

The report largely corroborates previous news stories about Shea’s involvement in the far-right “patriot” movement, his preoccupation with military-style prepping and reconnaissance, his belief in an imminent civil war and government collapse, his conspiracy theories about Muslims and liberals and his dream of achieving a Christian theocracy.

But the report also reveals new details about Shea’s involvement in standoffs with federal agents in Nevada, Oregon and Idaho, and it offers an official determination that Shea has sought to intimidate political opponents and condoned acts of violence by his supporters.

In the days leading up to the 2016 occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, the investigation found, Shea was among a group of state officials who participated in several “preplanning” phone calls with Nevada rancher Ammon Bundy. Shea was operating as chairman of the Coalition of Western States, or COWS, a group that included lawmakers from several other states, including Idaho state Rep. Heather Scott.

The report also describes how Shea “authored and circulated an operations plan” for militia members to use during the standoff and how he sent one of his most trusted associates, Anthony Bosworth, to participate.

The Malheur standoff ostensibly began as a protest of the criminal sentencings of two ranchers who had been convicted of intentionally setting fires on public land. The 41-day standoff ended only after dozens of protesters were arrested and one, LaVoy Finicum, was shot and killed.

“The action was portrayed as a spontaneous act, but this investigation has obtained information that the armed takeover was meticulously planned in December 2015 by conspirators that included Representative Shea,” the report states.

That’s contrary to Shea’s previous characterizations of his involvement in the standoff. He told the Legislative Ethics Board in 2016 that his visit to the refuge was merely a “fact-finding” mission aimed at ensuring a “peaceful” resolution.

The report also details Shea’s involvement in the 2014 occupation of federal land near Bunkerville, Nevada, which began after Ammon Bundy’s father, Cliven, refused to pay cattle grazing fees. And it reveals that Shea took part in a third armed confrontation in Priest River, Idaho, in August 2015, which has not been widely reported.

According to the report, Shea called on supporters to gather in Priest River to block federal officials from seizing firearms from an elderly veteran. A health care professional had determined the man should not possess guns after he suffered a stroke, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs planned to seize them “pursuant to VA regulations for individuals receiving VA benefits,” the report states.

About 100 people, including Shea, stood outside the man’s home and prevented a VA employee from entering, according to the report. Many were armed, though no one was hurt.

Speaking later at a rally in Priest River, Shea described the VA’s actions as “bureaucratic terrorism.” According to the report, he told his supporters, “We are telling the federal government they are going to have to come through us to get to this veteran.”

The final section of the report provides a damning “risk assessment” of Shea. It notes that he “has suffered no negative repercussions to his actions” and draws political power from his activities in the patriot movement.

“With angry armed insurgents called into action against elements of law enforcement, every situation instigated or planned by Representative Shea carried with it significant risk of bloodshed and loss of life,” the report states. “ … Representative Shea presents a present and growing threat of risk to others through political violence.”

Before the report was made public Thursday, Shea’s attorney, Mark Lamb, issued a statement calling the investigation an unprecedented look into “lawful communications between a member of the House and citizens of this country.” The statement also asserted Shea had been “denied any opportunity to review and respond to its results,” though the report says he declined to meet with investigators.

Lamb, who has indicated he plans to file a lawsuit over the investigation, did not respond to messages seeking further comment Thursday evening.

The report prompted House Republican leaders to expel Shea from their caucus and strip him of his committee assignments, including his ranking position on the Environment and Energy Committee. His name and picture disappeared Thursday from the House GOP website.

The six-term lawmaker will have to find a new office, won’t receive assistance from caucus staff and won’t be allowed into caucus meetings to discuss legislation and strategy when the next session begins, said Wilcox, the minority leader.

Rep. Marcus Riccelli, D-Spokane, said he was “very disturbed by the details of this report” and agreed with Wilcox that Shea should resign.

But if Shea does not resign voluntarily, it would be premature to talk about expelling him from the Legislature, Wilcox said. That, he said, would sidestep the will of voters in the 4th Legislative District.

Attempts to reach other Spokane-area Republicans, including Shea’s fellow 4th District lawmakers, Sen. Mike Padden and Rep. Bob McCaslin, for comment Thursday were unsuccessful.

“The inquiry into Rep. Matt Shea’s conduct displays an obsession with conspiracy theories and violence that is incompatible with public office,” Lindsay Schubiner, program director at the progressive Western States Center in Portland, said in a statement. “The Washington House of Representatives must act immediately to hold him accountable. Shea’s egregious and threatening behavior warrants removal from office.”

Expelling Shea would require a two-thirds vote in the House. Although Democrats have a majority, the move would require at least some Republican votes. Only one lawmaker has been expelled from the Legislature in the history of the state. Nelson G. Robinson was ousted in 1933 for sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl.

If Shea resigns or is expelled, Republican precinct committee officers would nominate three possible replacements, and the Spokane County commissioners would choose one from that list to serve in the position until next November’s election.

House Speaker Designate Laurie Jinkins, of Tacoma, said Democrats would work with Republicans and “review and digest” the report before agreeing on the next step.

Both Wilcox and Jinkins, who previously served as chairwoman of the House Judiciary Committee when Shea was the ranking Republican on that panel, said the investigation had nothing to do with Shea’s political views.

“We respect Rep. Shea’s right to free speech and his personal beliefs, but those ideals are not what this is about,” Jinkins said in a statement. “This is about a state lawmaker who, according to the investigative findings, engaged in an act of domestic terrorism rather than choosing political or legal avenues to change laws and policies he disagrees with.”

Lori Feagan, a Spokane Valley nurse practitioner who plans to campaign against Shea as a Democrat in 2020, called the report “incredibly disturbing.”

“We must put our community’s safety and our future over party loyalty,” Feagan said in an email. “I’m grateful to Republican leadership for acknowledging that Matt Shea’s extremism is unacceptable and unwelcome. Now that his true character has been more fully revealed, I have confidence that our voters, both Republican and Democrat, will send the same message next year. Once we know better, we must do better.”

First Vote Towards Impeaching The Deranged Tyrant Passes

>

Damage Control by Nancy Ohanian

On Wednesday, after Jared Golden (D-ME) finally issued a last-minute-- albeit tepid-- statement backing the impeachment inquiry-- just as South Carolina Blue Dog Joe Cunningham had done Tuesday-- the only Democrats left opposing even the inquiry were GOP-lite reactionaries Jeff Van Drew (Blue Dog-NJ), Collin Peterson (Blue Dog-MN), Anthony Brindisi (Blue Dog-NY) and Kendra Horn (Blue Dog-OK). One irreverent senior member of Congress confided in me that Pelosi told Peterson they didn't need his vote to pass the resolution and that he was excused from voting for it. (His district has an R+12 PVI and Trump beat Hillary by over 60 points there. MN-07 is closer to the Dakotas in every way than to the Twin Cities.) "As long as he’s willing to be the 218th vote for her as Speaker, that’s all she wants from Collin. The rest are scum." Brindisi and Horn have tough districts as well; Van Drew doesn't. [Just before the vote, Horn announced that she would vote for the resolution, a big shock all the way around. Finally, Brindisi did the right thing as well.]
NJ-02 (Van Drew won with 52.9%)- R+1 (Trump beat Hillary 50.6-46.0%)
NY-22 (Brindisi won with 50.9%)- R+6 (Trump beat Hillary 54.8-39.3%)
OK-05 (Horn won with 50.7%)- R+10 (Trump beat Hillary 53.2-39.8%)
In the end, the only Democrats to vote with Trump were Jeff Van Drew and Collin Peterson. But not one Republican stood up for America today... not one. [Independent Justin Amash (MI), voted with the Democrats.] It passed 232-196.

Goal ThermometerMike Siegel held Trumpist hardliner Michael McCaul to a 51.1% win last year. McCaul doesn't seem to have gotten the message. "Today McCaul demonstrated how he is a shameless hypocrite without core values," Mike told us right after the vote. "For weeks he has written op-eds and made public statements, arguing that the impeachment inquiry was a 'star chamber' that 'defies democracy' and was 'illegitimate' because Democrats had not held a record vote on the process. Today, House Democrats gave him an opportunity to endorse the process he was asking for, and he flatly refused. This guy stands for nothing. His days in Congress are limited."

Kathy Ellis is running against an even more clueless Trump tuchas-licker, far right crackpot and closet case Jason Smith. Smith has never opposed Trump on anything and never will-- always chasing Trump against his own constituents without a second thought. "No one is above the law, and it's time to hold the President accountable for his suspicious and unethical actions," said Ellis this morning after the vote. "Rep. Smith has always been and will continue to be a rubber stamp for the President's agenda. It comes as no surprise that he voted no on moving forward with impeachment. I would have voted the opposite-- because I believe the people of the 8th District deserve to know the truth about what our President is doing."

Jason Butler, the progressive pastor running for a House seat held by Trump ally George Holding reminded us that "Yes, Trump is popular in North Carolina, but impeachment is not a popularity contest. This is about Holding’s role as a U.S. Congressman to uphold his constitutional responsibility to ensure that President Trump be held accountable for his actions to harm the United States. As the old adage goes, those who are guilty fear the truth. Holding is not only shielding the people from the truth-- but possibly protecting a President who has broken the law."

Dana Balter, the progressive taking on Trumpist John Katko in the Syracuse area sent out a statement to her supporters after the vote: "Over the past month, it has become increasingly clear to the American people that the President of the United States abused his power by withholding military aid to Ukraine in order to pressure a foreign government to interfere in our elections. John Katko made clear with his vote today that he’s not interested in knowing the truth about President Trump’s egregious abuses of power. Nor is he interested in upholding his own oath to protect and defend the Constitution despite the fact that the very foundation of our democracy is at stake. In a stunning betrayal of the people he’s supposed to represent, Congressman Kakto chooses, yet again, to put partisanship ahead of the national security."

Trump-- as well as his Republican enablers who have now clearly and undeniably been seen putting party (and the golden calf Trumpanzee) before country and before national security-- have been whining for exactly what was passed today and yet, not one of them voted for it. Hours before the roll call, AP predicated a near party line vote, reiterating that "there was no doubt that the Democratic-controlled body would approve the eight pages of procedures on Thursday, with each side likely to lose a handful of defectors, if any... Both parties’ leaders were rounding up votes as Thursday’s roll call approached, with each side eager to come as close to unanimity as possible. Republicans said a solid GOP 'no' vote would signal to the Senate that the Democratic push is a partisan crusade against a president they have never liked. McCarthy R-CA) said he’s unaware of any Republican even 'leaning toward voting for it.' Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), a moderate who some thought might be open to backing the Democratic rules, said he would oppose them. He complained about the secrecy that Democrats have used and said he had not been pressured by GOP leaders or Trump, with whom he had a drink at a Republican fundraiser Tuesday night. 'You really can’t roll back the clock' from the time the investigation began last month, Upton said.

State Rep. Jon Hoadley is running for the seat Upton has been in entirely too long. "The Rule of Law," he told us right after the vote this morning, "is the cornerstone of American democracy and should not be a partisan issue. President Trump used military aid to pressure Ukraine to interfere in our 2020 elections, and then tried to cover it up. Congressman Upton's vote against holding the President accountable today is just another example of his willingness to put his political party before the people of Southwest Michigan. Congressman Upton has changed. Who represents our district needs to change, too."

Omaha progressive Kara Eastman noted that-- no surprise-- Don Bacon voted against the resolution today. "As usual, Donald J Bacon put his party before country today when he voted against an inquiry to determine if the President committed unconstitutional acts. This shows that his commitment is to the President and not to his district. The one bright spot of his otherwise dangerous vote is that people are calling and emailing our campaign nonstop to volunteer and donate."
Democrats were also hoping to demonstrate solidarity from their most liberal elements to their most moderate members. They argued that GOP cohesion against the measure would show that Republicans are blindly defending Trump, whatever facts emerge.

“It will show the other party has become the party of Trump. It’s really not the Republican Party any longer,” said Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI).

Democrats’ chief vote counter, Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, said he believed “less than half a dozen” from his party would oppose the package. One Democrat whose vote was unclear, New York freshman Rep. Anthony Brindisi, said he’d not been pressured by party leaders to back the measure and said, “This is a decision I have to make.”

Republicans said they’d use the vote to target freshman Democrats and those from districts Trump carried in 2016. They said they would contrast their support for the rules with campaign promises to focus on issues voters want to address, not on impeaching Trump.

The House GOP’s campaign arm sent emails to reporters all but taunting some of those Democrats including freshman Rep. Chris Pappas (D-NH). “Pappas wants to be a one-termer,” one said.

GOP leaders called the rules “Speaker Pelosi’s sham process designed to discredit the Democratic process” in their daily impeachment email to lawmakers.

National polling indicates most Americans favor impeachment and the number seems to grow every day. For example, a poll of registered voters in Pennsylvania released this morning by Franklin and Marshall, shows that the crucial battleground state that Trump won in 2016, is unlikely to be in the Trump column next year. Just 37% of registered voters believe Trump has done a good enough job to deserve re-election, while 59% say it is time for a change. And 57% support the impeachment process-- 47% strongly. In contrast, only 37% strongly oppose the process. Swing district Republicans are in for a hard time, particularly Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01), Scott Perry (PA-10) and perhaps Mike Kelly (PA-16).

According to the latest Morning Consult state by state Trump Tracking, Trump's disapproval numbers continue to grow. These states (with their net approvals) should be particularly worrisome for GOP congressional incumbents:
Pennsylvania- minus 8
Virginia- minus 6
North Carolina- minus 3
Georgia- plus 1
Florida- minus 2
Ohio- minus 5
Michigan- minus 10
Wisconsin- minus 11
Minnesota- minus 11
Iowa- minus 14
Nebraska- minus 2
Montana- minus 3
Utah- minus 2
Arizona- minus 4
Nevada- minus 12

Washington congressional Republicans Jaime Herrera Beutler, Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Dan Newhouse all did themselves and their constituents a disservice today by clinging to Trump in the face of so much evidence mandating an impeachment inquiry. Just before the vote, Jim Brunner at the Seattle Times reminded readers that "In March of 1974, then-Washington Attorney General Slade Gorton broke with fellow Republicans with a public call for President Richard Nixon’s resignation amid revelations of abuse of power related to the Watergate scandal. More than four decades later, with Congress poised to take a key vote Thursday to formalize an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, Gorton is once again at odds with most in his party, who have dismissed the Ukraine investigation as a partisan witch hunt. 'I reached the conclusion that there are a dozen actions on this president’s part that warrant a vote of impeachment in the House,' Gorton, the former U.S. senator, said in an interview this week at his Clyde Hill home... Gorton says he won’t back Trump in 2020."

Replacing A New Dem Chieftain With A Democratic Socialist Who Works For PEOPLE, Not Wall Street-- Meet Rebecca Parson

>

Derek Kilmer is the head of the Wall Street-owned and operated New Dems, part of the Republican wing of the Democratic Party. But Kilmer's district-- WA-06, the northwest corner of the state Tacoma north through Bremerton to Port Angeles to Neah Bay and down to Copalis Beach and Aberdeen-- is nice and blue. Trump didn't even manage to score 40% there. The PVI is D+6 but ProgressivePunch has rated Kilmer an "F" for his lifetime crucial vote score (70.14%), the worst voting record of any Democrat from Washington.

Goal ThermometerThis cycle, Kilmer has a serious Democratic primary opponent, Rebecca Parson. Rebecca is a Tacoma Area Disabilities Commissioner, tenants’ rights organizer, small business owner, and member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Parson has served as a human rights observer in Mexico and as an AmeriCorps volunteer. She also worked for several years with the International Association of Genocide Scholar and as a substitute teacher. Her experiences have informed her strong commitment to human dignity, equal rights, and building a home for everyone-- not just the wealthiest few. She is the most recent Blue America-endorsed candidate and we hope you'll take a look at this video at the bottom of the page that she shot for us and at her guest post below and contribute to her campaign by clicking on the 2020 congressional thermometer on the right.

Time For A Moral Economy
-by Rebecca Parson

Tacoma was recently declared the "hottest" housing market in America.

The hottest market for who?

Not for the two people who have died since being evicted from the Tiki Apartments in Tacoma, so a developer could renovate and raise rents.

Not for the senior who spent three days and three nights sleeping in her wheelchair in a bus station because she had nowhere else to go.

Not for the people who died of fentanyl overdoses in the parking lot outside a shelter.

Not for the Kenyan immigrant who died in a field last winter, alone and freezing in the snow.

The market is "hot" for developers and the wealthy. It's deathly cold for the poor.

Yet the governmental response across my district, Washington's 6th Congressional District, is to criminalize poverty and homelessness, enacting "sit-stand-lie" bans, tent bans, and constant sweeps of homeless encampments. It's to give tax breaks to developers to build unaffordable housing. I's to form commissions to study the data, look for market-based solutions to the problem, and "bring all stakeholders to the table." (Interesting that they never seem to bring poor people to the table.)

Well, you know what? The market created the problem. The market will not solve it.

What we need is not more market-based, tiny, incremental "fixes" that take wealth from the public to line the pockets of developers and corporations.

What we need is a bold, comprehensive housing program that eradicates homelessness and guarantees housing as a human right. That's why in Congress I will fight for a Homes Guarantee that will:
Enact national, universal rent control

Build 12 million social housing units

Reinvest in existing public housing

Pay reparations for centuries of racist housing policies
Protect renters and bank tenants

End land/real estate speculation and de-commodify housing

Further the Green New Deal through the construction of green homes

Abolish private ownership of public housing

Perform deep energy retrofits of all public housing units by 2030

Create millions of new, living-wage, union jobs for green construction and retrofitting

Housing is for housing people, not creating profit. That's what all these policies are about. They're about telling people: you matter. You deserve a home.

They're about creating a home for all of us-- not just the wealthiest few. For that to happen, corporate rule of our housing market-- in my district and across the nation-- has to end. It's time for public money to be used for the public good.

It's time for a moral economy.

Scratch The Surface Of Half The Republican Legislators In The Country And You'll Find... Matt Shea (R-WA)

>

Rep. Matt Shea (R, of course)

Between Spokane and the Idaho border you'll find Washington's 4th legislative district. It's very rural. There's got to be a town there but I can't find one on the map, although... there was a post office of sorts in a town called Drygoon and in 1902 they changed the name from Drygoon to Colbert in honor of a postmaster named Harry Colbert. But I'm not certain if it's inside the district or not. Like I said, it's very rural. The state Rep from the 4th, Matthew Shea, is 45. He's beyond conservative. When his wife Lisa divorced him, she applied for an application of protection because he considered her a possession, not a possession like a lamp but a possession like the way it was in the Old Testament. Her court papers say he was very abusive, physically and emotionally and that he "insisted she walk on his left side because his sword, if he had one, would be on his right side." Refusing to get a job, he hosted a hate talk radio show on Patriot Radio twice a week. In 2008 he was elected to the state legislature, where he defines the far outer fringes of a Republican Party whose uneducated and drugged-up base is consumed by insane conspiracy theories.

Why should Matt Shea matter to anyone outside of eastern Washington? Well... last year, Rep. Shea admitted he had distributed a 4 page manifesto that strongly smacks of right-wing domestic terrorism, The Biblical Basis for War, and certainly makes it clear that he and his pals have been promoting violence against people who don't adhere to his extremist-- many would say psychotic-- ideology or religious beliefs. This past April, the House Republicans finally removed Shea as their Caucus Chair-- for advocating murdering non-Christians.

Shea was in the news again over the weekend. The Spokane Spokesman-Review. Chad Sokol reported that "Shea and some of his closest supporters have made physical preparations for a holy war, one that would help them establish their long-envisioned 51st state, their Redoubt, their Christian homeland," which he's named Liberty. "Leaked emails published this week reveal that Shea has had close ties with a group that conducted 'patriotic and biblical training on war for young men.'
In addition to running “background checks” on liberal activists and supporting military-style training for boys and young men, Shea has in recent years sought to purchase GPS tracking devices, compiled dossiers on local progressive leaders and kept a blacklist of suspected informants in his network. He also plotted to establish a “provisional government” in the event of a collapse and boasted about his efforts to “turn back the tide” of those who practice Islam in the United States.

Shea also distributed a list that purported to include the names and phone numbers of every law enforcement officer working in Washington state, saying it would help to “confirm or deny legitimacy” of investigators who made contact. He and his associates used email servers and messaging apps designed with extra layers of encryption in an attempt to shield their identities. He signed messages “V” or “V/B”-- short for his code name, Verum Bellator, which is Latin for “truth warrior.”

Shea, who rarely speaks to the news media, did not respond to messages seeking comment for this story.

“He was a paranoid dude,” recalled Jay Pounder, a whistleblower who once worked on Shea’s informal security detail. “He was always scared that the government was listening. He was always scared that if a black van pulled up, the doors would fly open and they’d scoop him away. And he always said that he would not go down without a fight.”

In a statement Saturday, the Spokane chapter of the NAACP responded to the revelations of the past week, saying Shea “uses his platform to promote hate and violence” and calling for his removal from office.

“Every moment he occupies a seat in our state Legislature emboldens extremists and erodes the legitimacy of our sacred institutions,” the NAACP said. “Anything short of the expulsion of Matt Shea from the Washington state House of Representatives is a threat to our community, a threat to our collective safety and an implicit endorsement of white supremacy.”

Pounder, who worked for Shea for several years, said that Shea outfitted him with various electronic tools designed to detect hidden recording devices and disrupt transmitters.

“He gave me a bug sniffer,” Pounder said. “He gave me a cellphone jammer that plugs into a cigarette lighter.”

Emails show that in July 2016, Pounder, using the code name Fox, presented Shea with a short list of Ebay links-- a selection of GPS devices that might come in handy for tracking perceived adversaries.

“He was thinking that, at some point in the future, there would be concerning people that need to be tracked,” Pounder recalled.

...Idaho state Rep. Heather Scott, R-Blanchard, emailed Shea in May 2017, including an attachment of more than 60 pages of scanned newsletters and other documents related to water use and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

“This packet is from a private meeting I went to and is full of valuable information on key federal operatives that are working collectively in the Northwest out of multiple locations,” Scott wrote. “Please take the time to review and learn some of the names and connections as I believe the information will be very valuable. This information is somewhat sensitive so please be careful who you choose to share it with.”

The packet included a biography of Elaine Willman, who has called for abolishing the sovereignty of Native American tribes and appeared with Shea at a “New Code of the West” conference in Whitefish, Montana, in October 2018.

Shea forwarded Scott’s message to Pounder, writing, “Ms. Willman is one of us. The rest need to be put on our list. We need to talk at your earliest convenience.”
Crazy or dangerous? Or both? Shea, an ally of Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), prophesizes he will be elected president (of the U.S.) and that his assassination will lead to a civil war. You tell me, does this crackpot manifesto of his look like a call to prepare for violence and civil war? I don't think you can put someone in prison for this stuff-- or even in a mental institution. It's up to his constituents to remove him from office, though. I have a feeling many of them are very much like him though.

This fucking nut case goes on and on and on and I'm getting drowsy inputting it all, so I'll just include a few more highlights. Libery won't declare war on the rest of Washington or the rest of the U.S. if they agree to 5 demands:

Stop all abortions
No same sex marriage
No idolatry or occultism
No communism
Must obey Biblical law

"If they do not yield-- kill all males.

There's this crazy section of the manifesto about how to divide up all the booty and loot they take from Jews and other non-believers and another part about how to biblically deal with tyranny, some of it overtly anti-democratic like, "God doesn’t use majorities. The majority is usually wrong." He also asserts that assassination is not murder and that you must "Prepare your horse for battle, but the battle is the Lord’s." And something about "Abad and Shamar," who I thought were whales at the San Diego Aquarium.

Matt Shea-- a member of the state legislature... and a Republican Party leader.

Right Wing Terrorist In The Washington State Legislature Explains How To Divide Up The Booty They Steal After They Kill The Jews And Gays And Liberals

>

2018 Republicans-- Matt Shea and Cathy McMorris Rodgers

Between Spokane and the Idaho border you'll find the 4th legislative district. It's very rural. There's got to be a town there but I can't find one, although there was a post office of sorts in a town called Drygoon and in 1902 they changed the name from Drygoon to Colbert in honor of a postmaster named Harry Colbert. In 2008 he was elected to the state legislature, where he defines the far outer fringes of a Republican Party, whose uneducated and drugged-up base is consumed by insane conspiracy theories.

Why should Matt Shea matter to anyone out side of eastern Washington? Two reasons. On Wednesday, Shea admitted he had distributed a manifesto that strongly smacks of right-wing domestic terrorism, The Biblical Basis for War, and certainly makes it clear that Shea has been promoting violence against people who don't adhere to his extremist-- many would say psychotic-- ideology.

The Spokane County Sheriff, Ozzie Knezovich, sent the manifesto, which was written by Shea, "straight to the FBI" and noted that it "is not a Sunday school project or an academic study. It is a 'how to' manual consistent with the ideology and operating philosophy of the Christian Identity/Aryan Nations movement and the Redoubt movement of the 1990s." Shea prophesizes he will be elected president (of the U.S.) and that his assassination will lead to a civil war. You tell me, does this crackpot manifesto of his look like a call to prepare for violence and civil war? You can't put someone in prison for this stuff-- or even in a mental institution. It's up to his constituents to remove him from office, though.

Last month, writing for Rolling Stone-- and before the deranged manifesto leaked-- Leah Sottile reported that Something’s Brewing in the Deep Red West. Shea is the chair of the state Republican caucus and he's batshitcrazy, frothing at the mouth for a race war or a religious war, or a war against the media, or a war of independence... just some kind of war. Sottile reported that "in his nine years in office he has allied with some of the most high-profile conspiracy theorists and anti-government extremists in the American West: from Cliven Bundy and his sons to a neo-Confederate Idaho preacher to the head of the Oath Keepers, an extremist group that believes “the United States is collaborating with a one-world tyrannical conspiracy called the New World Order.”
“I don’t think that the extent of [Shea’s] connections are widely known,” says Rep. Marcus Riccelli, a three-term Democrat in the state legislature who represents Spokane. “It’s a real statement of the Republican Party that someone with his extreme views has risen in the ranks of leadership.”

Long before President Trump deemed the press the “enemy of the people,” Matt Shea was refusing to speak with the media and airing his concern over conspiracy theories like FEMA camps with InfoWars’ Alex Jones. Shea also organized the Spokane chapter of the anti-Muslim ACT for America, which the Southern Poverty Law Center classifies as a hate group. And for the past few summers, Shea has spoken at a secretive religious community run by a man who was a foundational figure in the Christian Identity movement, which, according to the Anti-Defamation League, believes white Europeans to be the lost tribes of Israel and considers Jews to be the offspring of Eve and Satan.

...People have been talking about hacking off the eastern part of Washington-- from the Cascades to Idaho-- since at least 1915. But recently, creating a bastion of God-fearing, gun-toting, canned-food eating whiteness where conservatives can survive the End Times has been embraced by survivalists and dubbed the American Redoubt-- an idea that’s gained enough interested parties to demand an actual corner of the real estate market. Though Shea’s Liberty idea hasn’t gained much traction in the Statehouse, it’s red meat for anti-government extremists at a time when some Americans really are viewing this area of the country as the last remaining holdout for the type of America they think can be great again... “There’s a deep divide within the Spokane County Republican Party between its mainstream wing and its more constitutionalist wing,” Clayton says. “The constitutionalist wing is heavily influenced by Christian nationalists and some white-supremacist elements… they have a particular view of the Constitution and it’s all steeped in this idea of liberty. It’s anti-statism. It’s anti-government.”
Last August, Daniel Walters painted a picture of how the seemingly "mainstream conservative," Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a key Ryan lieutenant and Trump enabler, plays footsie with these racists, Nazis and terrorists.

This year, one of the crazed fascists, Jered Bonneau, ran against McMorris Rodgers in the primary. Shea hadn't endorsed her in 2014 or 2016 and Bonneau expected fellow lunatic Shea to endorse him this year. But McMorris Rodgers wanted Shea's endorsement against Bonneau and, for some reason no one seems to know, Shea gave it to her.
It shows how, even as McMorris Rodgers has distanced herself from the alt-right, she's been aligning herself more closely with a different part of the GOP fringe-- the patriot movement-- as she gets ready to face her first truly competitive election.

Even though McMorris Rodgers is nearly certain to survive the top-two primary, her performance-- and the performance of her Democratic competitor, former state Sen. Majority Leader Lisa Brown-- could have major impacts on fundraising and voter enthusiasm. If McMorris Rodgers crushes Brown in the primary, it could hobble the Democrat for the general election. But if Bonneau-- or fellow Trump-loving conservative Dave Saulibio-- gained traction it could split the vote.

...“I reached out to Matt Shea to talk about some of the others that were in the race," McMorris Rodgers told the Spokesman-Review. “And in the course of that conversation, he let me know that he was going to be supporting me.”
Read the rest of the eye-popping story. Or don't. But, if you can, vote for or, in any way you can, support Lisa Brown, who would be a great candidate for Congress even if there were no Matt Shea or Cathy McMorris Rodgers. On Tuesday, here's another race where Nate Silver's model should be proven woefully inadequate for accurate political forecasting.

What Happened In Washington State On Tuesday?

>

Well we still don't know all the details. Only around 70% of the votes were counted by Thursday morning in Washington's top-two jungle primaries. But in the statewide race-- Maria Cantwell's reelection-- about twice as many Democrats voted as Republicans. That filtered down to the three crucial congressional races as well. The big picture for the House is that there are 6 Democrats and 4 Republicans in the Washington House congressional delegation. None of the Democrat seats are in jeopardy. But 3 of the Republican seats are. There's a better than 50/50 chance that in January the Washington delegation will be 9 Democrats and one Republican (Dan Newhouse). These are the 4 Republican-held districts with their PVIs:
WA-03 (Jaime Herrera Beutler): R+4
WA-04 (Dan Newhouse): R+13
WA-05 (Cathy McMorris Rodgers): R+8
WA-08 (open- Dave Reichert): even
Trump won the third district with 49.9%, won the fourth district with 57.9%, won the 5th district with 52.2% and lost the 8th district 44.7%. Thursday morning, Dave Wasserman from the Cook Report tweeted that the 3 districts with big urban/rural divides as exactly where Republicans are apt to be in trouble in November and used as examples the seats occupied by Herrera Beutler (Portland suburbs), McMorris Rodgers (Spokane) and Reichert (Seattle suburbs). Wasserman and most others who follow House elections closely attribute that to "pathetic Republican turnout, which then allows anti-Trump energy in suburbs to put Democrats in contention." That was the real story in Washington on Tuesday.

In the 8th district, Republican voters coalesced around Dino Rossi and with 77.6% of the precincts counted, he was the top voter getter with 49,071. When you combine his vote with the 2 other GOP candidates, the Republican vote in the 8th district adds up to 53,,570. But when you add up all the Democratic votes you get 58,032, a big warning sign for Rossi as we head towards November. At this point, I'd bet on Kim Schrier being the next member of Congress, not Dino Rossi.

The big deal race where no one thought there would be a real battle is WA-05, the eastern third of the state. It's a huge district that includes Spokane and a lot of rural and small-town Washington and the seat is occupied by Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the highest ranking Republican in the House, a dull Trump rubber stamp. Her Trump affinity score is a stunning 97.8, one of the most disgraceful in Congress-- total Trump enabler.

Two-thirds of the WA-05 voters live in Spokane, which was represented by Lisa Brown while she was the Majority Leader of the Washington state House. When she retired from the legislature she was named chancellor of Washington State University (Spokane), where her most important achievement was building a medical school that trains doctor for rural medicine, a crucial development in the lives of the people outside Spokane. On Tuesday she stunned the district by coming within one point of McMorris Rodger-- and that was before the story of McMorris' crackpot fundraiser with Devin Nunes broke. With 78.6% of precincts counted last night (162 of 206), McMorris had 68,475 votes  (47.8%) to Brown's 67,040 (46.8%).

Back in April, the Spokesman-Review was already predicting a tight race, largely based on voters' mostly negative views of Trump.
The race between U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers and former WSU Spokane Chancellor Lisa Brown is shaping up to be a bruising race, said H. Stuart Elway of Elway Research Inc.

In a recent survey of 403 registered voters in the district, incumbent McMorris Rodgers had a 6-percentage-point lead over Brown, with 44 percent saying they plan to vote for the Republican incumbent and 38 percent saying they plan to vote for the Democratic challenger. Another 3 percent said they plan to vote for someone else, and 16 percent are undecided.

The overall poll has a margin of error of 5 percentage points, so the race is within the margin and McMorris Rodgers’ lead is “not statistically significant,” Elway said. Being under 50 percent is a worry for any incumbent.

...One of the biggest indicators of how survey respondents say they are likely to vote was their view of the job President Trump is doing. Half of the people polled said they disapprove of the job Trump is doing, while 45 percent said they approve.

When asked whether they “strongly” or “somewhat” approve or disapprove of the job he’s doing, men were about equally divided, with 26 percent saying they strongly approve and 30 percent saying they strongly disapprove.

Goal ThermometerYesterday WXLY reported that new numbers have been going better for Brown. "As of Wednesday evening, the Spokane County Elections Office announced that incumbent Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a Republican, had 44.25 percent of the vote while Lisa Brown, a Democrat had 50.93 percent of the vote... Typically, primary elections typically see 30 percent of voters cast their ballots at most, but yesterday some 45 percent decided to make their voices heard. “We've seen turnout just skyrocket,” shared Spokane County auditor Vicky Dalton. Please consider contributing to Brown's campaign by clicking on the 2018 Blue America congressional thermometer on the right.

Even before the new numbers had been released, the Spokesman-Review reported that Washington Republicans are in big trouble.
Up and down the long primary ballot, there were signs of unusual Democratic strength and few Republican bulwarks. They start, of course, with the 5th Congressional District, where Democratic challenger Lisa Brown is fewer than 600 votes behind incumbent Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers at the end of the first night’s count.

...In southwest Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, incumbent Republican Rep. Jamie Herrera Beutler is at 41 percent, about 5,000 votes ahead of Democrat Carolyn Long. But like Brown, Long has a lead in Clark County, the home of Vancouver, and unlike Brown, she split the Democratic vote with three other candidates.

In the 8th Congressional District-- a suburban, exurban and rural Republican stronghold of King and Pierce counties that was made even stronger in the most recent redistricting by reaching across the Cascades to add Chelan, Douglas and Kittitas counties-- Republican Dino Rossi finished on top of a crowded race for an open seat. Democrat Kim Schrier, a physician, has a lead of less than 1,400 votes for the second spot. But Democrats Jason Rittereiser, a deputy prosecutor, and Shannon Hader, a public health official, finished third and fourth, and the combined total of those three is greater than Rossi’s total at this point.

If Rossi can’t capture the seat in November, it would be the first time it wasn’t in Republican hands since it was created after the 1980 census.

...In Spokane County, Democrats fared better than they have for years in some races, particularly in the 6th Legislative District. Jessa Lewis, a single mom and former national delegate for Bernie Sanders, is nearly 500 votes ahead of Jeff Holy, former law enforcement officer and a three-term House member trying to move up to the state Senate. Kay Murano, an executive director of the Low Income Housing Consortium, is leading incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Volz, the chief deputy county treasurer, by almost 1,500 votes.
